Oh God, lets hope not. That would be the worst possible outcome for Thailand. At least Thaksin has a brain, not so with the corrupt Anutin. I'm afraid the same happened in the UK when the Tories were last in power. I think the party ended up with about 5 different Prime Ministers in their last gasp try to hold on to power. It certainly cost them a huge loss when they finally had to hold a General Election. It also lost the Uk a lot of credibility.

I read that Anutin has made a deal with the People's Party so it's all over for Thaksin for a while.

Antin hates foreigners so for us expats we should pray he is not elected and whilst we're at that let's hope Taksin <deleted>inthewater doesn't have anymore relatives he can sell into his need to steal more billions from this country

For those of you who in this moment of a complex political crisis think that a "thumbs down" icon is in anyway a valid comment - be aware it is the equivalent of a digital grunt, an icon of mindlessness. the dumbest comment on the thread. THere is no "constitutional court" in th UK for a start.

It’s striking, isn’t it? This site is dominated by expat voices, yet in the middle of Thailand’s most serious political upheaval in years — a moment that could tip into outright military rule — the quality of discussion is shockingly low.
What we mostly see are throwaway remarks, recycled clichés, or knee-jerk reactions. Very few seem able (or willing) to engage with the country’s political history, the repeated interventions of the Constitutional Court, or the deep-rooted role of the military in undermining elected governments. It’s as if decades of coups, party dissolutions, and prime ministerial dismissals have left no impression at all on those commenting here.
Even more dispiriting is the sheer inability to put forward a coherent or informed argument. Instead of discussion, we get inane one-liners. Instead of analysis, there’s silence or snark. And then, of course, at the bottom of the pile are the “thumbs down” warriors — the digital grunters, incapable of anything beyond a knee-jerk click.

Prayut did nothing for the Thai people, nothing for education nor wages.  Thailand was stagnant under Prayut for a decade and only the military and elite prospered.

He finished most of Taksin projects. I don't know about Thais, but for us foreigners it was the best years in Thailand.

It looks like Anutin and the BJT will be in charge, subject to the PP's support. So I guess the Election Commission and the DSI will quickly end their investigation into the "blue" senators and the rigged Senate election due to a sudden lack of evidence.

Unfortunately, I would put my bet on that …….Anutin.

Doubt that he’s going to suddenly be foreigner friendly.

Crackdown on visa, bank accounts, retirees requirements, DTV incoming.

Ridiculous decision. Was by no means anyway supporting her, but leaders are allowed to speak freely in back channels.

The new leader will be whoever gets the okay from China.

If the People's Party does not get banned before.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra represents the Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand.

New Elections in January...maybe

takes a while for the military to rig it ....and even then they lose!

Well that's cleared the way for Anutin, as planned.

The only bonus if he does is he will not have anything to do with Thaksin or Paetongtarn.

Maybe the Shinawatra days are over as far as politics are concerned.

Even the new generation up north are tired of their broken promises.

According to the Wife earlier today she said Thai people are sick of all of them, and want them all out of the Country. Time will tell I guess.

My wife says exactly the same.

I don't think she does. She was never a constituency MP.

That is, just like this last year.

Rumour is that Anutin has got his ducks in a row and is ready to go. Smart money has always backed him to become PM sooner or later. He's no fool, and will likely do a good job. However, this being Thailand, nothing is certain.

Won't be good news for Expats; he is a Farang hater !

Elections here don't solve the problem.   The Conservative Elite decide who is going to run the Country, no matter who wins any Election !

The old guard in CM have been good to the Shinawatra family, believing they would solve their financial problems.

Time has proved that to be wrong as many northerners are as broke as they were decades ago.

The younger generation are a bit smarter and do not follow the same path, they want real reform and opportunities.

With Paetongtarn gone and Thaksin struggling the Shin clan is in it's final death throws as their are no more politically minded siblings to throw under the bus.

Anutin will make alliances to get into power and he will stifle the Shinwatras for good.

Will he be good for the country... doubtful, he was a lousy health minister and even more useless since then.

Phumtham Wetchayachai, acting as the representative of the caretaker government coalition, stated after a meetinh with leaders of the main opposition People's Party that all parties in the government coalition have accepted the conditions of People's Party (PP). The coalition is now awaiting PP's final decision.

Phumtham mentioned that he expects a speedy resolution and a government to be formed, and parliament dissolved within four months. At the same time, a crowd of Pheu Thai supporters gathered, chanting "Pheu Thai, fight on!" to show their support.

wishful thinking rather than critical analysis

The issue is not the Shinawatras - it's whether or not THailand is a functioning democracy run by the military.

What a stupid statement "THailand is a functioning democracy run by the military"   you living in the past payuet  is gone  as for the present there is no evidence the military is running democracy  all supposition on your part

THe quote is "whether or not THailand is a functioning democracy run by the military."

"no evidence the military is running democracy  all supposition on your part  " - and you obviously have no idea. I find it amazing that people can live in Thailand for years and yet have no idea of what is happening in Thai politics or how the country is run - just take 5 minutes and read up on the constitution , how it was formed and how it is still dominated by the military.

actually I don't think you have the ability to do that so here's a summary for your benefit.....Thailand’s military doesn’t need to win elections — it rigs the rules. Every coup brings a new constitution tilted their way. The 2017 charter gave them a hand-picked Senate that could outvote the public on who becomes PM. Add a Constitutional Court that dissolves reformist parties on “technicalities,” and you’ve got democracy on paper, military rule in practice. Even the 2024 Senate “reform” kept the balance stacked with military-friendly figures. Elections here don’t decide power — constitutions and courts do.

The Thai constitution was voted in by the people
