Mod shops in our little city have been cranking out 125cc motorbikes registering 125 decibels for three or four years now.
I’ve concluded Thais embarrassing easily is a myth as they appear quite proud of themselves with the excessive noise and attention they generate while clocking 40 kph.

I recall a guy complaining of a cop in Chang Mai getting in his case for modifying the exhaust. As I recall he claimed it was stock exhaust. But later it was proven to be modified.

There are no Hells Angels in North America? They tamper the exhaust just so they can pass the IDLE tests. I wonder why the laws are not changed? I wonder why the cops don't request a change! They know there is a problem. I phoned them.

Btw, what is the situation in Europe with regards to fine, removal, police checks and such?

I am encouraged by the Chiang Mai police smashing the hell out of the exhaust of one bike story! He should be rewarded!

People with loud exhausts should be heavily fined and have their bikes confiscated, end of story.

End of story?

I understand the people are upset with loud bikes and racers. And I agree drivers with real loud bikes and cars should be fined.

But how about people who are speeding with their cars? Should these cars also be confiscated? If they are 10km/h too fast or maybe 20 or 30?

And how about people who drive while they play with their smart phones? Should their cars be confiscated?

It's always easy to point a finger at others. When I was a teenager on a bike (too young to drive a car) I was always annoyed with car drivers who ignore bikers because the car drivers know that they "win" in case of an accident. I guess at that time I would have been happy if all of their cars would have been confiscated. Views change over time and it's not only the others who do something wrong.

I understand your post, you do have points, but I would certainly confiscate the cars, motorbikes of drivers caught over the limit with drinking and driving, and ban them for life, anyone who kills anyone through excessive speeding, the same applies.

Modified and noisy exhausts are to the best of my knowledge illegal, but the number seems to be growing without any check whatsoever.

I am interested to know if this is a nationwide problem, or if the cops in your area ever tackle the issue.

Not so long time ago I read in the news-feed that noise motorbikes can be fined 1,000 baht.

In the area where I live, the police could have a fine income from fines for noise motorbikes – some expats here calls the "wannabe bikes" – so seems like the problem is at least in two places.

Looking at the bright side of life, it was great last night when noisy boom-speaker-cars made a coyote get together and played loud boom-music – cannot say "boom-boom" in Thailand – next to the local police box, because we couldn't hear the wannabe-bikes...

In Taiwan (Taipei) they opened an anonymous tip line.  You call in a plate of someone spewing a large amount of exhaust or what they think is a bike that's too loud.  When you call in you get a report #.  Cops/local EPA go to the door and make them start it up and do their checks.  If they are guilty, you claim 50% of the fine by just calling in to an automated # and put in the case # and you tell them where to send your $$.  Guess what??......I haven't heard a loud bike or one spewing clouds of exhaust for years... $$ is what it takes for people to start doing things.....especially Chinese!!

It seems the Thai cops make enough money. They don't stop loud bikes, they don't stop bikes driving through red lights, don't stop cars blocking intersections, etc.. It seems they only stop from time to time bikes for not driving on the left lane or wearing no helmets. It seems the cops in this country make enough money...

From a long time ago. My friend's street legal 500 Kawi triple cylinder 2 smoke with barely muffled expansion chambers.

That had a nice ring to it. Sorry for the not so good picture.

My bike was a 250 twin 2 smoke with open expansion chambers.

Maybe noisy exhaust and youngsters go together.                                                                                                                          I see everyone's point though that it's sort of reached noise saturation here.

We holidayed at Patong (Phuket) last week and the din from noisy exhausts was deafening at times. However, the worst offenders were the larger capacity tourist rentals with modified exhausts. The tourists would endlessly goose their throttles and blast up and down the main drag in first or second gear (max revs).

Did you expect a quiet holiday in Patong?

It must be terrible to have been born old and never experienced the thrill of being young.

My old Harley has straight through drag pipes.  That would give you something to whine about. FYI I'm 62 next month.

I don't think anybody is moaning about an individual bike with a large engine , it is the idiots who drag race up and down the same road with the modified exhausts or whatever they do to make that racket.

That's just what you think. Maybe other people would have a different opinion about that ;)

I can't understand why anybody would change the stock exhaust, i prefer it silent.

And the argument "i have it so other people hear me" does not make much sense. Hardly anybody pays attention to this sound, there are just so many motorbikes with a loud exhaust.

That's the same with ambulances or police who turn on their sirens... nobody cares, because some of them like to drive around all day long with them turned on.

If you feel the need to honk or "rev" (that always looks so stupid when i see it on a vlog on youtube) on a regular basis obviously your driving sucks and you should think about how to improve yourself and your mindset on the street.

my modded pipes saved me from an accident just as i was taking over on south pattaya rd,

when the guy in front of me had a change of heart and decided to turn in the opposite side of what he was indicating.

it was far and away too late for me to decelerate, i was in fact accelerating to have it over with, but the sound of 1100 cc with modded pipes alerted him that something heavy was heading his way and about to hurt him, so he decided not to turn into my bike in that very moment

...happens papa every day...

well not the 1100cc part...

or the modded pipes...

but yea...south pattaya rd is crap-shoot...

amazed to still be living...

I don't care how old you are or about your Harley and drag pipes. I will say it again, people with loud and I mean loud exhausts should have their bikes confiscated, waking people up in the middle of the night in their houses, and hotels.

Why don't you think do people with small bikes tune them? Because likely they can't afford big bikes.

What is so much better about a big bikes with loud exhaust compared to small bikes with loud exhaust?

Yeah, I also like the sound of the big bikes more, but you can't really blame the teenagers that they can't afford the big bikes.

Once again , it is not about an individual riding a bike , it is the mentality of half a dozen of them " drag racing " up and down the road .

Many, many years ago one of the first things I did to my scooter was to fit a different exhaust. Then when i got my first car one of the fist things I did was to hammer a screwdriver through the muffler.

The difference now is population and numbers. It may be annoying buy it is just youth?

Not youth...it's selfishness. Old and young alike do it. No concern for other people. ME FIRST.

Did you ever do something when you were young just to get attention? And did you ever do something when you were young because you knew the "older people" won't like it?

I also don't like boring bikes with LOUD exhausts. But I am not soooo old that I don't remember that I did something similar when I was young.

When 'splitting slow moving and queueing traffic my preference is to follow the loud bike with a modified louder exhaust for the obvious reasons.

I most commonly drive a car in Bangkok and it is the Bike with the Modified exhaust which I hear and makes me more alert to passing bikes.

Of course, these modified bikes are Noise Pollutant, but for the smart rider it's a necessary annoyance...  for the dumb van-van kid revving his pocket rocket, it's simply a display of inconsideration and stupidity.

You can say it until you are blue in the face.....nothing will happen......get over it and save your breath and fingers.

Wear ear plugs or move somewhere more suited to your desired lifestyle. Thailand isn't going to change for you.

My IQ is more than double that....what's yours?

With such a thoughtful and well articulated and unoriginal post......I guess yours would be struggling to hit triple digits.

Keep the flames coming guys as its amusing to see people who have had zero power and influence in their lives try to actually be somebody in their world of fantasy on the internet.

Who did the reading,or are you confusing it with that from the decibel meter?

What people with ostentatiously loud exhausts imagine people think...."Look at that cool dude on his cool machine".

What they are in fact thinking...." What an attention seeking prick !"

Remember the adage "Empty vessels make most noise".
