I have an account at Krung Thai and use a Krung Thai bank debit card. I had to open it there because the educational institution I work for only pays into that account. My salary is low, which may be why they long ago refused me a credit card. Today I tried to purchase a gym membership (16,000 pa) and the card failed-I guess there is a limit on it, like 10,000 per day or something; I couldn't even withdraw that amount in cash from an ATM. I'm not especially bothered about having a credit card, though it could be useful sometimes. My question is: which bank out there will offer me a better debit card with a bigger limit, or even a credit card?

Having a job at a govt. uni and a work permit doesn't count for much it seems when it comes to asking for the latter. Naturally, I understand I would need to keep the KT a/c in order to have my salary paid into it; so I might need to set up a standing transfer each month. It's all a bit of a hassle. Just want to know what TV members think is the best deal I can get and where. Thank you

That would be a very low daily limit - but indeed most accounts do have daily limits on purchase and cash withdrawals but you can normally change them.  Bangkok Bank asks when you open account and believe the low amount normally is 50k per per day but you can increase.

Is there perhaps a hold on your funds (you do have 16k or more in account)?  If you have scheduled deductions they would limit amount to cover them in the allowed limit or what you have in account.

As this is a weekend (and end of year) there might be a bank reason (accounts/computer not available) so only a small withdrawal available.  Do you get alerts of such maintenance?

No hold, v.low scheduled etc, enough funds. And no, I do not get such alerts

You could call Bangkok Call Center - expect they might be able to answer 2 111-1111 - but expect you may be able to obtain funds normally tomorrow if it can wait.  As said unless you selected a 10k amount or some such believe normal is much higher.  Wife has account there and no problem getting 50k.  Suspect there ATM's even offer more than 16k per pull (at least in Bangkok they do).

As the OP clearly stated his salary is low it is not unusual that a debit card limit of 10k was put on initially. The simplest route to go would be to ask his bank to increase the limit! And as for a credit card, unless a separate account with a sum equivalent to the credit limit can be set up the is no chance of getting a credit card.

Debit cards will soon be redundant as we all migrate to QR payment and atm withdrawals on out mobile phones.

Bangkok bank limits the amount per transaction for purchases and it's much lower that if I were to withdraw funds from an ATM. Possibly the same thing is happening with you at Krung Thai bank.

Best just to withdraw the cash and pay it,and keep your limit low

just incase someone scans your card, and cleans you out,you

don't have the same protection with a debit card as you do with

a credit card.

I hope you're wrong about the redundant debit cards, I use my phone to make and receive calls. I even ordered a 3g flip phone from Amazon so I wouldn't have to carry a telephone the size of a lunch box. I pay everything with cash which I withdraw from my account with my debit card.

I've had SCB ATM-cards for over a decade, but when they force-issued their new 'smart-card' a year-or-so ago the withdrawl-limit was cut-back to their standard-limit (I assume ?) of B20k.

This has caused me problems on-occasion, so I finally went in to get it re-set a few days ago, it took them an hour but they managed it in-the-end, took a call to Head-Office (for technical-reasons, not approval) !

I would previously have assumed that they would retain the same limit, as one's previous car, but no  ...  Amazing Thailand did it again !

I'd definitely advise the OP to simply go and talk to his bank, if he needs a higher limit.

Yes, the OP should either go and talk with his bank in person, or if his "home" branch staff isn't very English-helpful, then call their customer service center in Bangkok.  I've found the CSC for Bangkok Bank to be VERY helpful in English.  In fact, the local Bangkok Bank asst. mgr says he always hits the "English language" option when he has to call the mother ship because he gets faster service and the English-language Thai staff is smarter.  His words, not mine!

While you will definitely be able to increase your daily limit, I would think before doing it. My limit is 10,000 per day, and only once has it proven to be an inconvenience. On the other hand, ATM skimmers are rife here, and having a low limit is your only protection, since the banks are loathe to return money that has been skimmed.

Actually that are not all that common and a lower limit would require more ATM use and not protect you from skimmer in any case - only less of a loss if you noticed in time.  But Thai banks now offer chip type cards which can offer a bit of protection so along with using ATM's at banks and protecting your PIN input and making physical check of card slot the chance for such loss is quite small - I have never had it happen and normally use card to access 50k (two pulls).

Ah, you are right, I forgot about the increasing distribution of the chip cards. One thing that I do to further protect myself, even with the low limit, is used two bank accounts. Only one has an ATM card, and I keep the balance in that account below 5,000 baht. If I need to withdraw more, I simply go online and transfer the money from the non-ATM account to the ATM account, then go do the withdraw.

Put your card in your banks ATM. Go to other services. Choose increase daily limit. Confirm your identity number, usually your passport number. This works on SCB and Bangkok Bank.

As with BKK Bank and other Thai banks, if you have a savings account and online banking with them, you typically can adjust both the daily ATM withdrawal limits and the daily purchase/POS limits on your debit card -- either by calling their customer service, going to online banking or even at the ATM -- the allowed methods depending on the individual bank.

Each bank usually has a preset range of daily limit amounts that are available for its debit cards, and the daily maximums can be quite high, like up to 500,000 baht per day -- regardless of the balance in your account. (Of course, you can't withdraw or purchase more than the available funds in your account, since it's a debit card, not a credit card).

With the debit card daily limits, you can't just pick any amount, typically. You have to choose from one of the amount options they give you. And at least for POS/purchase transaction daily limits, there's often the ability to set that to ZERO, meaning to essentially disable swipe and sign purchase transactions with the card (as an anti-fraud security measure).

The debit card limits typically are available to all savings account holders regardless of their account balance or salary or other details. It's only with credit cards where one's salary may enter into whatever transaction limits are applied to that credit card account.

Get on to Krung Thai ask why.

I have a Krung Thai debit card and have used it to withdraw 50.000 baht same day.

Likewise, at first my SCB debit card was only only good for 20,000 - I went to the bank and they upped it to 50,000, one catch, I needed to bring my old passport cause that is what I opened the bank account with, even though it was expired, luckily I had it cause Thai Law says that is the only way I could have changed the account.  They also changed my account ID  to my new passport that is good for 10 years.

Now this sums it up

Can't use any more then is in account

I just found out my limit since BBK is the only card I have now Best 1 Visa (due to the incompetence of Auss banks )

Apparently it's 150,000 a day & hoping it works when I go to buy an air ticket ect

But BBK are ending all cards that only have a strip at the end of 2019 which would push you to have a Union Pay card

Looks like a bank change is coming up

Any good ones out there, I'm in Korat
