Reactions To Both Coffee And Tea

Featured Replies

Hi there, as I've become older I'm virtually intolerant to Coffee and Tea. I don't worry about either during the day but in the mornings I enjoy coffee or tea but they come with complications. Firstly I feel lethargic, with a sore throat and headache, this can take 2-3 days to go, even if I restrict myself to water. Has anyone else gone through this and is there anything I can do about to rectify this problem?

I also have a problem with coffee now (age 70).

1 coffee no problems

2 coffees and my stomach complains

3 coffees and I feel sick for hours

So more tea, less coffee now.

Thanks for your reply BritMan but I have the same reaction to tea too. Even sugar or sugar based products give me the same reaction. It's rather dificult living in Thailand with this condition as they load everything up with sugar.

Have you tried  drinking tea with honey (no milk)?

It's a decent alternative.

Honey gives me the same reaction as sugar does.

My doc says stay loose on the black tea, it causes kidney stones

I use Monkfruit. I used Splenda and Equal for many years until I learned it can play with your gut, so I switched to Monkfruit. It's natural and sweet enough for coffee and tea. Green tea and Chamomile are easy on your stomach and possibly helpful. There are quite a few different coffees now, some being more mild than others. Adding sugar and milk can make mucus, which can hurt your throat, along with the acid in coffee giving some reflux. As we age, we can't always eat or drink things we have all our lives. Many things people have eaten for a long time can have adverse affects you don't notice until later.

You got me lost there. Is it sugar that triggers your reaction or coffee/tea.

I drink coffee without sugar, as I like the taste of Mocca beans...

The Monkfruit extract below (green one) which is an excellent alternative to sugar - the best alternative I've found so far, nothing else is comparable (expecially considering the aftertaste most if not all other sweeteners give).

That said: IF caffeine is the issue, it doesn't matter what sweetener the Op is using.

Yes, it could also be caffeine, something he may have ingested for years that is causing problems now. Caffeine wouldn't usually cause lethargy, but it can from intolerance he developed over the years. It's more likely the acid in the coffee affecting his esophagus. The headaches can come from caffeine, or by taking it for so long then stopping it.

An addition. If it ends up being the sugar or sugar based, you might so what I do, and take the Monkfruit with you wherever you go, and learn how to say no sugar and hand them the Monkfruit, as I do when I go to Amazon or other coffee and tea shops.

Don't drink black tea or coffee or sugar if they cause problems.

Ginger tea is nice, i prefer it with sugar but maybe try without or add a sweetener.

Ginger is good for your stomach

I am 75 drink coffee (several cups a day - Italian style) and tea. Never have a problem

IAW the teachings of Dr. William Li, I drink at least 2 black unsweetened coffees and 2 green tee (one matcha) also unsweetened no milk or dairy of any kind.  I am 79 and these do not even affect my BP as I also check that daily.  They do not affect my sleep either and no cramps.  Since both have been proven (can buy Dr. Li's books if you want to check the testing whereabouts and results) to help prevent some cancers also have seen other health studies saying the same thing about almost all teas and coffee (both with no additives, some of which say 1-3 cups of black unsweetened coffee daily lowers risk of some cancers.)

It's about "caffeine". I get decaffeinated coffee (however there is still some caffeine). I'm trying it right now see what happens. Caffeine irritates my bladder muscles as well. I'm sensitive to caffeine (chocolates, coffee & tea)and salt. Daily exercise helps a lot (with getting out salt and caffeine out of body).
It is the time to stop anything made by coffee or chocolate (dark cookies too).

Does anyone drink tea without eating a biscuit or something with it? I love a cup of tea probably two or three a day, but cannot drink a cup of tea without a biscuit.

I have these exact same symptoms if I have too much coke (zero).

I guess caffeine is the standout shard ingredient between the two drinks, but maybe there's more?

And, no, unfortunately I have not been able to rectify the problem over the last 15 years, other than simply avoiding CokeZ.

Hi Mason45! I have the same problem. When I first moved to Thailand in 2010, I could drink 8 of those 3in1 coffee packets per day, and I loved it. Over the past 5 years or so, caffeine has become very toxic to me. I keep experimenting with it because I like the "kick" it gives me, and without it, I feel so tired and lethargic with no energy and no motivation to do anything but sit in my recliner. Lately, I can't even drink half a cup of coffee or even tea without feeling ill. I no longer get that "kick", and I just feel sick. It affects my blood pressure, and I have started having an irregular heartbeat and attacks of A-fib, so I have to be very careful not to put too much in my system. It feels as though my body is not metabolizing the caffeine normally, and whereas the normal half-life of a cup of coffee with caffeine is about 4 hours, it seems it takes me a good 24 hours to clear my system of the caffeine. If I drink too much, the caffeine builds up in my body, and I feel absolutely horrible. The caffeine is just another "drug", and it is highly addictive. I wake up craving a cup of coffee or tea, but as soon as I drink it, I regret the feeling it gives me. I'm still trying to give it up, but it's very difficult. There's no doubt that your problem is with the caffeine. I have a feeling that people all over the world are experiencing the same side effects, but nobody talks about it, and the scientists keep telling us that coffee is good for us. One day the truth will come out about caffeine products. We are being lied to, and it's no different than what happened with the tobacco industry years ago. The coffee industry is making a fortune, and they will do anything necessary to hide the truth from us.

An occasional coffee is ok to overcome brain fog ,however a frappe does seem to bother me less than hot coffee

I have never drunk coffee. I have not drunk tea for over 50 years.

cafe con leche, cafe au lait !

best way to start new day.

half good hot coffee, other half good old hot milk, just not boiled it to save sweetness. no need sugar in it.

your belly might say thank you for soft start of day, mine does in 66 y.

It could be diabetes or blood pressure, so go and get checked out

Maybe get some merabregon tablets to relax bladder muscles

I try to deal with it by right diet and supplements, not such as medicine like that. Side effects are another problem.

A few cups of black coffee a day have proven health benefits.

Preferably in the morning.

That 3 in 1 stuff is unhealthy.

I feel sorry for people who can't tolerate coffee (and Mormons). It's a great pleasure.

Personally I have my coffee fix in the morning, have some hot natural cocoa (not Dutched) with a teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon (the cheap stuff is toxic over time) after lunch and also a healthy dose of green tea.

No caffeine after that.

I guess if I had the OP's unfortunate problem, I would experiment with herbal teas. There are many interesting flavors in those.

At bedtime I do drink herbal tea made from leaves of chamomile and passion flower. The passion flower tastes disgusting though.

First have a couple of glasses of water in the morning before coffee, personally have found it makes a difference. It’s difficult for me to give up a good cup of kickass in the morning.

An electorate imbalance is something to consider, such as lacking adequate potassium and magnesium.

I recently read it's a very good idea to drink a glass of immediately after waking and before eating breakfast. I started doing that. I haven't noticed any difference but can't see how it could hurt.
