Thailand reports 89 new coronavirus cases in highest daily jump

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported its largest daily increase in coronavirus infections on Saturday, with 89 new cases taking the national tally to 411.

Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a Public Health Ministry spokesman, said the new cases were linked to earlier infections from a boxing match, an entertainment complex and a religious gathering in neighbouring Malaysia.

Of those infected, 366 are currently being treated, while 44 have recovered.

Thailand has reported one death in the outbreak.

I'd love to interrogate the causes of death in Thailand in the last few months. Make some nice pivots tables and pretty graphs. I think lung infections and pneumonia would be quite prevalent

The holidays themselves should be deferred and people discouraged from traveling home to visit elderly relatives.

How did this spread to so many people attending this boxing event ?

all from possibly one person ?

I find that hard to believe - were they all touching each other

Many cannot.

And it does not matter many places are closed and I bet that gets extended with the rising cases.

No work or money to even afford their Soi Buakhow 2 to 3,000 b a month box.

Going home gives them a basically free place to stay and less expensive rural life.

Yep it's the standard default position for out of work Thais.

This is the main difference between the East and West

Especially in the UK, the industrial revolution pushed almost everyone from the country/agriculture into towns and cities.

Therefore the dynamics are much different

What, no mention of foreigners anywhere In the article??

are you sure this isn't a typo?

Not like the health ministry to miss an opportunity to publicly blame foreigners for their own shortcomings, is it?

could the drastic increase be related to currently being testing and before no test, only temperature check

Probably many people have it and if you see around people are always coughing somewhere.

The stats of infections are low because  many do not show symptoms that they have/spreading it and many are not being tested due to the cost.

Agree. Many daily wage earners have no choice but to return to their provinces. They cannot remain in the city with no income. No sign if the government helping them out.

The virus is nothing, the global economic crash will kill way more people. Inflation and cashless society is coming. Good luck homies

Weirdly you rarely hear a cough these days, this time of year always someone coughing, some with cold. In UK everyone thinks they have Corona rather than a bog standard cough cold hence the large number of negative tests

The boxing stadiums were open everyday right up to the 12th, there was a big show with a large crowd the day before at the other stadium and a lot of the same people would be going on the other days as well up to the 12th, socializing before and after the fights, so more than likely wasn't just one person spreading on the one night.

I hope they take actions soon, and stop all incoming traffic or things could end up very very ugly.

Man i feel sad for human mankind these days.

Race, religion or politics does not matter these days.

We're all in the same boat and need to take care of this problem worldwide.

and most  likely   has been for a longtime but  they waited for the West to get a  nice high rate  first then slowly let  out their figures.

Even if they don’t get sick or die, millions of people will lose everything unless the government gets its act together and stops banks and other lenders calling in loans when the borrowers have been thrown out of work and have zero income ... through no fault of their own.
There MUST be a moratorium until the crisis is ended and people can get back to work!

There is a large amount of people from the boxing community testing everyday, saw a report yesterday on a Thai news site that over 500 tested so far with about 70 cases out of those tests. There will be more cases from there as many are still getting tested and awaiting results.
