Yes i did mine last month,so easy in and out within 15 minutes, total cost 1900 baht. Why do people like to throw away 10,000 baht? I always do my renewal at Pattaya 30 days before.

Yawn.  Been discussed on here many times.

It's just a quick calculation.  I can get around 5% in bank interest in my home country, even more if the money is in my managed fund.

800,000 baht x 5% = 40,000 baht per annum.

At the time of posting, Kasikorn is paying 1.15-1.20% interest on a 12 month term deposit.

800,000 baht x 1.2% = 9,600 baht.

You say your extension costs you 1,900 baht, but it's actually costs you way more, and you had to go to immigration.  Not to mention, your money is in a 3rd World Country and not even at call.

If one renews 2-3 months in advance of expiration, it's still the original date of expiry, correct?

Yes (but the following year of course).

In case of a medical emergency, I have my health insurance. If you use the 800,000 for that, you'll lose your visa.

I guess you could use 400,000 of it for immediate needs and get it replaced quickly, provided you are in the 7 month window! Silly isn't it, having to show you have money for immediate needs and living costs, but pretty much not allowed to touch it!

Indeed. Those 800,000 baht are like giving them to the bank, because in practice, you can't withdraw them for the rest of your life in Thailand, and if you do, it's only during certain time periods, and you must deposit them back immediately.

Even if you decide to leave Thailand, you'll have trouble getting that amount of money out of the country.

That's why some of us find the agent option more appealing. Besides, you can forget about all the paperwork and visits to the bank and immigration.

UPDATE      You can renew you retirement visa 45 days before it expires ...(well it worked for me anyway lol ) the only trouble was there wanted a Bank statement a full year from when you apply 45 days early and not  a year from the actual expiry date of the visa.... a pain I had to go back to my bank a second time for a statement which was 13 month not just a full year .. so be warned

Australian superannuation median growth return was 10.5% for the financial year 2024 / 25.

800,000 baht x 10.5% = 84,000 baht.

That's why the 800,000 baht is just a life long donation to a Thai bank.

Of course, many will say, "I only pay 1,900 baht for my extension."  :cheesy:

  https://www.superguide.com.au/super-booster/super-funds-returns-financial-year

"For the third year running, super funds surpassed expectations in the financial year to June 2025. Against a backdrop of Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs and rising geopolitical tensions, with high market volatility, the median Growth fund returned 10.5%."
