Thailand's tourism and sports minister, Artthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, aims to attract 2-3 million more Chinese tourists during his four-month term, acknowledging the country's declining status as a "tourism giant." He announced the "Big Impact, Act Fast" policy during his initial visit to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), emphasizing the need to target markets with growth potential.

Competition from emerging travel destinations has prompted a strategic shift in Thailand's tourism approach. The minister highlighted that despite recent declines, China remains a promising market. The TAT is set to promote Thailand’s strengths, such as Thai cuisine and hospitality, through collaboration with local and international partners.

Mr. Artthakorn plans to focus on high-growth markets including Japan, South Korea, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Jordan. He also aims to sustain robust visitor numbers from key markets such as the US, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, and Poland. Efforts will continue to encourage tourists to explore second-tier cities to distribute tourism income more evenly across Thailand.

The TAT projects 33.4 million foreign arrivals this year, a decline from last year's 35.5 million. Mr. Artthakorn urges ambitious efforts in the coming months to surpass this forecast. Tourism safety enhancements, such as promoting the Thailand Tourist Police app and using artificial intelligence to prevent crime, are priorities.

With the upcoming 33rd SEA Games in the fourth quarter, the ministry seeks to showcase Thailand's safety and reliability to the international community. Success during the event would bolster confidence in Thailand as a travel destination.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand plans to attract 2-3 million more Chinese tourists in four months.
  • The strategy focuses on growth markets and enhancing safety measures.
  • The 33rd SEA Games offer an opportunity to elevate Thailand’s global image.

Promise?

I live near this auspicious temple of a revered prince situated on to top of a hill where those chines tourists are going there in their droves to offer alms and prey for good luck, by burning fire crackers all day long that its sounds resembles a Battlefield,

that start 7am till late in the evening day in day out with absolutely no considerations to the population living nearby.

Aims, fires, misses...

Did anyone ask the Chinese if they're coming?

I mean, it is October already and there needs to be plane flights booked and hotels arranged, especially with the 33rd SEA Games coming.

And did this sports and tourism minister bother to check to see if the last 3 months of the year coincide with any major Chinese holidays?  (The only one left is their Mid Autumn Day, which spans Oct. 1-8).  But the big Chinese New Year doesn't begin until February, 2026.

I think most western tourists and expats in Thailand would prefer less Chinese tourists as a whole

Only the Thai Chinese hotels and restaurants look forward to the Chinese tourist

Who only spend their money there 🤑

it just amazes me to see TAT contradictory posts and misleading information, how can anybody trust anything out of their mouth... just  2 days ago they posted expecting a decrease in Chinese tourists, today the anticipated and increase, wonder what it will be tomorrow

says it all really. No mention of long term investment in infrastructure related to tourism or long term preservation of natural beauty spots. Just make it big ,make it fast. The only part missing was …and milk it for all we can get.

Why don’t they just fill the empty print space a cartoon?
