Yingluck promises post-election reform council
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra announced on TV on Saturday that the next government would set up a people's council to reform politics after the February 2 election.

Yingluck said on TV that her government had listened to suggestions of several sides expressed via several forums that Thailand needed to be reformed in social, economic and political dimensions.

But her government also needed to uphold the rule of law and the Constitution and the reform needed to be carried out by the mechanisms of parliament and government, she said.

As a result, she urged all the political parties that will contest the February 2 election are urged to sign a social contract to support the country's reform by setting up a people's council.

The council, which will be called Thailand Reform Council, must be formed only after the election and will have two-year term, she said.

Yingluck said the council would be comprised with representatives from profession groups and organizations that are legal entities, political parties, and other groups with no legal status.

She said the council would also take into account proposals of the Council of University Presidents of Thailand, meetings of permanent secretaries, other organizations and other local and national-level groups.

The council will propose mechanisms for reforming the country in the long run and will ensure that the politics will be reformed so that political officials will really represent the people.

She said she hoped that all forums would consider the government's proposal and send their suggestions to the government and hoped that the reform could begin soon after all sides agreed on the proposal of reform council.

No good, Yingluck, The Dear Leader wants POWER and Absolute Power at that, whilst the pathetic drips in the (un)Democrat Party are going to boycott the election in the hope of a re-run of 2006!

Yeah, a "reform" council called by a lady with the Thaksin name does not exactly inspire credibility! facepalm.gif

"uphold the rule of law" WHAT?????? Are you serious woman? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... I think you really need professional help. Rule of law can't even be seen (often)/understood(by most) in Thailand let alone "upheld."

Thaksin Thinks, Pheua Thai Acts. That's the only policy she cares about and has ever cared about. Don't think that it will be any different!

So 'Ms Original' has now stooped to the depths of saying she will assemble a 'people's council'... I thought she said it was illegal and outrageous to set one up.

It's one thing to blast one of Suthep's wishes, and other thing to go on and steal it for your own.

I would rather have a 'people's council' set up by Suthep and Co any day if the alternative was one set up by this bunch of corrupt retards.

Try reading carefully. The reform council will discuss ways of reforming the "social, economic and political dimensions". It is not a replacement for democratic government but a way forward for Thailand. Definitely not a clone of Sutheps nebulous "peoples council".

This would never happen.....it would just be another talk fest with no outcome.....these people can't make decisions!

These comments can be taken at face value , one cannot trust a PTP person to make a promise and keep it , the two faced nature of the double speak is deafening.bah.gif

U missed public participation and public debate.

And you didn't say that folks will not have to register before any reform forums / meetings, etc.

Sorry, bottom line is that you can't be trusted.

Your point is not valid, she didn't confirm or even mention that democracy will be a fixed tenant of the reforms.

I think the result from the reform council will be that Thaksin get his money back. Reconciliation renamed to Amnesty law renamed to political reform.....

I'm sure that Dear Leader, playing golf in Dubai, will already have made his wishes known to his sister. facepalm.gif

Please Yingluck...shut it and try to do something constructive with your country.

By the time they set this reform council up, Tarit will have half the potential members in jail.

PTP tend to do what they say they are going do and most likely will carry out reforms as they will not have any opposition with probably around 90 per cent of the vote. That will blow out what is left of the Dems for the forseeable future.

The Dems, well they dont actually do anything, all of them have already resigned from the government on the pretext of getting everything that has been given and now they don't want to contest the election, pathetic!

Now that the Democrats have boycotted the election, I wonder if this promised reform forum would have ever taken place, especially as PTP will now sweep every seat in the country. ( Surapong : " It's an absolute landslide ! " ) In any event, I am dubious. Every announcement PTP has made has shown an increasing desperation. Even Surapong has abandoned his daily Foreign Countries Delighted announcements. The only credible weight Yingluck's announcement today would have had, if her government - at any point in its two and a half year tenure - took any interest in reform at all, outside of the continued efforts to get Thaksin into the country, and their efforts to diminish the power of government ombudsman agencies, including the Supreme Court. Right from the very first day of " her " administration. So there are real reasons why people don't believe her now. They didn't believe her then.

