A 28-year-old German tourist was injured in the early hours of the morning after stepping on a loose drain cover that flipped beneath him on a pavement in central Pattaya. The incident occurred at around 04.30 on October 21 in front of Soi 14, Central Pattaya Road. Rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Pattaya Foundation and local police quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.

The victim, identified as Mr Christoph, sustained minor injuries, including grazes to his left knee. Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene, but the tourist declined to be taken to hospital, opting instead to return to his accommodation. Witnesses said the man had been walking normally along the footpath when he stepped on the metal drain cover, which then flipped open, causing one of his legs to fall into the drain.

Local residents who witnessed the incident immediately notified the authorities. They reported that the cover appeared unstable and may not have been securely fitted, posing a potential danger to pedestrians. Officials from Pattaya City Hall have been urged to inspect the area and ensure safety checks on similar infrastructure to prevent future incidents.

Pavement and drainage maintenance have long been issues in some parts of Pattaya. Damaged or unsecured drain covers have caused accidents before, leading to public calls for stricter municipal safety inspections. Such incidents raise concerns about urban management and the safety of tourists.

No official statement has yet been released by the Pattaya City Municipality, but local officials are expected to address the issue following public concern.

Ouch.

Could have been much worse.

Memo to self -- avoid stepping on drain covers in Thailand.

Something similar happened to me once in the hotel car park.... got off my bike and the leg vanished from under me. At the time I was concerned the ensuing cuts would get infected from the gunk that came up with my leg. Damaged ankles from the wonderful paving is not the only danger!

Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.  Officials only ever act AFTER an event.  SOP for the traffic police.

I NEVER step on drain covers in any country 🙂

Still a long way to first world if you look at this pavement and drains.

1. Perfect timing by the photographer.

2. Why is the German taking off his shirt as he is about to step on a drain cover?

3. So much garbage in the street around the drain, is this where others have also come a cropper and lost their drinks they were carrying?

Good thing this is Thailand. No accountability. If this had happened in the US, the city would have been sued for millions.

Always have to look down while walking in Thailand. Don't walk on drain covers.

Be careful of loose or slippery tiles.

Expect a motorbike to appear from nowhere. And then there's crossing the road. Goodluck.

I've been doing that for years already and it's not my obsessive compulsive disorder either, it just looks like it.

Hope the drain cover is ok?

You are not going to see the motorbike if you are always looking down.

They're more reliable in some countries.

Problem is how to evaluate it before the accident?

You must have poor eyesight. Peripheral vision. I can still see the sides. Besides, you can quickly scan 10 yards ahead while looking out for other problems.

Walking in the middle of the street helps.

None of that in Da Nang, verified that las week, a lot of the power supply and other wires are underground, infrastructure look more like Malaysia/Singapore, while the shopping malls are more modest than here. But who needs consumerism.

While you are looking down your head will hit some sign that is placed too low.

That won't do much help. The German should sue them!
