UK stops pension contributions towards your pension starting Apr

Featured Replies

UK government stops payments for class 2 contributions towards your pension so now you'll have to pay class 3 while abroad £6,000 a year for one year.

Meanwhile hmrc has an 18-month 24-month backlog with application forms.

People have no chance now.  Especially people in their mid-50s and younger.

Maybe i got it wrong but looks like its.

The cost for a Class 3 National Insurance contribution is £17.45 per week for the 2024/25 tax year, which amounts to £907.40.

Has it gone up to 6,000, don't think so for next year.

But hey, i could be wrong.

He is right though it's £17.75 per week for the 2025-2026 Tax year.

Sorry but I don't understand anybody who posts stuff like this without checking it first against an "official" web site

Since when did You Tube and Tik Tok etc become the effective de facto standard....... ( same with AI generated answers.....)

He is factual. The HMRC website has two sentences.

Minimum years go up from 3 years to  10 years contribution in order to pay Voluntary contribution.

Class 2 contributions will be a polished April 2026.

Waiting time for CF83 is approximately 13 months to 26 months or longer.

The non-factual bit was the £6,000 comment.

Class 3 contributions will be around £910 per year as opposed to Class 2 at £182

The only mention of £6000 in the video is that it would have represented the total cost of funding the entire 35 years of NICs at current class 2 rates. This is an arbitrary figure anyway, given that only six back years could be paid at any one time and these costs are revised each April. There was a limited time option to fund back years to 2006/7 but that wrapped up earlier this year - anyone who managed to top up a chunk of these years at class 2 rates did very well.

The current class 3 rates of £910 a year are still a bargain, multiple times higher than immediate annuity rates. The ten years minimum contributions rule has also been in force for several years now, introduced in the Pensions Act 2014.

I paid mine at the beginning of Feb and my account still hasn't been updated. Estimated backlog at that time was 65 weeks. Some are jumping the queue though as they're close to pension age.

Where did you get the 26 months from? 🤔

From my own experience. I'm still waiting they said they'll get back to me next April. It's been already 18 months

I told a white lie with mine so I could pay online.

It went through almost instantly and is showing on my contributions record

Not sure about the accuracy of the "Waiting time for CF83 is approximately 13 months to 26 months or longer" as it differs greatly from my recent experience:

1. On 09 August 2024 I filled in Form ONLINE ('Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)') and then posted a cover letter and COPY of Form CF83 to *HMRC (PT Operations North East England). Cover letter explained i lived overseas, i had been paying NIC Class 2 and i wanted to pay my NIC Class 2 shortfall years (years outstanding and unpaid).

2. On 03 September 2024 i received a response letter from HMRC (PT Operations North East England) advising that: i could pay voluntary Class 2 NlCs, the years outstanding and how much to pay for each of those years.

3. I didn't do anything until January 2025 when i proceeded to make my payment for outstanding NIC class 2 years from my UK bank to HMRC's UK bank account. I then sent a letter to HMRC (PT Operations North East England) confirming i had made the payment, with a screenshot showing payment from my bank to their bank.

4. Received confirmation of my payment in April 2025 (actually received from DWP).

Sadly they've become the go-to 'sources' for so much more ignorance and malevolence than simple stupidity over obviously researchable pension payment levels.
