A Roi Et man who was delivering a tree to Chumphon blames a shortcut advised by his GPS device for his pickup becoming stuck at a rail crossing and hit by a passenger train on Saturday morning.

Pol Captain Sayan Duprawat, deputy inspector of Chumphon’s Pathiu police station, said the accident happened at a rail crossing in Moo 10 village in Tambon Chumkho of Pathiu district.

The pickup was hit and pushed by the train along the railway lines for about 200 metres.

The pickup driver, Winyu Namprapha, 31, of Roi Et, said he was delivering a tree to a customer at Chumphon airport in Pathiu when the accident occurred.

He said he did not know the route, so he used GPS which directed him to use a shortcut. The bottom of the pickup became stuck on a concrete barrier at the rail crossing, and he was trying to lift the truck off the rail lines with a jack when he notcied the Bangkok-Yala train approaching very quickly. He jumped out of the way before his pickup was hit.

“I’m very upset. The GPS directed me and I followed it. I never imagined that this would happen,” Winyu said.

so is he saying he did not watch the street and did not see the concrete barrier?

or he saw it and thought if the GPS says he he can cross it then he can cross it

this way or that way - obviously his brain was in energy saving mode

.... of course better blaming something other than himself

The "GPS" story is not so far fetched.  It once showed me driving down the middle of a river when I was actually driving on a 4 lane highway up by River Kwai. Then in Champon area it said I was "driving off road" while again I was driving on a separated 4 lane highway.  Kept telling me to make a U-Turn and go back.  Problem was I was going in the correct direction and there was no U-Turn available.  Needless to say I got rid of that program.  Don't buy "Third Party" maps!

Maybe the tree was heavy and the pick up was riding low. Can hardly blame GPS if that was the case. GPS may have been correct for normal circumstances.

How is the tree?

I always treat the GPS as advisory, if it looks dodgy don't go that way, the  GPS will re-calculate.

So the GPS say's drive straight ahead for 500 meters... and all you could see was a pier & then the ocean ????

Most people would stop.. but then again we are in Thailand !!!!

You can't help the helpless !!

I think he know he <deleted>.... up and to avoid losing face, blame the GPS.

Lol... do you think he avoided losing face?

personally, I think he made an idiot of himself.

that old saying that "you can't make this stuff up", simply does not apply to Thais... they seem capable of coming up with the most amazing things.

Quite obvious that you had sunscreen fitted to your windscreen that wasn't compatible to GPS. It happened to me. If you have GPS you need to have compatible sun screen containing no metal which effects or compromises your GPS.

A simple Buddha Amulet would have stopped the train right before the truck.

Would normal circumstances include paying attention to what YOU are doing
