Famous Chiang Mai beauty spot ravaged by fire

One of the country’s most popular hiking spots has become the latest victim of wildfires that have sprung up across the North over the past few months.

Twenty rai of Doi Mon Jong mountain in Chiang Mai province was turned to ash this week as a blaze tore through its forested flank.

Firefighters posted photographs of the mountain’s charred slopes, which draw thousands of hikers from across the country each year.

A once-lush green area covering the equivalent of three football fields now forms an ugly black gash in the landscape.

Doi Mon Jong, located in Amphur Om-Goi, is among the 10 highest peaks in the country, rising 1,929 metres above sea level.

It is also home to various wildlife, including wild elephants, serow and goral, a rare goat-like antelope species.

Very sad. However I would not like to play football on those fields even when it was lush green let alone on an ugly black gash.

Calling them 'wildfires' indicates a natural occurrence!

These have been set on purpose and so it should be called 'arson.'

Still, the 'government' will do nothing, because where's the money in it for them? Disgusting & sad. Every year same, same. Next year ....... exactly the same and so it goes.

If only a wildfire would start near the governors mansion, perhaps he would finally get the message that we have a problem in Northern Thailand... This daily/yearly torture of poor AQI is beyond a joke. Thousands suffer for the benefit of a few...

I am not easily angry - but seeing this picture of man made devastation does the trick

may they burn in their own fires

Sounds like a plan. ????

The air quality in Chiangmai is just terrible can’t the governor do something about it T I T

I thought this was going to be an article about a beauty salon that had been forced to close burning down.

"An ugly black gash" I was going to say something but then refrained in-case I get suspended again!

I'm sure the devastation goes beyound what is shown in these photos. However, this section will come back greener than ever, helped by the ash left behind.

Now there's what you would call a contradiction in a headline ????

Nothing better to do than burn their own forest and their lungs of their Country. I see...A very Smart decision. ????

Wildfires? Arson, more likely.

Yes, possibly. Wait until the monsoon season starts when many "mushroom" stalls suddenly appear along the roadside offering a wide range of fungi for sale!

They mostly export them to China now, for prices worth setting fire to your country for.

The rainy season is coming. In two months one won't even be able to tell there was a fire there.

Nature is nature, it will recover now with extra carbon in the soil.
