Authorities and residents in Pattaya, have raised concerns after mysterious QR code stickers were spotted across the city. The codes were found on lampposts, public signs and building walls, particularly in busy tourist areas frequented by both Thai and international visitors.

Initial investigations indicate that the QR codes direct users to online groups sharing inappropriate content, sex aids and promoting other illegal products. Such activity may violate the Computer Crime Act and other laws relating to the public dissemination of obscene materials.

Officials have been urged to investigate the matter promptly, and authorities advise the public against scanning QR codes from unknown or suspicious sources. This is intended to prevent exposure to illegal content or online scams.

Experts note that similar online schemes have been used in other cities to exploit users and facilitate illegal trade. Digital safety specialists recommend increased public awareness campaigns and stricter monitoring of public spaces.

Local authorities are expected to remove the QR code stickers and launch public warnings. Residents and business owners continue to monitor the situation while seeking assurances that tourism safety measures will be reinforced.

What are they thinking? Sex aids, or toys?? After all, Thailand's morality is still anchored in the 50s (the 1850s that is)... 😆

Wasn't there some Russian guy arrested recently found to be putting up stockers on lampposts and walls  containing QR codes that sent people to online porn?

There is a vegetarian burger place in Chiang Rai and the owner's boyfriend did exactly the same thing promoting it.

It achieved exactly the opposite.  People were outraged at the street furniture being defaced and boycotted the place.

No... it was for illicit drugs sales as i recall. But the man was only arrested for putting up the posters with the codes. They did not have proof he was actually selling anything. Only working for someone and getting paid 1$ per poster.

In the UK there have been similar postings of QR codes.  One story I read was at car parks, where the users scanned the code, paid their parking fees into a scam account then got fined for not paying for parking.  Classic.

Yes, someone else corrected me. I don't suppose one can scan a code and determine where it is trying to send you without actually doing so?

Yes but it was drugs supposedly and the poor man said he was getting one dollar for ever sticker, sounds like you may be compromised by uploading the bar code, time to clear the Russians and their associates out of dodge no more 60 days for Russians make it hard for them to come here, but Mr Plod might disagree

Your answer is incorrect. Apparently, he did not try it, as he clearly states, ‘I think.’

I've seen one of those in Bangkok - it was very clearly labeled as offering meth and other narcotics, though of course who knows where the QR code actually led...
