Are they really soldiers or more of the mysterious black-shirts who opened fire back in April.

You can begin to see a man with a gun starting from 0:28 and start shooting at 0:36. He is neither a soldier or government officer. Kind of reminds me of the photo.

Closer look and can see they probably are army but not sure why "serious" explanation is needed. They got their back to a fence (looks like Lumpini) and are facing the reds who appear to be unarmed and just spouting propaganda to them. If the photo was a wider shot we might see more soldiers and these may be the soldiers that earlier reports say were cut off and surrounded by reds. Could be something more sinister going on but I doubt it ... also might help if we had a link to the original photo that might include some text of what we are seeing.

The only difference so far is that Thaksin later said that they were fake reds.

The live pics I've just seen on thai tv (channel 7) are just insane. There's people walking through the battle area chatting on mobile phones, motorbikes pootling throug Sala Daeng intersection, farangs with camera's walking around like there on the beach right among the protesters on the front line...troops taking cover behind concrete on the Thao-Belgian overhead pass as traffic goes by behind them and underneath them, just seen the No.4 (I think) orange bus chugging by!

The CRES really need to get a grip. Reporters and civilians should not be in the area, what the hel_l are buses still doing going over the overpass? And the troops shouldn't be standing by like a bunch of lost schoolboys without a teacher while protesters put a rope around the water canon and tip it on its side.

This has farce written all over it. Totally uncoordinated.

They should close down the skytrain also. I know it's not stopping at Chitlom, Siam etc but it's too tempting a target for the Reds and it's still going right thru their area. I trust that at least someone reliable is keeping a tally of the things the Reds are destroying. Last time I checked, if you or I destroy Thai property, particularly municipal, government or military, then we get in serious trouble. Will the same rule apply to protesters? Every day we hear of things getting destroyed or trashed, and weapons getting stolen. Today, we've heard of at least 3 military vehicles destroyed and one or two fire trucks and one or more public buses trashed, ....plus private vehicles and municipal security cameras destroyed. The list goes on and on. Who will be pressed to pay for all the damage?

Then there's the damage of all the lost business in the vicinity, but that's another topic.
