How about a solar car port on a budget?

People still tell me solar isn't worth it, mainly due to the large initial outlay.

That'll be the Trump lot I expect. They have mandated the resurrection of a dead coal fired station in Colorado.

It'll cost the taxpayer millions to produce unneeded electricity.

Meantime Happy New Year to you.

  • Warning - solar panels are 'kin heavy when you have to lift them onto the roof ????   Finally, the 4 panels are in place.     Panels are fixed using plates and long screw

  • Something like this:-

  • Imagine how much power would be produced if every roof top in Thailand was covered in solar panels..they would (probably) not have to import any electric from neighbouring countries and save billions

Under 20kbht gets you an inverter and 5x 600w panels, generating 10+ units a day.

at 300 units a month worth 1,200bht, repaid in 18 months.

Not that large an initial outlay IMHO.

'Trump lot' .... really, how does he come into the 'TH Life / carport' thread. Plenty of Trump haters / lefties on AN still think solar isn't worth it, along with EVs.

Maybe in the USA, solar may take a long time for ROI, and way longer than I ever stayed in any one house. Plenty of dem & rep voters would love to have a solar system at home, I would think. If affordable in USA, but this is TH.

If a homeowner, or even renting long term, Solar is way to practical to have, in TH.

Was the price over B500000?

Sorry... I missed this question.

Our total was around 800K. Batteries were by far the biggest portion of that.

I just paid our latest PEA bill of a massive 37.09 Baht most of which was the standing charge. We do actually use about 3kWh each month to keep the meter moving, I don't want PEA to think it's broken and replace with an electronic one.

A mate recently had his MEA meter replaced because "his bill was too small", I believe he had been spinning the whizzy-disc backwards, maybe he got spotted, I don't know. Anyway he now has a shiny new digital meter and has bought more solar batteries.

I have a plan, if (more likely when) PEA replace our meter we will stop using any grid energy at all, let them think it's busted! whistling

I can't say for certain with your particular BMS, but it certainly looks like it.

Has the accuracy of the SOC figure improved??

SOC for the batteries based on real life data isn't exactly linear, but SOH is 100% and holds exactly 42 kWh.

The top 15%, from 100% to 85% are energy light.

The middle section from 85% to 23% has a nice linear energy density.

From 23% down to 16% the battery holds a lot of energy.

Below 15% it drops off pretty quick and at 10% it is fully empty.

Are you seeing something similar on your mix of batteries?

I've not forgotten this, I tried it with data from normal days and just got a straight line. Once the mob from the UK get here later this month we will have a more stressed battery pack, let's see what occurs then.

My son brought us a proper "andrew James" 3kW** kettle from the UK.

A million times better than the feeble 1.5kW ones being sold here.

Makes my tea in double quick time! (roughly 42% quicker)

Yes, it matters! I'm a Brit, we cannot survive without tea in volume!!

EDIT It's 10.30AM and I (OK, Madam) just made my 3rd 1.5L (3.2US pint) pot!

** Actually it's rated at 2,500-3,000W dependant upon the supply voltage, my trusty Kill-A-Watt device says 2,600W at our solar supply voltage of 225V.

Now. Now.

Be nice. He's got his Rolls Royce of kettles and probably very proud of it.

Wasn't it "Beat the clock with Swan brand"??

Last century we were staying in the Hilton in Seoul (projects actually had sensible budgets then).

The room kettles were dual voltage switchable 115/230V, they "worked much better" (for a few times) when set to 115V on the room supply of 230V!

For some unknown reason the hotel started supplying 230V only replacement kettles after a while. I can't imagine why!

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Here's my modern Solar kettle.

It screams like a demented old village woman when it's ready to release water.

Not being a native of the UK, that needed a lookup.

Beat the clock with Swan brand (Bulpitt & Sons Ltd) = Save time and get things done faster using Swan appliances.

Andrew James, Russell Hobbs, Swan Brand = Made in China

Your new kettle has travelled approx. 20,000 kilometers

New Concentrating Solar Tower Is Worth Its Salt with 24/7...

A California firm is converting sunlight to heat and storing it in molten salt so it can supply electricity when the wind is calm or the sun isn’t shining

I think that project went tits-up

Yeah.

The problem was probably the huge cost of building a kettle big enough for the amount of water and the crane to handle it.
