Dress to impress

25 long years ago I used to frequent Nana more often than I care to admit, and most ofetn used to wear shorts, t-shirt and flip flops.

On the few occasions that I went straight from work in business shirt and trousers, the very same bar girls who I knew well from other nights would give me loads more attention, simply because I was looking smart.

My mate who often came on holiday noticed this and (like a fool) bought himself a 3-piece suit to wear to Nana, just to impress bar girls! Ok the suit had a 'value' for when he went back to Oz, but the reason for buying it was to wear out to impress hookers! It was really quite odd.

Do any of you make a bit of an effort in order to gain favour from the ladies of the night?

I find they often reduce my st rates when I dress up in a 3 piece suit bought on lower sukumvhit.

Seems the guys with girls nowadays look like total bums. Cargo shorts, Singha tank tops, flip flops, unshaven.  Have a wad of 20k on you I bet they could careless.

They buy them. Why should how they dress matter. Not real impressive in any form in any way.

If you look rich, they might expect you to leave a bigger tip?

Or they might want to latch on to you as a boyfriend or a sponsor?

Otherwise, it's a complete joke. It's not like when you had to go out to a night club and try to impress women by dressing sharp and actually having some game.

No way would I wear a suit here. Even just wearing my leather hightops gets strange looks like I'm trying to be hi-so.

Just decent casual dressing for the occasion.

You can dress and look smart even in shorts t-shirt and flip flops, while others looks like trailer trash.

Still I never see anyone in flip flop at the higher end restaurants yet, and for evening I prefer pants as well, and a decent polo shirt or classic shirt

Shorts (with only two pockets front and one rear) and a stylish polo shirt (NOT tucked into your shorts and girthed up with a 3" black belt from 1975) and a pair of shoes (not black ankle-boots) will see you to success in virtually every social situation in Thailand, barring a Royal Ceremony.

But on the other hand, if you want to give the (correct) impression that you have the dress sense of a Chav and the last time you looked good was as a 10 year-old and your Mother dressed you, go for a sleeveless T-shirt (emblazoned with the name of a beer, a rugby or football club, your favorite band, or a motorcycle or Formula 1 team - tucked in - obviously), calf high black socks and the aforementioned black ankle boots, and  the ubiquitous below-the-knee cargo shorts.

Oh, and you probably have dyed Jet Black hair with a stringy ponytail and MPB.  I won't mention the lack of bodily cleanliness.

C'mon - we all know this guy. :coffee1:

Yes, I  just ask the ladies, where to find the best som tam poo pla ra... and if I visit the place , I’ll even dab a little pla ra behind my ears.

100% it can backfire! say one is at the Hilton, a visiting  short timer, off the coconut bar might clock the business class luggage tags and bam: the taxi fare one usually pays to get rid of the gets a hefty top-up on the usual

Leather waist coat? yeah that is odd

The guys in the Singhs, flip flops, unshaven probably think they have dressed up, you should see them usually

If you're trying to impress Thai hookers by dressing smartly, you've got bigger problems than worrying about your dress code.

FMD.

This done via the wallet.

The way one dresses says more about how that person feels about himself. I never present myself in public unless I am clean shaven, have ironed my clothes, have polished my dress shoes or cleaned the smudges from my sport shoes, cleaned or manicured my nails, taken a shower and brushed my teeth. I do all of that because I have respect for myself and don't want to be perceived as some low life "nasty" farang. In my younger years I ran the red-light districts in Manila, Philippines for 11 years, and I always wore a suit and tie. Only the finest of the bar girls dared approach me because I intimidated the ones with low self-confidence and intelligence. If all one is trying to attract by dressing like a bum is low self-esteem and ignorant/stupid bar girls, then that says a whole lot about your own insecurities.

Got the money, get the babe.

Money maketh the man.

Yeah, I really hope he's tongue in cheek with his post. Because anyone with so much 'self respect' shouldn't be baning hookers, or at least trying to impress them.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt....

Just a general observation, farangs in Thailand are nothing like as well dressed as they were 40/50 years ago. Night time girls will, of course, accept money from almost anyone but they still prefer men who are well turned out.

Curious what years and although it has been a long time since I was there I can't imagine one person running (as in managing) all the red light areas - plus some of the outlets used to have different owners (a long time ago.....)

No, but I never wear t-shirt, shorts and flip floppers; so, I probably dress desendt enough to get plenty of attention...🥰 – likely the stack of 1000-baht notes in my shirt's breast pocket also helps me being "handsum"...:whistling::cheesy:

The last thing you want to do in Thailand is draw attention to yourself. The way to go is blending in. No need to tell others what you have, you can just somehow afford it.

A valuable lesson it takes some people years and maybe even a disaster to learn. Wearing a suit around red light areas is exactly the opposite of this advice.

Learn to be confident enough to know you are Ok without needing external validation. You won't get true respect anyhow, it almost always attracts envy. Not worth it.

Your friend with the suit was likely trying to compensate for not really having enough money for his desired partying and lifestyle. He tried to mask this with fancy tailoring so he could see surface level validation from others. How is the guy doing now years later?

Where I come from in Tennessee, when I say "ran", in this context it means I frequented the red light districts in a big way.

Thanks. Interesting how the use of the 'English" language can have a vastly different meaning in different countries.
