Dual Pricing. (yes another thread on it)

Featured Replies

My younger Thai stepson who has only a Thai passport and has only ever been out of Thailand for two weeks of his life was charged farang price going onto Kho Samet because he has lighter skin. The lady at the counter was having none of it! It is racist!

  • Richard, those guys on the Days of Our Lives thread have rattled you, there's no need for your aggression or hostility. I saw that you recently posted vulgarities. 😁   I genuinely agree

I know this topic is commented on a lot. After an experience this week I decided to ask what is the highest ratio of Thai to Farang pricing that you have encountered?

A few of us visited a tourist attraction in Krabi province.  Thai entry was 30baht and Farang price 400. Thats over 13 times.

Ok let the "if you cant afford it or whatever" comments begin.

New Fee Structure for Non-U.S. Residents (Effective Jan 1, 2026)
  • Annual Pass Price: The "America the Beautiful" annual pass will increase to $250 USD for non-residents, while remaining at $80 USD for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. This pass provides entry into all national parks and federal recreational lands for 12 months.
  • Per-Visit Surcharge: At 11 of the most popular national parks, a $100 USD per-person surcharge will be added on top of the standard entrance fee for non-residents aged 16 and older who do not have the non-resident annual pass.

Post is about pricing in Thailand.

Since there is no law against doing it, there is no law re ratio.  If a higher ratio turns some foreigners away, the same higher ratio means a greater profit from the ones who enter.

If some aliens came from a rich planet with money worth 4 times as much as yours, you and everyone complaining about this would probably do dual pricing right away and think nothing of it

The post is about how evil and racist Thailand is for "dual pricing."

Dual Pricing. (yes another thread on it)

That's the thread title. No mention of Thailand.

Great example of dual pricing in the USA. Not so great for those who want to knock Thailand at every opportunity.

if you said you disagreed you would have received the same ,  stalkers are stalkers, your views are unimportant to them

50 is indeed very  impressive, and now I consider it a challenge,  I can normally  only just make double figures no matter how hard I try   Guess I'll just have to spout more common sense in future,

You’re such a fragile flower - aggression lol…

erm.. ‘vulgarities’ - oh the drama - what was it… the F-bomb - must have really upset your fragile sensitivities.

Your salary is not 10x most of the Thai’s I know (& I have a very good idea of what a rig safety guy gets).

So - that argument is flawed.

If your GF is 10x wealthier than the average Thai - should she pay 10x more at parks ? - that’s where such dumbed down arguments fall apart.

People disagree with you in the threads here you write dumb shyat….

Nothing wrong being pro-Thailand - I am too, but also see things for the way they are without unhinged pro-Thai or Pro-Foreigner bias…  Your default position is anti-foreigner which is why end up getting the negative emojis.

& on the Dual pricing - when based on nationality alone it’s discriminatory - when based on residency it’s fair.

I would say that dual pricing should not apply to resident retiree pensioners over age 60. And for other foreingers who are resident and have a tax payer card.

Well Don't Go to ANY Of Those Places !!!!!

You didn't read my post very well.  Nowhere in the post do I say I am against dual pricing.  I was remarking that dual pricing is common around the world, and not unique to Thailand.  I usually have no problem with dual pricing, here or anywhere else.   If I ever did have a problem, I would take my business elsewhere.

The Thai government approved varied price charging for patients in government hospitals in 2019 . However when it comes to national parks or entertainment venues I cannot find any legislation . So racial discrimination is accepted by the authorities . Part of the attraction of living in Thailand is the lower cost of living but that appears to be getting diluted in many areas accept of course in e.g. supermarkets , flights and buses etc . Many a Thai will try to charge a farang more than the going price . That's why I always send my lady to do the buying . All because " money number one " in Thailand . Just got to be street wise

That's a bargain.  Pay it.
USA following Thailand's lead on this.  Entrance fee to national parks will have have 2 tier pricing structure next year.
Starting January 1, 2026, foreign tourists will pay an extra $100 per person at 11 major U.S. National Parks (like Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone) on top of regular entry fees, as part of new "America-first" policies to fund park maintenance. A new $250 non-resident annual pass (America the Beautiful Pass) will be available, waiving the $100 fee, while fee-free days become exclusive to U.S. citizens/residents.

I'm Okay with dual prices on entry fees – good that prices are low or entrance free for Thais, so they can afford visit their national parks and museums – USA seems to do the same, now...

People's argument for racist pricing is that whities can afford it.

Yet, a Thai arriving in a Maserati, Porsche 911, Rolls Royce or Lamborghini still pays the Thai price.

That should not be the 'people's argument'--as it is incorrect.  I have not seen any dual pricing anywhere based solely on race, based on 'X' race being able to afford  something more than 'Y' race.  Mostly, it is based on locality, nationality, age, etc., not on someone being a rich 'whitie'.

