UK Pension Age To Rise To 80?

The UK government may face pressure to raise the State Pension Age (SPA) dramatically — possibly up to 80 years old — unless major reforms are made. Current law already sets the SPA to increase from 66 to 67 between 2026-2028, and to 68 in the mid-2040s.

Experts argue that without significant changes in how pensions are funded, demographic shifts (longer lifespans, more retirees vs. workers), and increasing fiscal strain, further increases may be inevitable.

Proposals to reduce the statutory funding burden include trimming benefits, increasing contributions, or altering eligibility rules. But these options bring trade-offs: many older workers are already facing health, employment, or inequality barriers which make working longer difficult. Research shows that prior increases in pension age disproportionately harm those who had left paid work before the rise, had lower incomes or poorer health, or rented housing.

The government has launched a new State Pension Age Review, legally required every six years, to assess whether the SPA remains “appropriate.” This review must consider life expectancy, public finances, labour market conditions and fairness across generations. Rising the pension age to 80—even as a theoretical scenario—raises questions about whether people currently in their 40s or younger could be affected, what supports would be in place, and how society balances intergenerational equity.

Key Takeaways

1. Potential SPA to 80 — Experts warn that without reform, SPA might have to rise to 80 to keep pensions affordable amid demographic and fiscal pressure.

2. Earlier age increases already planned — SPA will reach 67 by 2028, and 68 by mid-2040s, under existing legislation.

3. Unequal impact — Those out of work in late 50s, in poor health, or with less wealth will be hardest hit by future SPA increases; policy must address fairness.

Why bother paying money to old white people born in the UK, when you can spend it all on young non-white men born outside the UK?

How many folks live to 80? Maybe the UK govt should just admit theyre broke

More than 50%. It will need doing soon so why don't the spineless Government do it now. 70 by 2030, 75 by 2035, 80 by 2040. Labour are going to lose anyway so why not do something worthwhile.

People are living longer, but they are not remaining healthy and able to work longer.

Add to that the arrival of AI stripping out jobs and it is very clear the problem will not be addressed by raising the state pension age.

If they ever do that, then what would be the point of even paying into a government state pension scheme? perhaps that would be the point, to force people into private pension schemes.

There is no choice the government takes the money whether you like it or not  Tax and National insurance..yes you can opt to have NI payed into a private "scheme" but you can't opt not to pay it at all.

Considering that the UK has one of the lowest pension amounts in Europe, what went wrong?

you have no choice in the matter, its funded partly by National Insurance contributions , which everyone over a low threshold have to pay,

State pension will not raise to 80, it maybe will not increase to 70

very few , so presumably those that do should enjoy a very generous state pension in the future

The French government said they were near bankrupt, but the people are taking the street to change retirement age back to 60.

I know, Brits like to describe the French as cowards, but "entitled idiots" would be  better suited.

'racist filth'?? Could you elucidate?

You mean you didn’t spot it?

Howabout the references to colour, the exclusion of non white people born in the UK? The assertion that money is being withheld from ‘only white Btrits’ to be spent on young nonwhite foreigners

Of course you didn’t spot it.

The.ones hardest hit will be those outside the UK.

Inside, with the benefit system, if you don't or can't get one, there's another benefit available, some will actually be better off claiming alternate benefit if they have health issues.

May be not by raising the pension age alone, but, when combined with a purge of illegal immigrants, a change in foreign aid policy to one we can afford,,  and an upgraded, "fit for purpose" border control force, things could only get better for the UK and its population

Go on admit it  you rather like the idea, how could anybody not ?

You'd think after Covid was allowed to ravage through Old Folks' Homes, there would be plenty in the kitty; pensions are not paid to dead people.

The racist was triggered and spewed his off topic mongering of racist fifth.

Hardly off topic seeing as how the thread is about a lack of money available for pensions, it only natural to suggest and explore  reasons for the cash shortfall.   There was no "racist filth"  just a questioning of priorities, you should calm down a bit.

Would you give all your spare cash to strangers rather than use it to look after needy members  your own family first  ?   I doubt it,    Would that be racist?  of course not

You don't know how brits describe the french , it is certainly not as cowards, that "honour" is reserved for the Italians

The French regularly take to the streets to protest,  good on them if you ask me

The average life expectancy for males in the UK is 79 years. For women, 83.

Setting the pension age at 80 would cut the outlay for pensions by about half.

Q. Why are women stronger than men?

A. It takes 6 men to carry a man to his grave. It only takes one woman to put him in his coffin.

Not to mention all the illegals stripping jobs.

Think I prefer the AI, it's less stabby and rapey.

And yet the average length of time to claim the state pension in the UK is 8 years.

That first reform, will be means testing the State Pension.

Shocked and stunned, that this has not already happened.

You don't pay into a state pension scheme now. NI is just tax, to fund the migrants

What I spotted could be I suppose considered as prejudicial, or discriminatory, but certainly not racist!

There's  plenty of money to go around ,

if your not,  straight, white, and of true British heritage.

Just one more example of broken Britain. :coffee1:

An immigrant turns up with no qualifications, no connections to help out finding work and little or no English language but still manages to take your job off you.

erm…..
