Anyone bought a "bonded leather" office chair?

Featured Replies

My old one was getting tired so went to Office Mate on Friday and tried a few chairs and decided on the Furradec Primo for 4750 baht, delivery tomorrow.

Didn't notice until later that in the description it said "bonded leather" which I'd never heard of, but it's apparently leather scraps mixed up with glue etc to give an appearance of real leather. The downside is that this material doesn't have much of a shelf life, 2-5 years apparently before it starts to crack, so not sure if I should cancel my order and choose another chair in just vinyl, as my current chair has lasted 10 years.

Anyone bought an office chair made from "bonded leather" and how long did it last?

Check the weight the chair can hold and make sures its higher than your body weight .

Chairs have a weight limit

No problem with weight, I'm only 84kg, it's the material I'm concerned about.

I bought a lazy Boy a few years back, which inevitably started to crack after 2 years. A big complaint to the place I bought it from, and an email to Lazy Boy in USA (even though it was Made in China) got me refunds....FROM BOTH PARTIES.

I bought one of those black nylon web models. Perfect, and cool!

Thailand isn't the greatest for refunds for faulty products, after a week, never mind 2 years.

That looks exactly like the one I bought from Office Mate about 4 years ago. I'm still using it, but the surface broke up a long time ago, and it is now covered in cloth and a towel. I wouldn't buy another one.

Correct. Warranties usually expire when you leave the shop.

Lazada and Shopee are OK most times.

I have had successful refunds from various companies over the years by carefully worded emails to the correct people.

I just rang and cancelled delivery for tomorrow. I'll go in and pick another chair.

Within the first year or two this is very likely to happen (scroll down for pics).

I bought a similar one and the same thing happened, the thin coating seems almost programmed to self destruct after a year or so. I've also seen the same model of chair in a more advanced state of decay outside a nearby condo, obviously passed on to the security guard after all the black peeled off. That said, it's comfortable, has a high weight limit, recline and gas lift are sturdy. So I've covered the seat with a cotton throw and put a nice cushion on the back.

Had identical chair, can't remember which brand it was... but got rid of it the moment it started chipping so it never got to that condition. Now using real cowhide for a while and happy with it. Only thing was the smell from the beginning...

I have a similar cheap office chair, I assume "bonded" leather. I've use it daily since prior to Covid, about 5 years at my computer desk and it has actually held up quite well, no noticeable leather deterioration. I use extra cushions both bottom and back so that probably prevents some wear but the arm-rests have held up well and they are used constantly.

I'd post pictures but I'm a bit embarrassed, I ordered the chair in beige but received pink. The GF at the time liked it so I kept it. She's gone now but not the chair.

I bought it because it felt very comfortable, unfortunately I didn't realize about the bonded leather until later, but I have cancelled the delivery and will choose another chair, non bonded.

That just says he spent too much time in the chair looking at this forum.

All this fake PU type leather will be similar, but real leather can go mouldy

I bought an office chair for my IKEA recently, it's well made, super comfortable and it was marked down to 2,000 baht which is about a fifth of what I've seen comparable chairs selling for. I believe the 300 km. delivery was about 200 baht.

Yeah, mine is several years old.... I did have to modify it by fixing a small mat to the back webbing to stop te mozzie bites.

Why anyone wants a leather chair in a hot humid climate escapes me. I got a good mesh chair with metal footings for around 3k on lazada or shopee. Wonderful.

Can't we bring back the cloth chair? I still have mine from 2008 bought in

a furniture store in Pattaya for 2500 baht! Just put a towel over the seat for

protection and away you go. The wheel frame broke a few years ago and I

bought a PVC chair at Index for 6000 baht. Piece of <deleted>. Not as wide or deep

and totally unsuited to tropical weather. I unscrewed the seat and screwed my

old, cloth chair to the new wheel frame. Still going strong.

I'm amazed that people still want leather chairs with so many alternatives now available.

To make it clear, I wasn't looking for a leather chair, just a regular vinyl one, I just happened to sit in this particular chair and it felt very comfortable.

+1 for Ikea office chairs.

I would cancel and get some real leather instead.

Yes, although I am no longer a fan of Ikea, I must admit that some of their office chairs are of good quality. I bought one there more than 10 years ago with fabric upholstery, and it is still in excellent condition.

At the time, a 10-year warranty was provided on the mechanism.

Don’t worry, just buy another when it wears out …

I think that's the same one that I have. I've had mine about 8 years. It started shedding after about 3 yrs. (I've owned it since 2019, maybe 2020). All the leather looking material is gone now. It kind of sheds. I still use the chair. It's comfortable. It looks like I'm sitting on mostly smooth canvas now.

I do, especially with a Porsche or Bentley wrapped around it!
