BANGKOK (Reuters) -  A 35-year-old Thai man who also had dengue fever has died from a coronavirus infection, Thailand’s first death from the COVID-19 disease, Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said on Sunday.

Thailand has recorded 42 coronavirus cases since January, with 30 of those recovering and 11 still being treated in hospitals, according to the department.

Thai health officials said the dead man had worked in the retail sector, where he had come into contact with many tourists during the early stages of the outbreak.

“This was a case of local transmission, and he was at risk because he had exposure to Chinese tourists,” Suwanchai said, speaking at a news conference.

The patient was first admitted to a private hospital for dengue fever on Jan. 27. He was later diagnosed with the coronavirus and transferred on Feb.5 to the government’s main treatment center, Suwanchai said.

He died from multiple-organ failure late on Saturday.

New measures to deal with the spread of the coronavirus - earlier introduced by Thailand’s National Committee on Communicable Diseases - came into effect on Sunday.

Health officials can now order those suspected of being infected to be quarantined and to undergo treatment. Officials can also order the closure of venues and public areas to contain the virus.

Voilà. But do not forget, it's just a flu, and it kills only very old people full of conditions [complete the list with all the BS of lalaland brigade] etc.

It seems the only “BS” is the “it kills only very old people full of conditions” made up by you.

This news report cannot be true, Ole Prayut said they had it completely under control.

So either Prayut is telling porkies or the disease control department are.

I don’t see how this news report shows that anyone “is telling porkies”.

Wow! Dengue Fewer and Corona Virus at the same time. What are the odds of that?

Especially considering there are no outbreaks in Thailand and only around 40 people infected. And of course, the whole thing is 100% under control.

Would be easier to win the lottery, I guess.

I think it was misdiagnosed as dengue fever the first day which led to the nurse getting the Corona virus. The nurse eventually recovered though lung tissue was damaged.

RIP young man.

Yes, unbelievable bad luck. Same with this case:

Woman becomes first Singaporean to be diagnosed with both dengue and coronavirus

Is it a coincidence that this has been announced now - I think not. ????

He died of a multi-organ failure after they kept him on external ventilator for weeks. Obviously they wanted to postpone the inevitable as long a they could. Out of the bag now.

Don't worry it's just the flu, recovering from the flu with permanent lung tissue damage is normal. Man up lol

Nobody said it was the flu. The Matichon article said when the patient was admitted he was misdiagnosed as having dengue fever, later they realised it was the corona virus but by that time the nurse treating him had caught the virus, (no need to protect from dengue fever). The nurse survived but with lung damage.

My post wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at all of the people who claim this situation is no worse than a case of the flu. It was an attempt at sarcasm. I've been seeing from multiple sources over the past 2-3 weeks the talk of pneumonia in people within Thailand, random TV posters referring to people they know who have it, news articles of people with it and so on. Pneumonia is no joke and especially when you see healthy young people coming down with it.
