Urgent notice received from Wise Ltd

Featured Replies

Has anybody else received a notice from Wise either by email or which is displayed on their main account?

'We're closing your account 11 March.

You can only have one personal account with Wise.  This means we'll have to close the account you use with this email'.

I have already responded to Wise.  They informed me that this will be reviewed within the next 30 days.

This 'other' account to which they refer quoting an incomplete email address, I don't even recognise this email.  Looks like spam to me.

I did receive a notice from them 3 months ago threatening to close my account unless I could prove my right to reside in Thailand to their satisfaction within a month, but there was no mention of a specific date as in your case. This had come on top of 2 separate requests for proof of my address and ID, both of which I was able to satisfy with copies of my latest UK bank statement and passport photopage respectively.

However, proving my right to reside in Thailand was another matter altogether, since it emerged, after some to-ing and fro-ing with Wise on my part, that the only document which they would, in practice, be prepared to accept for this purpose was a Thai driving licence, which I don't have! So I proactively closed my account with them - and let them know in no uncertain terms why I was doing this.

My previous experiences with Wise had all been generally positive, but, needless to say, they went from hero to zero overnight in my eyes.

Although I have not read on here of any other incidences of Wise asking for proof of right to reside in Thailand, I believe that those who are reliant on Wise for their monthly 40k/65k transfers for marriage/retirement extension purposes need to be at least aware that what happened to me might equally happen to them (particularly if, like me, they don't have a Thai driving licence). In hindsight, I was mighty relieved that I was able to switch to the 800k bank balance method for my retirement extensions when I did (an option which, of course, is not open to every retiree)!

Login to your wise account on-line using the app or website and see if wise have sent you a notification.

Don't click on the link in your email.

Thanks for the replies but no, I didn't click on the email but the message is also displayed on their website when I log into my account as stated in my initial post.

They're informing me that they will close my current account which I have been using for several years, although I can continue to use the 'other' account which I never opened.

You would think that Wise would close this 'other' account, not my current one.

As I stated, it has to be spam.

I will keep you informed once I hear from Wise within the next 30 days.

I thought Wise wouldn't create an account for a resident of Thailand.  Is this still the case????

That has never been the case to my knowledge.

I opened an account for my missus 3 years ago and I know Thai widows who receive pensions via WISE

Still?

I have opened some years ago.

Of course I had to provide proof of address in Thailand.

A letter from pension office to my Thai address was good.

At the top of the email should be your confidential 'Communication Code'. If not, then it's very likely spam.

Is Wise available in Thailand?

AI Overview

Yes, Wise is available for use in Thailand for sending money, holding Thai Baht (THB) in a multi-currency account, and spending with the Wise card at ATMs and merchants, though residents of Thailand cannot order the physical Wise card for delivery within the country, but existing users can continue using theirs. You can easily manage money in THB, exchange funds at mid-market rates, and pay for things in Thailand with low fees, similar to a local.

So, in short words,  Yes.

Out of interest, when opening an account as a Thai resident where is the account actually held, in what country and currency?

Wise is not a bank its a money mover and doesn't operate in a specific country directly. They have partnerships in the countries with specific banks they deal with and use those partners to move money within those country's.

They do operate within thailand but are subject to a variety of banking regs imposed by their thai banking partners.

Unlucky.

I don't need a card so it is perfect for me.

'We're closing your account 11 March.

Only those who have multiple wise accounts under different email addresses will receive that email.

I did receive more than 1 of those emails, because in the past I would open a new wise account for every transfer and create an email address for that purpose.

Now I have an official account registered to my current address, and the dormant accounts get closed one by one.

You don't need a Wise account to receive money through Wise

I didn't say that you did.

You could open a Wise account as a resident of Thailand for as long as I can remember.

That being said, many people who have a choice PREFER to open their Wise account as a resident of their home country instead, in particular if Wise cards are available there. If you open a Wise account as a resident of Thailand, you won't be able to get Wise cards.

Update:

I have been in contact with their support team in SGP and they now inform me that it looks like there's been a technical error on their part but this might take longer than usual to resolve.

In the meanwhile, does anybody know another UK money transfer service that you can transfer your pensions to and then remit to Thailand, apart from Wise and Revolut (I believe you need cannot use your Thai address?).

I have used Ozforex (used to be called UKforex) since I retired here 16 years ago. I only transfer when I need to top up my (or my wife's) Thai accounts, just log on and see what rate they are quoting. Transfers are free, but they make a profit on the exchange rate. this varies a bit according to how much Thai baht you want to buy, but the rate is not extortionate compared with the mid-market rate, and I find their service very easy and reliable. Their correspondent bank in Thailand is SCB, who take about 200 baht fee per transfer. When I accept a quote I transfer the money from my UK bank immediately and (allowing for thai bank holidays) the funds are in my Kasikorn or Bangkok Bank in 24 hours, except buying on Fridays, it arrives the following Tuesday. I can't advise you about their verification procedures to open an account, when I did that I was still on the voters list as a UK resident which was sufficient for them at the time.

TorFX.

And as pointed out above, OFX (also called Ozforex).

Both have convenient Apps to download and register on without human contact.

Recently, I received the same notice from Wise. It said it was closing  the account I've been using for over a year because I have two other accounts. I informed them that I was totally unaware of any other accounts and didn't recognize them. They then told me to appeal the decision. I did! Three hours later they denied the appeal (that's the fastest reply I ever got from Wise).  I have asked Wise support (twice) how I can find out about those other accounts and close them. They did not respond. Any ideas on what I might do next? Thanks for your help. Tariya

I didn't see you post here.

I responded on your other thread.

Final update:

Having appealed against the deactivation of my account on 12 Dec, I have this early morning received and email from SGP informing me that my account has now been reactivated due to a technical error.

To help put this right they've added B3,000 to my account.
