Aahh, there it is. they want to see how much revenue they made after 6 months before they decide to scrap it again or continue.

They will claim it brought in an additional 45 billion baht in revenue and will allow it to  continue under close scrutiny.

So not have to drink it up 14:00–17:00?

Correct.

Just out for regular food shopping.

For the record, I did not consume all the food I purchased immediately on leaving the store.

Effective today, Thailand has officially relaxed its alcohol sales restrictions and extended the time customers may continue drinking in venues by one additional hour. The changes follow two new announcements published in the Royal Gazette, now legally in force.

On December 3, officials confirmed that the Alcohol Control Committee has issued a revised regulation on prohibited alcohol-sale hours. The update provides a 180-day temporary allowance for sales between 2pm and 5pm, following which the policy will undergo a review.

According to the notification, signed on December 1, by Public Health Minister Phatthana Phonphat, the revised rules aim to modernise alcohol regulations and align them with changing social and economic conditions. The updates were made under the authority of the Alcohol Control Act.

New Alcohol Sale Hours

The order repeals the previous June 23 regulation and sets the following legal sales windows:

  • 11:00–14:00

  • 14:00–17:00 — temporary for 180 days from the enforcement date

  • 17:00–00:00

Provincial and Bangkok alcohol control committees will evaluate the effects of the temporary 2pm–5pm window and report to the national committee before the 180-day period ends.

Exceptions to the Ban

The sales restrictions do not apply to:

  1. International airport terminals serving outbound passengers

  2. Licensed entertainment venues operating during legally permitted hours

  3. Licensed hotels

Extended Drinking Time

A second announcement in the Royal Gazette addresses alcohol consumption. It states that customers may continue drinking for up to one hour past the start of the prohibited sales period, as long as they began drinking before the ban took effect. This applies to venues where alcohol is sold or served for commercial purposes.

This measure also takes effect immediately.

Public Health Minister Phatthana Phonphat, in his capacity as chair of the Alcohol Control Committee, signed both announcements, reported Thai Rath.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand extends alcohol sales and drinking times, effective immediately.
  • Temporary sales hours from 2pm-5pm introduced for 180 days.
  • Drinking is allowed one hour after sales prohibition begins if started earlier.

All about money and complaining bars.

Ethanol addicts are so happy.

Or sensible minds.  As your comments imply the consumption soon after purchase.  Some are at the store already and it may have their favorite beverage so they buy it for later that day or for another day.

Tourist at Lotus Big C were routinely confused as to why when doing their shopping they couldn't buy any alcohol between 2pm - 5 pm for consumption later.

It is like everything they do here, it starts off with an "idea" then anyone and everyone pitches in with their own ideas and eventually ruin everything. They try to be smart, but unfortunately, being smart does not appear to be a natural asset of most governments.

Well, I will be first in line to buy a beer at 7-11 at 2.01 PM..

That's if they have got the message, sometimes it takes time to percolate thru?

The off licence on my road has been open from 4am, seven days a week, selling alcohol for years and years.

Retail sakes srd still restricted

Nowhere in the article did it state that retail sales are still restricted.

There is no such thing as 12 am/pm it is either midnight or midday. I would hate to have my airline booking stating 12am/pm. Coud be waiting for 12 hours!

Save that bottle! So long as you have the receipt It’ll be worth a fortune in 50 years as one of the first sold under the new alcohol laws.

well, so long as it’s not repealed in 180 days

How would you know, since you posted this between 12 and 1pm, when there never were restrictions at that time.

I own a Cafe and are subject to the regs and stay abreast to be compliant. Regs clearly say the 3 venues that are no longer subject to time restrictions.  Nowhere does it list retail outlet sales are no longer restricted. This has been written a number of times in a number of media outlets. Some people don't seem to understand simple written words. Go back and read the original OP.

The article was very clear only 3 venues were exempt from time restrictions. Go back and read it.

Again reflecting much.

Those 3 venues were never part of the ban, as was stated in simple words.

keep reading the whole article as its clearly indicated only 3 venues are exempt.

  • Retail outlets (convenience stores, supermarkets, minimarts, petrol-station kiosks, market stalls, etc.) are not in the exemption categories. They must follow the retail sale time restrictions unless a specific, separate legal order explicitly changes their allowed hours.

  • Exemptions apply to a different set of places: airport passenger areas (duty-free / airside), licensed hotels (hotel bars/restaurants), licensed entertainment venues (bars/clubs with specific licences), and specially authorized events/tourist sites. Those places may legally sell/serve alcohol outside the retail time windows.

Long overdue.

The afternoon alcohol ban never made any sense.

Just another example of petty bureaucracy out of control.

I have no doubt that within the next 90 days "concerned citizens" will make "shocking" allegation that grade school children are getting drunk during their afternoon breaks and are passed out in front of 7/11s across Thailand.

Just an example of petty bureucracy finally seeing sense!

So can we now buy a couple of cans of Heineken before 11.00 am at the Loutus's store?

It's true! I just went to the local 7-eleven and there are new stickers on the booze fridge doors saying that alcohol sales are permitted from 11:00 to 00:00.

Buy shares in 7-11 stores and similar oulets. Thank goodness getting rid of these childish alcohol restrictions

What this means is that the exempted locations can sell outside the new 11am to midnight selling hours.

I think not childish, they must have had a reason at the time for implementation......

For me, not selling a beer for 'religious' or voting reasons is questionable, as many don't vote or are not 'religious'........🤗

That tactic, employing similar gambits, was used to the max during the liberalization of the weed laws a few years ago.

It didn't work then and let's hope it won't work with the ridiculous time limits on alcohol.

These nanny-state laws never do what they are intended to do - they just create problems for retailers and an inconvenience for customers.
