Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's ex-Prime Minister, has formally requested a royal pardon following a Supreme Court decision sentencing him to one year in prison. The move comes after the Ministry of Justice confirmed the request, noting that he had the right as a convict to apply for this individual pardon. Earlier this year, Thaksin's sentence was reduced from eight to one year, making him eligible for the pardon application.

The Supreme Court's decision on 9 September 2025 led to immediate action from Thaksin, who applied for a pardon the very next day. The Ministry of Justice, under Police General Tawee Sodsong, processed and forwarded the request to the Cabinet Secretariat. While a new Cabinet was appointed on 19 September and is yet to function fully, the process for reviewing Thaksin’s request has already commenced.

An inside source at the Ministry of Justice stated that submitting a pardon request is a standard right for all prisoners. This process allows individuals to petition the king for clemency and is a regular procedure within the justice system.he ministry outlined that once a request is submitted through the prison, it goes through a series of reviews and is sent to the Office of the Privy Council for a final decision.

Despite past reductions in his sentence, Thaksin continues to seek a royal pardon. According to the source, his understanding of his penal status might alter with each application. The Supreme Court's recent verdict necessitates a one-year term, and while Thaksin has been receiving medical care at the Police General Hospital, his situation does not involve leaving custody.

The Ministry of Justice's upper echelons confirm that no individual or department can withhold the request, ensuring it proceeds through the hierarchical steps. Each level either supports the pardon or maintains the appropriateness of the current sentence. Ultimately, the decision about granting a royal pardon rests with the monarchy, beyond interference from any official process.

Key Takeaways

  • Thaksin Shinawatra has requested a royal pardon after a one-year sentence.
  • The Ministry of Justice is processing his request through the required channels.
  • The final decision lies with the monarchy and involves multiple governmental steps.

he has no shame or any remorse of what hedid wrong and why he was convicted in the first place!

so right after the sentence he applies for a pardon already...

he thinks 1 week is enough for him...

let him think a bit more about his lack of shame...

all he thinks about is himself!

Thought he had volunteered as foreman to get rid of all the sewerage he’s made since his return from Dubai that would take a good year of work

The con man has already received a royal pardon reducing his origial sentence fro eight years to one year. He cheated and didn't serve the one year.  Now resentenced to one year he has the nerve to requst another pardon.

The ego and lack of shame of this man knows no bounds.

Make him finish the one year. Another pardon for this shirker would be totally unjust.

How many pardons does this guy wants….seems he is collecting them ….

It's not hate... it's called justice, which Thaksin seems to thinks he's above.

Did anyone really expected any other move from Thaksin? It's a normal process for all those who found to be guilty, and I see his point too, as far as he is concerned, if he can get it, then why not?

That is because his persecution is a political witch hunt and Thaksin is very popular with the people which is seen as a threat by the ruling Thai elites!!

Hundreds of innocents killed, maybe more. Thaksin should be reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

No I did not forget but there was Shin involved too and before that there was a coup because Mr Thaksin did not want to pay tax over the Thaicom satellite which he earned billions with...The whole family Shin is filling their pockets so called to benefit of the people in Thailand , but only for their wins...

Thaksin has sought royal pardons at least three times: in 2023, reducing his eight-year sentence to one year; in 2024, shortening his parole; and now in September 2025, for a new one-year sentence from a September 9, 2025, conviction.

Maybe he is going for a record??:whistling:

The only possible fair sentence is time served. Full pardon.

Unless you have permanently lived in Thailand, particularly in the North, throughout his two terms as Prime Minister, I do not think you would understand the complicated circumstances. There are more Thai people these days that would like to see him released from prison than there are wanting him kept in custody. The fascination with this guy is what he did in infrastructure projects, creating businesses and bringing prosperity to rural Thai folk, especially in Lanna and Issan in the North. I lived in North Thailand at the time and saw the beneficial developments. Where I lived in a valley among the mountains, for the first time we were able to access the internet via AIS from a mast built in the village - absolutely brilliant!
