In an intriguing twist, Bangkok’s famed Michelin-starred Raan Jay Fai restaurant finds itself under the scrutiny of the Department of Internal Trade. The investigation, led by Deputy Director-General Udom Srisomsong, focuses on allegations that the eatery overcharged a social media influencer by 2,500 baht.

The incident in question arose when PEACHII, a popular YouTuber with 1.6 million followers, claimed she was charged 4,000 baht for Raan Jay Fai's renowned crab omelette, despite the menu listing the price at 1,500 baht. This significant discrepancy sparked a wave of online attention and prompted the department to look into potential violations of the Prices of Goods and Services Act.

Udom Srisomsong stated that any restaurant found guilty of overcharging customers could face fines of up to 10,000 baht. Moreover, an additional fine of the same amount could be imposed if the restaurant fails to display prices for special or more expensive dishes clearly.

To clarify the situation, officials intend to contact PEACHII to gather more details on her experience at the celebrated eatery, which draws locals and tourists alike with its culinary prestige. The department plans to engage with both the influencer and the restaurant operator to assess whether any legal breaches occurred.

Raan Jay Fai, helmed by the 82-year-old culinary maestro Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta, has consistently captured the attention of food enthusiasts around the globe. Nestled on Mahachai Road in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district, the restaurant is renowned for its vibrant street food and the skilful creations of Chef Jay Fai, whose nickname intriguingly refers to a skin mole, with 'Jay' meaning elder sister.

The eatery is no stranger to long queues and rave reviews, largely due to its unique blend of textures and flavours, expertly crafted beneath the flames of Jay Fai’s signature goggles. The crab omelette, in particular, remains a standout dish, often celebrated for its generous portions of succulent crabmeat enfolded in a golden, crispy exterior.

Given the gravity of the allegations, the inquiry also serves as a broader reminder for establishments to maintain transparency with their pricing. This incident raises pivotal questions about consumer rights and the accountability of businesses in adhering to ethical practices.

The outcome of this investigation will likely hold significant implications, not just for Raan Jay Fai but for the broader landscape of dining establishments across Thailand. As the narrative unfolds, patrons and restaurant owners alike are keenly awaiting any developments, which may redefine expectations and regulations within the vibrant culinary scene.

While the spotlight is firmly fixed on Raan Jay Fai, the situation underscores the vital balance between maintaining culinary excellence and ensuring that hospitality standards are met, leaving customers with not just a memorable meal but also a fair price.

I don't understand anything in Thailand....This shop has a Michelin star and thinks she can sell omelette for 1500 THB or maybe 4000 THB... WE don't know what is on the bill and what is eaten by this influencer.. even 1500 THB is overpriced for egg with crab, but okay, if you have a business you ask the price and if people want to pay it it is no problem, and if it is too expensive just leave it and eat somewhere else...I would never eat an egg with crab for 1500 THB or so as I think it is too much... The question here is why was the influencer charged for 4000THB..Therefor the bill must be shown and that is missing. But people are free to sell at a price and if the consumer finds it too expensive they can go to another shop.... Nobody is obliged to order in this shop. I suppose the overcharging has another reason...