In an earlier post I gave the example of the Louvre.  Beginning in 2026, non-EEC visitors to the Louvre will be paying a higher price than EEC visitors.  EEC visitors, of any race, driving any type of car, will get a break on the admission fee.   Nothing to do with being a 'whitie'--or any other color.  A Thai citizen gets a break on a park entrance fee, an EEC citizen gets a break on a museum entrance fee--no difference, with pricing based on nationality.

Someone will likely be along to say that they witnessed an Asian non-Thai citizen getting in to a park by paying the Thai fee.  Sure, that happens but someone gaming the system does not negate the purpose of the dual pricing.

Here's another example.  The USA is planning a visa integrity fee of $250.  Visitors from some countries will have to pay it, visitors from some countries will not.  Dual pricing, based on nationality, not on whether the visitor is a 'whitie'.  If you're lucky enough to have been born in country 'X', you get in free.  Country 'Y', you're out of luck, whether you're a 'whitie' or not, and you need to cough up the $250.   And so it goes.

Replied same as before up to the foreign visitor to decide if he wants to pay his money 💰

British dual pricing is the worlds worst.

Hotel prices for Brits,£150 a night.

Hotel prices for foreigners zero+ spending money and a free phone.

That beats Thailand hands down.

A few years ago, while in Jomtien, my son wanted to see the dolphin show, so I looked online for tickets, and was surprised to see residents with a Thai pink ID or DL get the same entrance price as Thais. That's how it should be everywhere. One price for residents and one for tourists.

It used to be like that when I first came here (12 years) but no good anymore.

Last year when on a short Thai family holiday (in a minibus) they stopped to see a waterfall. Thai price 40 baht, foreigner 400 baht. I just pulled my cap down and said "khon Thai". The driver laughed and got us all 40 baht tickets.

It was a ripoff at even 40 baht. Seen more water coming out of a bath tap. We were only there for 30 minutes.

Thankfully the US has started doing the same.  And making it harder for Thai's to get into the US.. Finally.

The more you look , the more you'll find "dual pricing" in the west. But they just call it discounts and nobody notices. I have no problem with anyone doing it. It is not racist. Local people pay local taxes and contribute to the local economy. Tourists have contributed nothing. So what's wrong with tourists paying a little more ?

Anyone calling this racist has to get off their high horse. You are a guest in another persons country. They are under no obligation to even let you in.

Some cities in the UK have introduced tourist levies on overnight stays, and some attractions offer "local resident" discounts (which amount to a similar effect).

Tourist Levies
Several UK cities have introduced a "tourist tax" or "visitor charge" that applies to visitors staying in commercial accommodation, effectively meaning non-locals pay an extra fee.
  • Manchester
: A £1 per room, per night City Visitor Charge was introduced in 2023.
  • Liverpool
: Visitors are charged 1.6% of their total accommodation costs.
  • Bournemouth
    ,
    Poole
     and
    Christchurch
: A charge of £2 per room, per night started in July 2024.
  • Edinburgh
: Scotland's first "visitor levy" will be rolled out from July 2026.

Local Resident Discounts
Some individual businesses and attractions offer specific discounts to people who can prove local residency (usually with a postcode/council tax evidence), which means others (including tourists from elsewhere in the UK or internationally) pay the full price.
  • : Free entry for residents of Roslin, while others pay.
  • Edinburgh Festivals: Special promotions (e.g., buy one get one free) are sometimes offered during certain periods for those with an Edinburgh postcode.
  • Lake District Attractions: Holders of a "Local Residents' Discount Card" for CA or LA postcodes can get significant discounts at places like the   and on
    Windermere Lake Cruise

It is annoying, because twice we arrived at Phu Thap Boek with a motorbike group, and both times there where a few stubborn among us, and didn’t want to go through the national park because they had to pay falang price, so the second time riding with a group I said thank you for the company and left them right there. That was my 3. attempt to go through that park. First time I came up there with a plan to drive through,  it was closed because of covid.

The higher park fees is  max 15 usd or so ?

Note that, under Local Residents Discount, it says "prove local residency", NOT 'prove local residency AND UK nationality'.

The opportunity to prove local residency, however it's defined, generally doesn't present itself for foreigners in Thailand.

Life not fair, get over it. I got a kid so I just smile and pay. The kid is more upset than I am.

Some attractions allow online ticket purchasing.

I have not seen dual pricing in such instance unless a foreign credit card is not accepted or Thai ID only is required.

Anyone been refused entry to a Thai attraction paid in advance online with foreign credit card?

Proving residency is a more politically correct way of doing it. But they are just being honest and open about it. They think aliens with 4 times the purchasing power of their own citizens should pay a bit more. And not get to free ride on poverty tourism.

And then the farangs get mad. I want my poverty tourism !

For me, I am fine with it either way. If they want me to pay more, I'll pay more if I want to do that activity.
