It's not the case that "traditional Thai culture" is a one-dimensional, monolithic, entity, rather it is a thing of plasticity, always changing, always in flux, multi-facetted, and unfortunately, with social media now literally indoctrinating young girls with Western values I have had the misfortune of several young attractive women for whom I provided generous financial benefits telling me "We are equal, you need to do half the house work". This is literally a result of social media indoctrination, they're getting Western feminist values injected into the eyes with Tik Tok videos, so to speak.

I would also caution that we in the West are not generally burdened with responsibility for financial support for our parents, thought this is the norm for poorer Thai girls, so not all conforms to our own past lives.

Met my Thai wife in 1983 when I rented a minibus from her in Bangkok. She looked terrific and spoke pretty good English. As time went by I became aware of her great sense of humour, her honesty, and her kindness and competence in caring for animals (important to me). We married in Taiwan, where I had been posted, in 1990. I retired in 1993 and we returned to Thailand. Still very happy together in 2026. I am now 85, she is 72. Not aware that traditional values, as referred to by the poster, had much to do with this. Just two people who are good for each other.

I'm not into the tradiotional values life style with a house wife – I've never been married – but a (much) younger than me girlfriend is cool...😎

I found one and when we got a daughter, we had a live in maid and nanny to take care of the house work; another benefit you can hardly afford in a high taxed western country. I moved to Southern Thailand mainly for enjoying all year summer. I decided for an early retirement at 56 and wished to fully enjoy my life, including all the partying I might have missed before...🥳

And I don't mind to cook my own dinner and clear the dishes – I even have a machine for that, but I never use it – it's actually an easy peasy job, I don't need to be married for having that done. And if I wish help for house cleaning, someone coming doing it, might be many fold cheaper than keeping a wife for that purpose. I however still keep my girlfriend – for 22 years and counting – even she don't do traditional house wife jobs, and she don't need to, because that's not the purpose, Our deal is simple: I takes care of her now, and in return she takes care of me when I once get old....👍😉
