Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has donated state-of-the-art “fragmentation-resistant” boots to soldiers patrolling the Thai-Cambodian border and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, in a bid to reduce the risk of landmine injuries.

The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Defence, where Gen. Natthapol Nakpanich, Deputy Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Defence, in his role as Director of the Special Task Force for Thai-Cambodian Border Management (Sor Bor Tor Gor), formally received the donation.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit Sangkhapong, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and president of Class 10 of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, represented Mr Thaksin in making the presentation.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit explained that Mr Thaksin was deeply concerned for the welfare of soldiers and EOD personnel, who often face grave danger from landmines, resulting in severe injuries and limb loss. The specially designed boots, produced to exacting German military standards, incorporate advanced technology to protect vital lower limbs during hazardous missions.

The donation comprises 100 pairs of boots, worth 2.5 million baht, for border patrol soldiers and a further 20 pairs, valued at 500,000 baht, for EOD teams, a total contribution of 3 million baht. The boots will be custom-manufactured at a specialist facility and delivered within 30 days.

“This initiative is aimed at safeguarding the lives and well-being of our troops,” said Pol. Maj. Gen. Surasit. “By providing this advanced protective gear, Mr Thaksin hopes to reduce the risk of life-changing injuries and support the brave men and women serving on the front lines.”

And why is someone from the Prime Minister's Office representing him when he's not  the Prime Minister or even registered with any political party?

Yup, that's Thaksin in a nutshell.

A new way of obtaining military support and discouraging a military coup against his family's governments?

I'd much prefer a blast resistant jock strap as part of the package, to ensure all three legs are protected.

Since his daughter possibly could still be accused of defamation against the Thai military officer she suggested wasn't a "team player" in her chat with Loong, I'm sure her dad's donation may go some way towards assuaging those ruffled khaki feathers.

Yet another pile of pocket stuffing from the rich guy.

You may never hear mention of these boots ever again.

People on here just can't help themselves! My question to the twisted: what have use done for the Thai soldiers on the border? I guess Nothing!!!

Auto correct active?    Did you mean,  "what have you done", vs  "what have use done".

I agree with what I believe you meant.  Some people just have to hate ...  belittling the offer of blast resistant boots by comparing them to "chocolate fire guards" and " you lose your leg but can keep the foot....excellent" is a low blow, regardless of who it is that is offering to provide the boots!   I suspect those posters have little or no experience in a combat zone.   If they do, they should know and they should do better!

Anything that can and would protect a Thai soldier by reducing or preventing injury from land mines is better than boots that have little or no protection from the blast and fragmentation.   Most anti-personnel land mines that I am familiar with cause injury by the blast wave, vs, fragmentation (e.g. bouncing Betty mines).

If the boot can prevent or reduce injury from fragmentation then it should also prevent or reduce the mutilation  by "both blast and fragmentation damage" of foot and leg!!

This might be the boot that, according to the article, will be custom made for Thai Soldiers.   Probably custom made, my guess, because the of the smaller size feet of Thai men vs. western male feet size.

>Protection against anti-personnel landmines according to STANAG 2920

>Special metal free design for mine clearance operations

>High durability for harsh conditions

>Ballistics at sole and sides

>Comfortable to wear in daily operations for all genders

The BCB2 protection boot is the latest boot designed by Force Ware. It is especially developed for the use in humanitarian and military mine clearance operations with its metal free design. The BCB2 provides ballistic protection by degrading the effect of explosions due to mines. It offers an effective protection against mines containing up to 50 g (0.11 lbs) of explosives.

The BCB2 protection boot is water resistant, lightweight, and highly robust even in harsh conditions thanks to its rugged design and durable materials. It allows almost unrestricted mobility independent of the individual working position due to its flexible sole. It is comfortable to wear in all climates and for long daily operations.

Purely done for making the headlines and divert attention from the fact his naive daughter help escalate the whole saga by getting played by Hun Sen when he released their private phone conversation.

An obvious and intelligent thing to do, get the army on your team and you've won the battle.

So a 3 mil donation that will be declared for tax purposes, chump change for him.

How about doing something to help out the whole country.

Take your clan and depart to a country far away

What's that old saying?  ..... "Beware of those bearing gifts"

If the specification for this boot is correct, in so far that that "It offers an effective protection against mines containing up to 50 g (0.11 lbs) of explosive".... Then it is useless if someone steps on a PMN2 type mine that has been allegedly laid by the Cambodians.  The PMN2 is an early version of the Russian made PMN family of anti-personnel mines, and contains twice the amount of explosive e.g. 100 g.

I would regard this gift as providing a false cense of security for the poor young foot soldier.

Am I the only one to congratulate Thaksin on his gracious gift to the Thai Army?  It's a nice gestureI

He could have done it from his prison cell though...

What a ridiculous stupid idea that was,now how much do the Thai people have to pay for this childish behavior. That's not going to stop someone loosing a leg or there life when they stand on a land mine.WAKE UP

Probably boots obtained from the Polish Special Minefield Clearance Battalion. Comes complete with opaque sunglasses.

Not my army, not my country, not my fight.  Who knows who's to blame for this stupid posturing. My 18 yr old son was doing two weeks military training on that border, he just finished when it all kicked off. He told me that the training sergeant had told them what a glorious thing it was to die for ones country, real WW 1 stuff, my son at 18 was cynical enough to think, "I'll find a concrete wall to hide behind and let the heroes do the dying". Well done my boy! Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

As a conscript, I can't blame him, but any soldier who talks like that is a coward and deserves execution by firing squad

Counter question: What did you do for the Thai soldiers at the border, or are you just a troll?😁

yeah ..      care to demonstrate them ?

how about they use them with the  GT200 bomb dectectors The GT200, a device marketed as a bomb detector, was exposed as a scam. It consisted of little more than an empty box with an antenna, relying on the user's unconscious movements rather than any actual detection mechanism. Despite being sold to numerous countries, including Thailand, it was proven ineffective and potentially dangerous.

I still say ..  take the cambodian prisoners and have them walk up front to show a clear path ....

Maybe they heard that Hollywood was working on a teevee series "Real Tyrants of Planet Earth" and were hoping to get on in the second season.
