Ten hotels connived with local authorities on fake licences in Hua Hin

Thai media has said that ten prime hotels in Hua Hin have connived with local officials to operate with fake licences.

Hua Hin district chief Rutpratheep Thamrapheephat confirmed the news at the weekend though the hotels were not named by Newtv.

They said that the provincial governor was concerned that local officials had connived in the issuing of the licences.

Official Somporn Patchimpetch, the head of an investigating committee, said that the hotels would be ordered shut from Tuesday.

If they continued to operate in violation of the order then arrests would follow.

Never mind, they can all be transferred to expenses-paid inactive hotel suites for life.

My flabber is well and truly gasted....

Only ten ????

What this goes on in Hua Hin, that city so respected by Bangkokians and many of the self righteous and delusional  expats as the pinnacle of ethical Thai business and a place far better than Pattaya !!.   Can not be true surely,  perhaps the officials have made an honest mistake and it will all go back to being a perfect place again.

Picture looks about as attractive as the infamous Pattaya trash pile !

Except the image is not of Hua Hin!

In my experience, the majority of hotels in Thailand (or businesses that fall into the category of hotels) do not have licenses. It's probably the single most difficult license to get, and there is little chance of getting a license for an existing structure if it is of a decent size.

This is because building requirements have increased over the years, so what might have been acceptable 10 years ago would not be acceptable now.

The biggest issues is car parking. If you do not have the correct ratio of parking spaces to rooms you will not get a license. This means that in Bangkok, almost any existing non hotel structure does not have enough spaces, or wide enough fire escapes, etc.

So you either build new, to code (expensive), or you simply operate without a license (cheaper option). As long as the right people are happy about the situation there is almost never a problem.

Think about all the small hotels or guest houses or hostels you see. Most of them don't have a single parking space (on road parking does not count). Almost none of these premises have a hotel license.

The truth is, if every hotel without a license was closed there wouldn't be enough left for the tourists to use. It would create chaos, so instead everyone carries on like nothing is happening.

'Arrests will follow '  if the brown envelopes are not forthcoming   .Otherwise why wait?

well , seems like thailand is not called the land of fakes without good cause then.

Perhaps we should look for that problem again when an unlicensed hotel burns down causing multiple deaths, simply because the fire escapes were not to code.

And speaking personally I find it very annoying when a hotel that advertises itself as having a car park in fact only has a tiny slot barely large enough to fit two cars in.

I'm all in favour of hotels being to code, and shutting the ones that aren't.
