This person needs to be caught and given the death penalty.  One of these days the world is going to wake up and realize the only way to curb this kind of senseless crime is to kill the people who murder others.

And the evidence that the death penalty is a deterrent is precisely zero.  However, it's very easy to name a country with the death penalty and very high rates of murder (or, as they call it there, "homicide").

Maybe plain clothes security with concealed fire arm would be the answer?

ChipButty is correct - there is a huge army camp at Lop Buri, which is home to much of their army special forces battalion. I spent time there whilst on an exchange posting to Thailand for several years in the early nineties. It includes free-fall parachute and commando units. That weapon looks like a suppressed nine mm and yes, the Thais do have them at special forces level. To randomly shoot innocents though makes it almost sure ya-ba or similar was a factor. For those wondering about the injured foreigner - I was in Thailand in 1992 when the RTP opened fire with M16's on students protesting in BKK, killing dozens of people. One young Swede, a medical student, took two in the back as he was running away from the noise - an innocent victim, shot whilst going to an ATM. He just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was hospitalised for six weeks and was discharged in a wheel chair, partially paralysed. The hospital waved his bill. You guessed it - when his father got him to DM airport, he was FINED for a months' overstay ! He showed me his back scars several years later - the bullets had hit about a cm each side of his spine. Very lucky to survive that. Amazing Thailand - it's my bet he won't forget LOS, ever.

I have not and will not watch the video for personal reasons

I cannot imagine the grief for the 2 year olds family, out shopping, and killed.

RIP all killed.

It is just plain crazy there are no armed guards in the large malls but even crazier are the money delivery guys who also have no guns.  Considering there could be 50 million baht on board some of the money vans it's a tempting target for some criminals. I think we all know why they are unarmed.

Ok let’s have armed guards as you suggest and one day you decide to rob a gold store - who you going to shoot first ? You really want armed people in shopping malls ?

Plus given many of theses stores are within Tesco outlets I can’t see Tesco’s agreeing to guns in the fruit and veg vicinity !

No, that's too easy for him – better to let the other prisoners deal with a child-murder.

So disturbing to watch the video of the little boy walking with his mother and then fall down after being shot by the psycho

From reading on here and on the internet its been said that it is very hard for a common person to legally buy a commercially made gun here but according to the news there are people that make homemade guns here and I guess there is probably a black market for commercially made guns also. The moral of the story is if a criminal wants a gun they can get one.

If the store had several professionally trained armed guards, then this guy would be severely injured or not alive right now.

I know a foreigner who brought a gun here from a gun shop,it was so easy ,pay money wait down while grind numbers off it and brought to the car 15 minutes later ,25000 smith and weson 38

Saw the video(s). This man needs to be burned alive.

Absolutely, burned alive slowly and broadcast on tv for a deterrent

Thailand has a gun problem. They can admit it  and deal with it in a authoritian manner (the junta can see to that) or they can continue to ignore it and watch the death toll rise.

But they would need to deveop and seriously implement:

- Total control of all weapons held by police and the military (doubt that will happen)

- Install much better controls on gun permits.

- Stop police and other selling guns / second hand guns, some members will probably recall the incident a couple of years back in Pattya where an ex cop was caught selling handgunds to local teenagers, his notes revealed he had sold some 152 handguns.

The reason it’s not a deterrent is because it’s rarely used.  And when it is used it takes 10 years or more.  It needs be done as soon as someone like this is caught.

they really need to reign in the control of guns here, far too often we see people being shot or threatened with guns, many due purely to face. I had a gun waved at me when I dared to honk my horn at a car blocking the single lane road at a green light while they chatted with someone standing on the medium strip(stopped anyone from driving around them), in any other country this would solicit police action but here they dont care. The govt needs to start removing guns from these idiots and make it harder for them to get them, stop them being able to carry them outside their houses unless going  to a gun range or hunting, the thai mentality in many males is too easily upset and them having a weapon is extremely dangerous for everyone as shown by this shooter, they simply dont think

Awful just bloody awful. Catch this guy and just shoot him Say he was resisting arrest or something Who cares if he lives? there will be no enquiry  I am sure.

You mean follow the American model.  USA Number One.

The US overall is certainly safer than Thailand.

What?

Why are the parents of the shooter to blame

So if you committted fraud your parents have to pay back the money?

Ted Bundys mother was respoinsible?

You totally misunderstood that! They meant that mom and dad should be his executioners when he is caught.

R.I.P innocent souls, sympathy to their families and no words for gutless cretin that perpetrated this only that hell awaits you urgently.

A botched robbery is a horrible understatement, he was just spraying bullets everywhere.

I wish the cops well in tracking down this dirtbag and showing absolutely no mercy. People like this have no place in society.

Lots of sympathy for the victims here

The man's just a murderer plain and simple, he walks into a public shopping mall and starts shooting down innocent people, age or sex is irrelevant.. he needs to be shot dead, no prison for this man.

I do wonder sometimes why they have gold shops on almost open display in these venues?

They should be enclosed with suitable safety devices.

Not a mention of this in Bangkok Post this morning

Yes there is.

I was thinking of how many innocent times people in general spend in life being vulnerable! Example, standing at a jewelry counter and admiring whats on display

He doesn't deserve to be shot dead. He deserves die slowly in pain. I, personally, prefer he will be burned slowly at the place of the crime. That will be fair.

Heartless heinous perpetrator! Eliminating him from the Earth can’t come soon enough!

Nonsense, that did not happen at a licenced gun shop.

I read so many foolish comments about it not being easy to buy a Gun in Thailand.   Having two Cops in my Wifes family i can tell you it is pretty easy to get a Gun if you want one.    Just recently Thai Cops were issued with a new type of Hand Gun, which they have to buy themselves.  They are encouraged to buy by the Force and 'Face' also plays its usual stupid part, in that one can't be seen for long among Peers with the old types of weapon, as the deadly 'Loss of Face' comes into play.   The Force does not buy old weapons back and no questions are asked about what individuals have done with them, so imagine where they go ?   Doesn't take much imagination does it as they are up for the highest bidder; as it was put to me....''Anyone who comes up with enough cash''.

There are around 6.3 million licenced 'legal' Guns in use by the Thai Population and it is estimated that there are as many as another 10 million unlicenced in circulation and this total is only surpassed by the USA and Pakistan.   Add these weapons to the Thai mentality frailties and what could possibly go wrong ?
