  • Aaah, yes, the old story...........Foreigner gives wife millions of baht, things go pear shaped.    Oh well, original ending, ATM theft. 😂 I love the Dutch 👍

  • Unpopular opinion.   It's always long timers causing the biggest problems 🙄

  • An old Dutchman attempted to steal an ATM. This sounds like something out of a bad movie.

6 years is not a long timer. Many foreigners have been here for 20-30 years plus. In my own case I first arrived here in1962. We do not rob banks, and we abide by the law, mostly.

Cops did not have a hard time apprehending him. They just followed the scrap marks! 😁

They most disturbing thing is that they make this a 5 minutes long tv news item..

it wouldn’t even make the newspapers in my homecountry if some Thai guy steal some atm.

You seem to be insinuating that this was a professional job.

That's not the same feeling that I get when reading the OP.

You're right, I was too quick to react and responded based on my gut feeling.

Adopting the American business model, I guess.   This is very common here in San Diego County.

10 million baht for a restaurant that must have been a pretty fancy place maybe he was going for a Michelin star. Sounds like the wife tapped him out and the man got desperate, but an ATM of all things. Of all crimes, this has to be one of the dumbest. The chances of succeeding are just slightly higher than the chances of robbing a bank successfully.

Which means, that sometimes you do! You never cease to amaze me! LOL

Khon Kaen police have arrested a Dutch man for stealing an ATM from a shop in the city’s Ban Thum community early on 21 September 2025, at approximately 01:00. The suspect, identified as 6-year Thai resident Mr. Sijtse [surname not provided], was found hiding near the scene after using a car and chain to remove the machine.

The arrest followed a call to local police from a witness, prompting officers from Ban Ped Police Station and the tourist police to respond immediately. At the scene, a black pickup was found with a large chain securing the ATM at its rear. The suspect was located in nearby tall grass and taken into custody for questioning.

During the police interview, Sijtse reportedly said he had previously given his Thai wife more than 10 million baht to open a restaurant and support their household. He claimed a recent argument over insufficient funds prompted him to drive out and commit the theft, by using the pickup, belonging to his wife’s relative, to drag the ATM away from the front of the shop. He stated he has lived in Thailand for six years and resided with his wife in Khon Kaen.

Authorities have charged him with nighttime theft causing damage to property and using a vehicle to facilitate the crime. The bank has also filed an official complaint and police have opposed bail at the investigation stage. Investigators are continuing to examine CCTV footage and vehicle records to determine if anyone else was involved.

Key Takeaways

• Dutch man arrested in Khon Kaen after stealing an ATM with a car and chain.

• Dispute with his Thai wife over finances reportedly motivated the theft.

• Police have charged him and opposed bail while investigation continues.

In NZ it was called the hole in the wall gang who used tow trucks to pull them out and usually they got away clean until the banks. made them more secure

😅😅😅

looks like there was very very few bolts securing it to the concrete pad.

was she from a bar?

just marry a Thai woman with a decent education and job or don't get married at all.

Some people will try anything to remain in the land of smiles. Soon to be deported.

The name Sijtze is derived from the Frisian word "siet", which means "wise". Sijtze has a very positive and valuable meaning, as it is related to wisdom and guidance. 😂 😂 😂

Thank god it was not a Brit

Two Brits preceded  him with a similar crime, about 15 years ago, in Chonburi.

If recall correctly, they got caught after the third ATM machine they had removed

That's one way to deal with Bank Account being frozen I guess...

Bob.

Seemingly he mentioned he was only after the coins in the ATM

Police asked him why

He said I thought the change would do me good 👍

What an incredibly stupid thing to do. Probably wouldn't have been able to extract the cash from it anyway?

He was charged with “nighttime “ theft ! That’s very serious!
