  • What a moronic idea.

  • Yet more pushing for a digital panopticon  we should all hope this idiotic idea fails totally.

  • Inconveniencing 99% of the population and 100% of tourists because they can't (or won't) tackle corrupt government workers and politicians.

Who are The Thai Pakdee Party?

A bunch of ultranationalist, far-right royalist extremists. Let's hope they don't manage to win a handful of seats and become part of the next cobbled together coalition once the winners are banned again.

I'm not defending the idea!!

In Egypt (where I have some projects) the largest banknote is 200 Egyptian Pounds or 130.64 Baht.

It generally works OK. You just have to carry around a large wedgie :whistling:

Of course the main reason is to force everyone in to using digital payment systems so The Man can see what we are up to.

In Vietnam the largest banknote is 500,000 dong, about 590 baht. And no coins in circulation, works Ok.

Get rid of the 1,000 baht note at least. And make sure that most cashless payment systems work across Thailand, not only the domestic ones.

I’m going to have to buy a bigger wallet.  Maybe a couple.

Been here 20 years and I have heard of hundreds of idiotic government proposals but this one by far is the most impractical, nonsensical, inconvenient, and I would assume universally unpopular ideas ever to be proposed. Who votes for these idiots?

My bet is that the minor wife came up with this one whilst in the throes of passion

Except the Thai 100 baht note is only worth a whopping 3 dollars not 16 dollars like the 500,000 Dong...

Bizarre. People would be walking around with fat pockets, esp changing money at the airport. Digital payment is not good enough here at the mo to go this route—no ApplePay etc. Perhaps come up with a different tack than inconvenience MOST of the populace. Axing satang coins and making 100, 500, 1000 baht notes less alike should be priority.

So are DTV holders going to be able to open bank accounts now?

Seems like they're trying to make it as difficult as possible to spend money here.

For crying out loud, even Cambodia uses the 200,000  riel, which is worth 50 dollars.....

And They want the highest note to be 100 baht in Thailand with a 3 dollar value.......This is absolutely hilarious

Starting next year, no payments exceeding €3,000 will be permitted in the Netherlands.
And purchasing cars with cash has long been prohibited there.

Everyone will be scrutinized.

The cashless society approaches.

So when you arrive at the airport from abroad and the IO asks you to see the 20,000 Baht in cash you must have with you, you'll either be able to pull out 200 hundred Baht banknotes (a wad several cm thick) or a thousand 20 Baht ones. You'll need an extra suitcase for that second option, lol.

This guy proposing this horrible idea, him and his party, have only 13,000 supporters according to CIApedia. The way the article is worded it is as though he can as a no-name just haul off and do anything he wants with Thailand. Either there is the part missing that explains how he can make declarations and have it go into effect in Thailand with very little power in the government, or this article is not accurate and just out there for the purpose of getting old foreign men's knockers in a knit. My Thai wife told me she didnt give a hoot, shes happy to go dig up crabs in the mud and to hell with money. OK...I suppose you will live but I can imagine that the ATM machines will be out of cash a lot, they will have to stock ten times the bills.

Why? USA, EU, Singapore +++ are among countries which has abandoned high nomination bills. Living here the only place I still use cash is at 7/11 and Immigration (guess why they dont use Prompt Pay) and are all for the suggestion.

what US dollar has been abandoned?
The US is about to or just stopped printing the penny, do you consider that high denomination?

there are comments about getting rid of the US $100 and $50 bill, but no formal proposals.

Is this guy for real or is this April fools day come early??

Get rid of all bank notes. Only use coins. Make 1000, 500, 100, and 20 baht coins. No need for a 50 baht coin. I can hardly wait to carry around 10 kilos of cash. Yay!

where are you living? i haven't seen a setang coin here for years

I'm living in Thailand, and the satang coins I get in my change usually come form 7-11...

and they are destined to be dropped into the silver donation bowls at the local temple.

Dumbest idea ever. I hope this is just a thought bubble from a Politician who hasn't thought it through.

So othe largest denomination note in Thailand will be worth 3 USD?

Wow, I wonder whether the current ATMs  can cope with all those 100B notes, the banks wont be happy with adjusting all their machines. I think a lame brain idea. Corruption will just work around it.

Yes.......Thailand will have just about the absolute rock bottom lowest high value bill of all the countries in the world if the 100 baht bill becomes their highest value bill....

Even lower than most African countries......

Everyone will be scrutinised.

It's probably common in Europe to not take large payments in cash due to money laundering legislation.

Dumbest idea to come down the pike--and that's saying something as there are plenty.  I use 1000 baht notes all the time in my everyday life.

How are they going to pay out the lotto. With 20s

Very bad for tourism and people will spend less as most tourists prefer cash to avoid the ripoff bank fees both in Thailand and in their homeland's banks when using foreign cards to draw cash or to pay.

My U.S. bank credit card has no foreign transaction fees and currency exchange is always fair. Rarely pay with cash as merchants checkout price is usually the same as with cash or credit.
