Trump threatens to block opening of new Michigan-Canada bridge

President Donald Trump threatened Monday to block a new bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada, citing the country’s perceived hostility toward the U.S. and its relations with China.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is expected to open in early 2026, is set to be the only bridge that allows for foot and bike traffic between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. But Trump threw the project’s fate into peril, fuming at Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration as tensions between the two countries run high.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump wrote in a Monday evening post on Truth Social.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, said "canceling this project will have serious repercussions. Higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs."

She added Trump is "punishing Michiganders for a ‌trade war he started. The only reason Canada is on the verge of a trade deal with China is because President Trump has kicked them in the teeth for a year."

Yawn.

At the end of the day, Trump will get some trade and political concessions and the bridge will open.

It will be interesting to see how the Border Patrol on each side handles bicyclists. I crossed the Southern border many times on foot. Never on a bicycle. They'd need to modify the turnstyles. But, I digress.

The Canucks would go to war before they'd let anyone dis Mr. Hockey. (aka, Mr. Elbows)

Gordie Howe was exceptionally nasty on the Ice, but he was a bit of a rat/bully sort of like a Marchand or a Linseman. Great player though.

How many of you guys remember Orland Kurtenbach. He was a tough guy.

Carney/Ford won't give concessions.

And I crossed the border from San Diego to TJ countless times on a bicycle when I worked for Qualcomm. They had a special lane for bikes going in the US direction that beat the car/pedestrian waiting times by a lot. I'll let you figure out what we were going to Tijuana for.

Did you see the new name on the Kennedy center?

The Donald J Trump and John F Kennedy memorial center. Oh how I wish it was true.

Wish what was true? Dropping the name "Kennedy" and the word "memorial".

Do you mean the friends that have been bending American companies and workers over the table for decades with lopsided trade agreements? Admittedly, with the complicity of horrible trade delegates on both sides of the aisle that want everyone to like us, no matter what it costs.

Wanting to be liked is a recipe for getting taken advantage of, in business, personal life and world politics. It's a luxury Americans with a $38T national debt and almost a $trillion annual trade deficit can't afford.

The USMCA trade deal was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on January 29, 2020.

I guess art is in the eye of the betaco'er.

Why exactly is he saying China will "terminate all ice hockey in Canada" and cancel the Stanley Cup? Er.........how? And why?

Seriously, can any of his fan club please explain what the hell he is on about this time? He's seriously lost his marbles, hasn't a clue what he's saying at least half of the time.

That is covered extensively in this thread.

I see what you did there, very clever!

How very soft !

I was hoping trump would do better then that!

Putin crossed a new bridge in a truck before invading a country,i would imagine trump

would go one better and drive a tank across the new bridge, problem is he is too fat to fit thru the

hatch.

Apparently Trump's billionaire buddy owns the old bridge this one was built to supersede and makes a lot of money on tolls and duty free and isn't happy about losing all that money. What a surprise that Trump is backing him up

Manuel "Matty" Moroun died on Monday at 93 years old. That name might not mean much to you if you're not from metro Detroit or Windsor, Canada, but around these parts, he was known mainly as the billionaire who owned, among other things, the Ambassador Bridge, which just happens to carry roughly 27 percent of all merchandise trade between Canada and the U.S.

That's $400 billion in trade a year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation with an average of $500 million in trade crossing the bridge daily. It generated $60 million in tolls for Moroun, according to the Detroit Free Press. At least 40 percent of trucking shipments into the US cross this bridge and the closest secondary crossing for big rigs is over two hours away, Forbes reports.

When I found out at work that the bridge was privately owned i was quite surprised.

Not sure how either of the governments allow it to happen but politics i guess.

Ah. Manuel Moron. Well it all makes sense now. Quelle surprise as Carney would say.

I wouldn't worry about the loss of $3 billion construction costs. Canada will save more than that by not buying F-35's and selling wheat/potash to Asia and, and....

Given the reduction in cross border trade the bridge is probably not needed now anyway.🔫👣

Incorrect. The bridge has been needed for a very long time. Ambassador Bridge needs the relief. Even with the drop in trade the amount of shipments that cross the bridge daily is staggering.

Trump is by far the biggest snowflake in the history of America, the biggest crybaby currently in America, and that includes all the 5-year-olds, and the man who whines and complains the most about his perceived enemies, and the perceived slights that are directed against him.

He is such a truly weak, pathetic and morbidly sad old man. And did I mention that he's also a terrible president and a huge failure?

I don't know about you, but I'm curious what kind of concessions he'll get.

Anyone who thinks the bridge won't open is living in Lefty Lala Land, victims of the syndrome.

There's only one way this will end. As it always does.

The usual high IQ response...

Have you ever noticed that Trump gets concessions he wants before he "chickens out"?

Maybe not all of the concessions he wants. And in the secret squirrel world of international trade and diplomacy, we'll never know what really happened behind closed doors. But he sure wins a lot of them. Then he comes out and congratulates the other side for "winning".
