Young Swede killed in tragic car accident in Rayong

RAYONG: -- On September 22, police received a report from Phutasart rescue about a car accident which resulted in death of a young Swede named Mr. Jhon Olov Eddie Viding, 25, son of the Swedish businessman who owns Grand Silver Sea House on Mae Pim beach in Rayong.

Following the report, police and rescue team arrived at the accident scene on Mae Pim – Ban Pae km21 road, highway number 3145. The body of Jhon was found in the forest wearing jeans with black t-shirt and black leather jacket, but without his head. His head was later found 10 metre away from the body.

A TATA pickup truck with a plate number บว 7766 Rayong and a white Ducati motorbike, 650cc, plate number อทษ 178, were also found at the scene of the accident. Both vehicles were damaged. Next to the pickup truck was Ms. Chanat Suwannachote, 58, a resident of Rayong.

A witness claimed he saw the motorbike reaching the five-lane curve in high speed and losing control. At the same time, the pickup truck turned up on the other side of the road causing the fetal crash. Jhon was on his way to Ban Pae to join the CBR big bike event.

These are called accidents. Given the poor state of law enforcement on roads, the stupidity of drivers (Farangs and Thais), etc, I think it would be better to call them "probabilities". Or perhaps "certainties".

In my experience incorrect.

I have seen both the Thai people and the other object of gratuitous comment....the Thai courts....to be more or less even-handed and helpful.

I might add that many times have I left things like my iPad somewhere and had people run after me to remind me, and I have never one seen a car window broken for purposes of the type of theft which is a daily occurrence back "home".

While we're at it I can NEVER remember seeing common vandalism here.

Long enough probably to know that he could have been completely sober, driving at a reasonable speed and fully in control. Next thing a car pulls out in front of him with no warning and boom, game over...

I know that road/area well have driven on it many times over the years, some of the comments here are spot on.

Yes you had better believe it, seen it many times, usually farangs on holiday who think these roads are their own personal race track, have witnessed farangs pulling wheelies on Suk Rd in Pattaya, <deleted> the lot of them.

Why not, may well serve as a warning to others thinking they are invincible on the roads, its dangerous enough on some of these roads in a car, turn round a corner and theres a buffalo in the middle of the road, or a large pot hole, just now in the rainy season large craters are appearing due to the road sinking.

Accidents: People do not pay attention to what they are doing and get what they are asking life to give them. Life operates on certainties and probabilities; never possibilities.

Sad, but stupid. This is why we get angry at people who drive like this and survive; because we know that this could happen to them and/or us. When it happens, I do not undertsand why the anger is forgotten. I am angry at this man for driving like this, whether he is dead or alive.

I simply feel more embarrassed than sympathetic for the parents and loved ones.

Agreed, i love driving my bike but know its safer in the car. I drive conservatively on the bike even though its also a 650cc. I just like the extra torque, don't care much about the top speed as I have never reached it and never will.

I am a motorcycle rider myself.

Recently I watched a YouTube video that had at least one hundred motorcycle crashes on it. (all on camera, short clips)

I estimate that maybe 90%, or more, were preventable by the motorcycle driver. MOST crashes in this video happened because of excessive speed by the driver of the motorcycle, or motorbike/scooter.

Many of the accidents that were the other person's fault could have been prevented if the motorcycle had been going with normal speed, and defensive driving.

Only small amount could not have been avoided if the motorcycle driver was completely proper.

It is so sad when anyone, especially a young person leaves this world.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. You can be the most cautious, safest, and best drive in the world, car or bike, but you can NOT control the actions of idiots on the road, Nor do you have any control over animals, little kids, or even full grown adults, suddenly darting out in front of you.

True the truck crossed the center line, but witnesses said he was going at a high rate of speed and out of control. So maybe completely avoidable if he were driving the speed limit, (or close to it) and defensively.

Motorcycle again, they should be banned or very highly regulated, and before any rider of a sewing machine on wheels pipes up in defense, coming off a 50cc can do the same bodily damage as coming off a 150cc, 250cc, 400cc or 650cc.Especially when kitted out in shorts and flip flops, which I accept the deceased was not wearing.

Looking at the picture the road does appear to have its fair share of skid marks etc. considering the report mentioned a pick up and a MC were involved, leaves me wondering if this area is a dangerous one, requiring last minute braking.

12000 motor cycle deaths a year in Thailand so thats 33 a day, so if circusman counts seeing as seeing in the news I would say he was about right.

It's definitely gruesome to contemplate the body with a severed head but we all need a dose of reality to make us realize just how dangerous speeding can be. Sanatised accident reporting is not a very good deterant to speed crazed drivers/riders. Say it how it is help prevent even more accidents.

This is Asia my friend, the attitude to life and death over here is a bit different to what you may have been used to, but it doesnt make it insensitive, just different.

Pretty much, especially in heavy population centres like Bangkok, Pattaya, etc. Previously, I used to drive here a lot with the company I work for in Thailand. On most occasions on any 1-3 three hour road trip I could guarantee having to drive 'round an accident scene involving motorcycles. Don't forget that a lot of deaths are not recorded on the stats because the rider / pillion passenger succumb to their injuries after being moved from the scene of the accident.

Anyway, like most accidents here the young Swedish kid's death is tragic and such a waste. A lot of young Westerners here get caught up in the hubris and irresponsibility of Thailand, and pay dearly for that.
