Suggestions for sit down Christmas dinner orBuffet in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

Family keen to get some discussion started to select a venue for sit down family traditional Christmas dinner or Christmas buffet on 25 December. Could be hotel or restaurant of whatever, hoping for reasonable price, suggestions from past recent experiences much appreciated.

Meanwhile eldest Thai granddaughter has put up a few signs at CM uni with same conent.

Wild Hog usually has a Christmas buffet.... They have one seating

The Dukes has sit down dinners....They have a few different seating time options.....

The Duke's seems popular if you like the American style Christmas dinner. Not sure if all four branches offer the Christmas buffet or just the Ping River branch. I seem to recall that someone mentioned last year that they went to one of the branches and it was plated service rather than help yourself buffet.

I think 2 years ago for plated service (3 course) the price was around 700 baht for Ham, 900 for Turkey and 1,700 for prime rib. A few choices for starter and choice of pie for dessert.

Thanks. Prices not too bad. For my Thai son primerib would be his choice, 3 other adults turkey and 2 little kids share ham.

Last year I went to the Centara Riverside Hotel. I thought it was very lacking and not impressive. Better than nothing but I saw other better options that I didn't book in time (The Dukes looked way better).

We had an incident at the ping river branch about 4 years ago. My Thai son made the phone bookng but mentioned several times 24th Dec. He thought that was the correct date for westerners.

We went (7 total) on 24th, waiter quickly realized there's confusion and quickly got the owner who was just great. He gathered 2 waiters and instructed them to service us as close as possible the set menu for the 25th.

He gave my son the wine menu and said 'select a red and a white. Son did that, the wine came and the waiter said 'free'. A free slice of all their cakes and pies appeared plus a free bottle of a good American whisky for my son. And wrapped gifts for son's wife and 3 kids.

Son asked for the bill. Bill came, owner appeared and took the bill and said 'no charge',

I took a date to Duangtawan for a Christmas Dinner on 25th last year.

This place used to be a top hotel in the 80s maybe, but it looked very dated. The surroundings were not super luxury, just a big hotel that used to be grand a long time ago.

The food was ample and varied, and not bad, especially the grilled meats and turkey, but the clientele was not great. Nobody even made an effort to dress for Christmas Day, I stuck out like a sore thumb in my tie and suit.

I would not go there again, though there was not nothing really wrong, it was not that great really.

Centara last year was similar. Cold turkey and random tourists that just wanted some grub.

The highlight was this skinny little Thai man sitting alone that would fill up the entire table with plates (literally) eat it all then disappear for a while and repeat. I'm certain we he going in to the bathroom to purge (as you do of course).

Wear flip flops. Tie and suit? Its Thailand

That's exactly what it felt like.

Though the turkey was hot and actually the food was very varied and not bad, you felt like you were in an airport canteen, even if the surroundings used to have a hint of luxury at one time and they did make an effort.

I won't be going to a hotel for Christmas again. I've done the Shangri La buffet and it's similar.

Hey, Christmas is Christmas!

It's suit and tie, non negotiable. Wouldn't feel like Christmas in flip flops.

Nobody wears that in Thailand except workers

Dukes looked legit but I missed the booking date. That's my plan this year.

One only experience with Shangri La, family member had worked there for some timr (had eaten many times previously in 5 star hotels and 5 star restaurants. The hotel offered a free meal, everything free, anything you want, for all of family, for all employees, once a year.

Family member (my son) made a booking. We dressed up (total 3 adults, 2 children). My family member showed the 'staff reservation' to the staff member at the restaurant door, she called a lady supervisor who was very rude and revelled in her opportunity to make a lower level employer (in her view) feel inferior.

Son tried to ask a couple of questions, she ignored him. I asked the same questions in Thai and in English. Her response 'I don't speak to foreigners'.

We lasted 20 minutes, no food ordered, and my son whispered to his wife and me 'let's go home'. We all stood up, rude supervisor lost her mind and abused my son. We walked out.

Next day hotel GM came to my son's work area and spoke to my son, instant apology, GM wanted to make another booking. Son politely said 'never mind, please forget about it'.

Absolutely agree, does no harm to get dressed up. Our Thai friends certainly wouldn't turn up in flip flops.

I reckon a restaurant would be much more dignified and festive, compared to any hotel buffeet no matter how luxurious.

Has to be the better option.

Exactly right, Thai men dress better than farang, I noticed that.

Shangri-la. Sumptuous fine dinner including wine. Not for Cheap Charlies

Dukes stopped doing the buffet a few years ago.  But the plates are a generous portion.

Well, it's easier to remove a piece of turkey from your naked knee instead long pants when falling out of your mouth😁

Yes, but eating food that has fallen onto your clothes first is a good way of getting just that little bit extra fiber into your diet...
