Thanathorn seeks more public scrutiny of Military

Future Forward Party (FFP) leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit said that one of the structural problems in the Military is it is not open to scrutiny by members of the House of Representatives and people of the country, especially with its reputation for human rights violations such as physical assault.

 

He was speaking on Saturday (February 15) at a public event on reform in the Thai Military after the Korat shootout, which left 30 people dead and 58 injured.

 

Thanathorn said his party would like to propose inspection of the Thai Military by an independent body so that the public can know details of the Military’s income and other businesses.

 

“We cannot let them reform it by themselves,” the Future Forward leader said. “Thai people, media and politicians should be able to monitor the Army’s work and suggest guidelines for reform.”

 

Thanathorn asked the Army, which has set May 12 as the deadline to implement reforms, to stay true to its word.

Good luck with that idea but with the current head of the army describing it as 'sacred' I suspect it's a non starter with the present Govt in place.

The military has always governed in Thailand, first in the shadows always ready to intervene, now in the sunlight.
The situation is very dangerous in case the new chiefs of the armed forces decide to make a coup against the junta that governs at the moment!
So friend, calm down you wanted them, keep them!

The one who controls the Army holds the 'power ' in Thailand , as the Army can be used to take over another ( may be ' unwanted ' ) Government in the future ( FF ? ) . To be able to change this , the constitution needs to be amended first . To do this the actual  ' rulers ' need to agree , what they will not do ... it all depends on the next election ... but , as long as the army stays obedient to the usual powers , there will be a big risk of another putsch ... it has always been like this in Thailand .

A protected species with a huge budget... transparency is not on the agenda!

I would think pigs will fly first before this happens. Now with that said by Thanathorn, they will now probably go for his jugular.

Sure, but step by step.

 

I've watched this for well over 3 decades and to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) this is the first time a politician has dared to say things like "... problems in the Military is it is not open to scrutiny by members of the House of Representatives and people of the country, especially with its reputation for human rights violations such as physical assault."

 

In the last 30+ years nobody has come even close to a statement like this. And I admire Khun Thanathorn and his buddy the law dr., for their bravery.

 

It's going to be interesting how the Pm and Gen A react.

 

 

As usual, he speaks sense. A man who seems to have good ideas and ways in which Thailand can rid itself of old issues. The military being a prime example of this.

He had brought up this issue long before the tragedy in Korat. More people are listening to him now and he is playing a tune growing in popularity.

It doesn't have to be an existing so-called "independent body."

I suggest a tri-partisan (3 largest parties in NLA) to either conduct the investigation directly as a "star chamber" with subpoena power or form a selection committee to nominate citizens at-large not holding public office currently or for the last six years for appointment by the NLA as part of a Special Investigative Committee for Examining Military (SICEM). To prevent political dominance in the appointment to this investigative body by simple majority, a two-thirds vote by the NLA would be required.

The army here, is one of the single most toxic elements within society. They do hardly anything at all, for the people and for the nation. They are close to being a plague. So, whatever can be done to create some oversight, some rules, some limitations on the army is a good thing. Now, bringing any of that about is a different story. 

 

The bottom line is they need to go. They are despised by the masses. At one point in time, they had some credibility. That is not the case anymore.

I have a Thai "friend" on Facebook (she's more of a friend of a friend though) who, in the aftermath of the shooting stated without hesitation that "I'm so glad Thailand is under military rule" like...umm...first of all, your "military protectors" couldn't protect those 87 victims (including 29 dead excluding the shooter) could they? They have also failed to fully get the southern situation under control despite curfews and emergency powers. So what's the point of your appealing to authority?

Did you remind her of the incident 20+ years ago when 200 young unarmed Thai folks were shot down and killed in the Bkk Soi Aree area and their bodies quickly whisked away and have never been found and there has never been a proper investigation as to where their bodies are, mainly because nobody would dare to ask questions re this disgraceful sad event. 

 

The leader of that coup was no other than the ruthless General Sunthorn, the father of the current army chief General Apichart?

Absolutely correct. They are not a private company. There employer is the country. There super corrupt and need to be seriously accessed