She has very little options left now. Trying to confuse some of the public, to keep them away from the mass demonstrations tomorrow, is what she is doing with this. Thaksin underestimated Khun Suthep and his backers. Before, he had to back down, when the people came out, to get rid of his Government, for proposing the Amnesty Law. Hoping a lot of protesters would go home and the protests would dwindle, he sent his puppet sister out, to announce, there will be no Amnesty Law.

This did not work for them. Khun Suthep kept the numbers of protesters up and forced "Little Miss Noluck", to try another strategy, on her brothers behalf, calling an election.

Again, the protesters kept coming and finally, today the Democratic Party, voted unanimously, to boycott the snap election. Tomorrow, there will be huge demonstrations, so as a last effort, she announces, that she will have some sort of People's Council, AFTER the election. Of course, even if there was an election, which there probably won't be, she would either never follow through on that promise, or better yet she would stock that council with all of Thaksin's cronies and it would be business as usual.

Suthep has always been a few moves ahead of her. Dealing with Yingluck, is like trying to play chess with a toddler anyways. Her brother stands behind her and tells her all the moves to make. Thaksin is not stupid, but his hunger for absolute power, in my opinion, has clouded his judgements.

In my opinion, nothing has a chance, to change for the better, until Thaksin's influence is completely removed.

I am not saying, that the Democrats are Angels. Far from it. We live in a Country, where corruption runs deep, on all levels of society and Government. Mostly, because it has been accepted for so long, by Thai People, from all walks of life.

Suthep opened up a box, that he won't be able to close, by pointing out, that corruption is bad. He will win this fight, against the Thaksin regime (at least I hope he will), but the people of this Country, will hold their politicians more accountable from now on.

I believe, in the end, something good will come out of all this.

As far as the exchange rate goes, it goes up and down and the Thai Baht has been very strong, throughout every crisis, during the past decade (Tsunami, flooding, coup, World Financial Crisis, etc.), I have seen if fluctuate as much as 25 %, against other currencies, since the year 2000 and at this moment, it is much stronger, (after years of political uncertainty) than it was back in 2000.

We are lucky, to be living in a Country like Thailand, where our sometimes rude and mean comments, are forgotten later. In some other countries, some of the posters, including me, would already have been executed, having defamation law suits against them or ending up in jail.

Thailand is evolving, as a Nation. I for one, am glad to live here and I can live here, regardless of who is in power, after all this. A lot of our neighbors and business competitors, in our town, are Thaksin supporters, but that doesn't stop us from having a drink together or a bowl of noodle soup. Most Thai people, don't get carried away with things, like we do, here in the forums. I have never seen Thai people, screaming at each other, face to face (except for married couples and bf/gf wink.png ). They seem to be able to handle their political views much better and sometimes a lot more mature, than a lot of us, in these forums. wai.gif

"all of them have already resigned from the government"

I think you'll agree that they weren't actually in government, merely MPs in the Lower House, as part of the Opposition ? wai2.gif

Crying wolf again!

When you've spent 2,5 years telling lies, cheating and ignoring the law and any kind of opposing view, it's difficult to convince anyone you will be different.

Sure, vote for us. We'll set up a people's reform council and listen to all ideas and suggestions whistling.gif You can trust us, my brother said so wink.png

And while this all drags on for months and months and goes nowhere, then the 2.2 billion can be pushed through and exploited.

Sorry, she has proven her propensity and skill for bare faced lying time and time again.

PTP do what they say !!!!!! Brilliant. Really made me laugh out loud.

They've really stopped corruption thumbsup.gif

Yeah, Thaksin thinks and PT does. Why change a winning formula!

The only reforms they'd ever carry out would be to whitewash their crooked boss and create some sort of supreme PM role for him, whilst dismantling any checks and balance and suppressing any criticism.

No good, Yingluck, The Dear Leader wants POWER and Absolute Power at that, whilst the pathetic drips in the (un)Democrat Party are going to boycott the election in the hope of a re-run of 2006!

Whats worse absolute power or absolute monarchy ?

One more wise move of Yingluck and the PT.

The only problem is that Suthep and the Dems don't really want "reforms".

The only thing they want is to rule Thailand without having to follow democratic rules.

With or without reforms the Dems can't win an election anyway. The problem is themselves, their attitude and their sense of superiority.
