Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has disclosed assets worth 3.9 billion baht, revealing extensive wealth that includes three private jets and two speedboats. Anutin declared 1.09 billion baht in cash and deposits spread across more than two dozen bank accounts. This disclosure was made to the National Anti-Corruption Commission, fulfilling a requirement for government officials, and was publicly released on Tuesday.

Anutin, aged 58, leads the Bhumjaithai Party, Thailand's third largest in parliament. He ascended to the premiership following the removal of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by the Constitutional Court for ethical violations. The People’s Party, the largest parliamentary bloc, has supported Anutin, contingent upon his promise to dissolve parliament in four months, allowing for a general election and a constitutional amendment referendum.

The newly reported wealth includes investments worth about 655 million baht and an income of over 1.8 million baht reported last year. Anutin’s family fortune is closely tied to Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, a company with a history of securing significant government contracts, including the famously delayed and over-budget parliament building project.

Among other assets, Anutin owns multiple properties, luxury vehicles, collectible watches, amulets, and historic Benjarong porcelains. His connections and influence have reportedly grown due to his royalist alignment, potentially enhancing his position above military-backed party leaders. Despite denying involvement in last year’s Senate elections, about 75% of the new senators are reportedly linked to him or his party, Bhumjaithai.

Investigations related to the 2024 Senate elections have led to hundreds of suspects being summoned over alleged vote-rigging and money laundering. These ongoing inquiries continue to shape the political landscape.

Key Takeaways

  • Anutin declared assets worth 3.9 billion baht, ensuring transparency as mandated for officials.
  • His rise owes largely to backing from the largest parliamentary bloc, the People’s Party.
  • Investigations into Senate elections could impact Anutin’s tenure and political dynamics.

OMG how did he make it? 3bil+ what in the actuall FK!

Will be fascinating to watch how the inquiry in to the last Senate elections proceeds.

I suspect it'll get buried after the upcoming elections in 4+ months' time (assuming they actually occur). The military coup that follows a massive PP win will make it irrelevant in any case ...

It's about 127 million is USD conversion. I think Thaksin might have been a USD billionnaire - but I could be wrong about that - he also might have been a THB billionnaire. In any case, it doesn't change your point, which is an underscore of how a small group of ultra-rich families run this country for their own gain and that of their close associated families (e.g. inner and outer circles of influence). Of course many other countries are like this too (claim to be democratic but are actually rigged in favour of the closed circle of elites). In this region, however, there are signs of hope. The South Korean people stood up to the military back elites and were victorious in getting a real democracy. Courts overhauled and now judges respect democracy - how many ex-presidents are now in prison there? The Philippines too got rid of the Marcos dictatorship 40 years ago without any major violence, though they've been backsliding a lot in last decade.

He’s from a wealthy family. And been in the family business. At least give him the benefit of the doubt.

On the other hand those that have been in the military or civil service all their lives and career. Their wealth needs to be checked and explained

He must be a very hard worker.

Some of them, though not all, hail from small time business families that emigrated to Thailand and weren't Buddhist to begin with. They 'practised' the religion (publicly) to fit into society and seek opportunities, including marrying their sons/daughters into influential and wealthy Thai families, eventually securing the right to buy land, etc. Then, once firmly in power, that group inter-married and made sure no other foreign group could follow the same immigration/business path. Hence we have the property laws today which prohibit us from owning any kind of land. It's a careful stitch-up that's been cultivated over 50+ years.  Thai  husband and wife scholars Pasuk and Baker have written about this. Google.

Unfortunately, this is exactly the same thing happening in my home country, the USA, and actually has been the case for a long, long time. Countries like this are not democracies, they are pluitocracies. 😰

Why does anyone need over 20 bank accounts?

Meanwhile Bangkok Bank continues its war on 'dirty farangs'.

It's also, IMHO, why your country needs to outlaw money in politics - particularly from the nutjob right wing lobby groups like NRA, Israel - but get rid of ALL donations. That's step 1. Step 2 is to abandon the Electoral College and step 3 is to create multi party democracy (e.g. end the choice between only Rep/Dem, which in reality are two sides of the same coin - example US federal minimum wage is 7,25/hr and has been that way for more than 20 years, regardless of who holds power). Multi-party democracy (at presidential level) should mean runoff elections (not just a single vote) where those with lowest votes are disqualified and then the scond vote takes places, rinse and repeat in round 3 until a winner receives 50%+1 or more. They do this in many countries. Well-established and more democratic than what you have now.

Regarding Bangkok Bank, it's been under control of a HiSo Chinese-Thai family since the 1940s. The president is always from the same family and it's the only Thai bank that has a "local bank" presence in China. It has a big presence there and is (I think) the biggest Thai bank by capital in Thailand (could be wrong). So there may be pressure against westerners for some unknown reason coming from a third party, as it seems to be just Bangkok Bank causing trouble. Having said that, the Board of Directors has some well-respected invidual members like Amorn Chandarasomboon who is widely touted as the key drafter of the 1997 Thai Constitution, seen as the most egalitarian so far in the country's history. He's in charge of oversight.

Yes! I agree with everything you've written above and have written about them many times for years - especially the Electoral College ( http://www.billsmart.com/writing/opinion/electoral_college/electoral_college.htm ) and runoff elections. 😉

Mr. GPT says

  • Biggest Thai bank by capital (market cap): Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) — around US $12.4 billion.
  • Largest by asset base: Bangkok Bank

Too bad farangs are not in the running to be Thai politicians.

I for one would not be complaining if I had a bit of extra folding stuff laying around like they do.

And I am not talking about tissue paper

Imagine, some here from AN would run for a seat.......I think it would be high time to leave the place 😁

Clearly, another "man of the people". The wealth connected with government contracts is purely a coincidence.

Tied to loans. For example,  there can be a 20 million mortgage from a bank. The lending covenants can require that a bank account be tied to the  mortgage for debt service.   Thailand banks have a weird structure too and don't make it easy to manage a bank account that is located in a city different than where one resides.

this is what he declared not he owns, black market holdings maybe woth the double

Government building contracts including the new parliament building , very impressive.

He will get even richer when new Government construction contracts are awarded to Sino-Thai!
