If You Were (or Are) Living in Isaan, Where and Why

Featured Replies

I havent been up in Isaan for many years. For a variety of reasons Im thinking of heading there in January for several months.

If you were, or are living in an Isaan city, could I ask which one and why? I am particularly interested in actual cities themselves vis a vis the sticks.

I lean alot to Buriram because of Football and Nong Khai because of the River and Vientiene, but all thoughts welocom.

See I have never been to Udon, except just riding the Highway through to Nong Khai. What do they nick you for rent? I dont drive so do they have tuk tuks/remorks/rickshaws? In Siem, I pay about a $1 a ride in town.

I like the international access.

Haven't been to Isaan unless you have been to Roi Et, lots of good foreigners too 👍

I usually fly once a month.

The most beautiful city in Thailand, with the most beautiful woman ❤️

Thank you Thailand. 🙏

Recommendation here for Buriram.

It has everything including an airport.

So does Udon Thani (but no decent football team).

Prasat, Surin. Because Isan is still sane.

Udon thani as that is the only place you can live somewhat normal. Wouldn't know why I'd ever move there, even if i would be broke it makes more sense to stay in BKK to network or restart business / jobs etc. If I was broke retired I'd also focus on something near the sea, plenty of places for a single person to still live just as cheap at many islands.

I think this man is right.

Roi Et is big enough to find everything you need.  What we don't appear to have is:

- Russians
- Indians
- Drunk foreigners causing issues (no frequent mentions in Aseannow news)
- A big red light district

However, if you can survive without these, I think you'll be fine. 😉

you would be one of the reasons I would live there. Seems to suit reasonable people.

North side definitely a better choice than NE / Isan, IMHO, and that's 17 yrs experience, and yea, I explored every nook & cranny of the area.

ALTHOUGH ... I wouldn't live above Hua Hin, do to the AQI / PM2.5 levels.

Below Hua Hin would be my preference, and if not where we are, probably Surat Thani (not Samui), Phang Nga (not Khao Lak), or Krabi (not Ao Nang) provinces.   Maybe Chumphon province.

Landscape, limestone karsts are stunning, w/ beaches.  Better air, less congestion.

To answer the OP, lived in Udon Thani, because my village orphan lived there, and if I could have left earlier than 17 yrs, I would have left after 2 yrs there.

Very tolerable, but that's about it.  If stuck in the NE, not a bad place to be stuck, as had almost everything, Including bad air and congestion in downtown.  Everything except beaches.

Without a 'school or work' schedule ... not a place I'd want to be based ... as every available moment, 3 months of school breaks, we were out of there.

How is the air during the burning season

This applies to anywhere & everywhere above & including Hua Hin.   We even get few months of bad air 100+ kms / 1.5 hours south of HH ourselves.

That's not 'IMHO' ... that's fact, and don't let anyone tell you different.

If you come from the USA or Europe, you will notice it, as air there is usually good AQI < 50, in the green, and PM2.5 acceptable.

So basicly, it sucks.

You could probably ask this of every province above Chumphon, and you'd get close to the same answer.

Why we love rainy season ...

... clean, clear air, if not raining

... cheaper hotels

... less tourist when O&A

... less congestion driving O&A

Just LOVELY 😎

Better than any place I have been to in Isaan. Hua Hint and  Pranburi and South do have the nice sea breeze you missing in Isaan when it starts getting hot and dry, and the fires starts again

We get a lovely northeast breeze funnelling through our province from Laos during the dry season so it's only the local farmers who cause any issue with smoke.  There's probably two or three 'keep the doors and windows closed' days so, overall, we're fortunate.

I have an abode in Sri Chiangmai mai which is downriver from nong khai .

it used to be the customs area across from Laos on the Mekong and was a busy place before they built the bridge at nong khai ,which left it quiet .

floating fish farms on these photos

when the river  is flooded the fish cant swim fast enough and drown

also bad pollution from a fruit canning factory dumps fruit juices in the river

i dont stay all year as it’s too boring ,it’s ok to chill
