Five teenagers in Chon Buri have turned themselves in to the police after a viral video showed them dancing on buffalo statues at a roundabout. The video, posted by the Facebook page "Chon Buri Hot News Hunter," sparked widespread online criticism, branding the teens' actions as inappropriate and disrespectful to public property.

The video features three female and one male teenager dancing on buffalo statues while another teen filmed the actions. These statues were created by local students for a competition during the famous Chon Buri Buffalo Racing Festival and were later installed as decorative landmarks. Intended to attract tourists, the statues have now become a focal point of a public debate about respect for cultural symbols.

The police took swift action after the video emerged, identifying the teenagers and stating that their behaviour could harm Chon Buri’s tourist image. Officers from Mueang Chon Buri Police Station expressed concerns over the lack of respect shown toward public spaces, with further public outrage fuelled by the shared footage. One teenager’s father contacted the Facebook page to express his disapproval and assured them that the teens would be held accountable.

The teenagers reported to the police today and admitted they did not consider the impact of their actions. They offered a public apology seeking community forgiveness. Yet, some Thai netizens demanded further legal repercussions, arguing that only an apology might not suffice and emphasising the importance of respecting public property and cultural sites, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways:

  • Five teenagers apologised after dancing on buffalo statues in Chon Buri.
  • Public criticism and police intervention followed the viral video.
  • Some netizens call for legal action beyond an apology.

I'm usually of the "live and let live" camp, but this is just a little too far. Walking Street go-go's ok, not out there in public.

As i see it. They were showing their culture 100%. Thais consider buffalos to be the stupidest animals on the planet. They have such contempt for them that to call a Thai a buffalo would incite such rage that they would cause you physical harm.

These statues were created by Thai students. Their culture towards the animal was not harmed in any way.

Also, why do the police have to get involved? Unless there is a law banning you from doing such a thing out in public.

My guess any foreigner viewing this would think how happy the kids were and how much fun they were having since they did not damage the statues.

Heck, better they do this than drive around with knives and guns on the streets in Chonburi looking for rivals.

Terrible .....they should  stick to the Lao kao ,  yaba

and knife fighting

As buffalo is a synonym for stupid in Thai, dancing on the back of something stupid does seem to have a deep meaning.

Oh the outrage. :cheesy:

Ah,  just kids having harmless fun.

Now don't do it again, until next time. :giggle:

Thailand has a bombardment going on  with  its young soldiers  getting blown up and people are worried about this insignificant event?

And why are old foreign men so interested in a young girl? She is probably 15-16 years of age. The comments are cringe.

Hardly crime of the Century, maybe the BIB could find a bit more productive policing given the place is going downhill and nicking 5 kids for dancing on statues, well, next thing they will be getting jailed for offensive tweets or causing suffering or feelings of discomfort. They do that in the UK!

Their country, their culture, their rules.

I suggest the police look for the foreigners who vandalised the buffalo statues with spray paints.

Just dumb.

Should have used real buffalo.

Some of my best friends on TV are Kuai.

But, really....

It's just so very unfortunate.

We are, now, inevitably entering a brave new world in which anyone without an IQ of 3 standard deviations to the right of 100 will become fundamentally useless.

Anything less, and most work will be done by robots.

Therefore, can you blame our youth for wishing to dance on the backs of buffalo?

Even five years from today, with an IQ of 140 or below, will they not be relegated to doing even less?

We must never underestimate the power of the exponential function.

The intensity of change is increasing.

The kids dancing today will be superfluous tomorrow.

So, can you blame them for having their last fling, now...?

Striped.

Makes a difference in this case.

Nobody was hurt, except a few thin skinned snowflakes. Not sure how this is disrespectful to Thai culture. Perhaps the moves were too sexy? Would that pose a risk of tearing apart the moral fabric of society here?

Once something is placed into the public domain, all bets are off. And nobody should have taken offense. But, there is always the ANC (angry netizen crowd) to contend with these days. In my humble opinion, those people should at least make an attempt to get a life.

This is a classic nothing burger.

I totally agree and these buffalo were also created by students so lets teens having good time before affronting real life which is not always fun.

Yet, some Thai netizens demanded further legal repercussions,

No mercy from the Thai netizen committee?
