Annual rice production expected to reach 26 million tons

BANGKOK, 24 March 2014 (NNT) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Yukol Limlaemthong has expressed belief that the 2014 rice yields will total 26 million tons and hopes that the rice market will return to its normal state.

Based on the estimation of the Office of Agricultural Economics, Mr Yukol said the amount of rice to be harvested this year could be about 26 million tons, dividing into 8 million tons from off-season cultivation and 18 million tons from in-season. Of that total, 10-11 million tons will be sold domestically.

Since the government might not carry on the rice mortgage scheme, the deputy premier indicated that the sales of rice in the market should be able to return to the way they were before the scheme was implemented. He said all provincial governors had been instructed to establish a new panel, of which members would come from rice-related agencies, in order to supervise the management, production and distribution of rice in their areas.

An understanding of the market mechanism and rice price trend will be instilled among farmers while useful advice will be given by exemplary farmers whose productivity exceeds 700 kilograms per rai.

As for the agricultural zoning program, Mr Yukol reported that out of the current 70 million rai of paddy fields nationwide, 43 million rai was found to be suitable for growing rice, whereas the other 27 million was not. The latter group is being gradually turned into land for cultivating other cash crops, such as sugarcane.

Well aint that a very very quiet whisper in the corner....It would appear to be over ladies and gentleman

I wonder if that will be a promise or policy in the next election???

I guess that is as close an admission of failure as we can ever hope to see from the government. - We hope the market will be like it was before the scheme. - I bet the farmers do as well!!!

"....expressed belief that the 2014 rice yields will total 26 million tons......"

Did we miss something here? Aren't there a couple of million tons of rice from earlier harvests gracefully ageing like fine wine in hundreds of warehouses scattered throughout the Kingdom?

It's great news that 26 million tons will be harvested in 2014 but the buyers and traders from offshore will want the new crop not the more mature stock I reckon.

Perhaps some knowledgeable rice experts on here can comment on the minister's views.

If everybody keeps quiet, this little problem will go away. You know, like the cases against the red bull heir and the jet setting ex monk just to name two.

The govt sure is trying hard to get out of this failed rice buying scheme....and in typical Yinluck govt management style trying to pass the responsibility (hot potato) on to others such as the provincial governors.

So production of 26-million, less domestic-consumption of 11-million, that leaves 15-million tons for export, roughly double the current level of exports !

All ignoring 'informal imports' from Burma & Cambodia & Laos, of course.

Yay for Thaksin's Rice-Scheme ! facepalm.gif

In clear anticipation of the NACC's ruling, this is an astonishing admission, and the first tangible sign that Pheu Thai is at least privately entertaining the thought that the scheme was a disaster. So now they're hoping for how life was before the rice mortgage scheme - that is the period when the country was the world's top exporter of rice, as opposed to what Pheu Thai did with that.

I wonder where they will store it all, all the storage places must be full by now,oh right they will sell it immediately.

Can rice be used like dirt to raise the level of land? If so, the govt probably has enough rice in storage to raise all of Bangkok 5 meters. Just think of all the dirt trucks on the road hauling rice instead of dirt...at least we would have cleaner roads.

I wonder what the farmers will think of that? They weren't too pleased last year when the government tried to lower the price in fact they threatened protests.

The secret is in the mix. You want it shaken or stirred?

The government has just spent the last three years teaching the farmers that 'market mechanisms' were something they could ignore. 'Trust us', they said.

But before the Thaksin/PTP rice-scheme, there was the Dems' own more-limited price-support scheme, which there won't be this time.

So things won't "return to the way they were before", will they ?

Added to which, there's the slight problem of massive ageing/rotting government-owned unsold-stocks overhanging the market & depressing prices, another clear reason why things won't simply "return to the way they were before", as caretaker-DPM/Minister Yukol asserts (and should know better) in the OP.

Of course farmers will grow more now. They are trying to recoup money to pay their debts. What happened to any mention of the rice mountain ? despite 'sales' to China it's still there. More smoke and mirrors, and the farmers still have NOT been paid for the last lot.

Seeing as PTP has opted for the usual fix of appointing another panel to extract more money from the procedure (corruption), then nothing will happen, as is also usual.

The rice industry in this country is in the s-it, and now PTP you get to lie in it.

Nothing will fix this debacle because PTP have no interest in logical thinking.

One thing a writer stated that is very true, that with all the other scams, rorts, corruption and lack of law & order, the rice scam will be old news soon.

The farmers can return to their land poorer for the experience, those of them that are lucky & still own their land.
