Refused treatment in Hospital

Yesterday I had a terrible experience at the Army Hospital in Udon Thani and I need urgent advice as I am going crazy just sitting here thinking about it.OK--- 4 days ago I went to see Doctor with ear problem.He told me to take certain medication and come back on Monday (yesterday).This where the trouble started.I arrived at the Hospital at 0730 was told to come back at 0900.About 0930 I was shown in to the Doctors office(a different Doctor) and he immediately refused to come near me and I was at first confused but it would appear that he was frightened of this Covid19 problem we have in Thailand and he puts the blame on Farang !!!!!I Started to protest but was escorted out by a couple of nurses and I had to go elsewhere to get my treatment.I have been quietly fuming at home all night and dont know what to do.It has been suggested that i should just forget about it or it will end up me being in more trouble.Is that it ????

Had a young Thai Doctor fill out my insurance required physical and report.

 

First question:  Do you speak Thai?

 

Second question: Is this girl your wife?

 

Wrote me a scathing medical report sited evidence of diseases never diagnosed before...insurance denied.

 

Yes, I was clean and polite...also shocked at the doctor's report.

What I have told is the full account and as I have said I am very upset at the treatment I got.I did find with the help of a Thai friend that guy in Nong Prajak,and he flushed the wax out and all is ok

To add, do you have an overall unkempt look about you?

Messy, fat, hair unkempt, scruffy beard, stained Chang tank top and cargo shorts with a big belly?

Possibly a profile of people with with an overall appearance that do not take care of themselves and could have underlying conditions or candidates for infection.

 

In any event, Falang now lead the world by far in Covid infections.  So, the fear in the mind of some here 

may well be justified.

 

I would forget about it and move on.

I can believe it happened just like OP says, and I can also believe there might be more to the story.

 

I see it personally all the time. Thais with their masks on their chin til ole farang walks near, then up goes the mask.

Yeah, these 'out in the stick' guys are scared of being infected, and are irrational when confronted by a non-Thai seeking medical assistance. The power of media e.g. TV broadcasts, should not be underrated - focusing on infected visitors from outside Thailand as carriers. Brain-washing the population.

 

Add to that the xenophobic attitude towards foreigners, and it's inevitable that any hospital visitor  - in today's world - could be treated as a rabid interloper on Covid 19 death's door, and escorted off the premises. 

 

Happy for you that your ears were juiced out and unblocked, because you cannot change Thai behaviour,  it's ingrained in their pysche.

Well mate, you can blame that clown Anutin for your problem.

He was the one who started this nonsense about farangs being to blame for bringing the virus.

Myself usually visit the local hospital every 3 weeks, but have not been there since early february, due to the virus.

I have a nurse visiting me at home, to change my catheter, so have not had any problems regarding not treating farangs.

Hi @biplanebluey I suggest you seek out Dr. Somchit at his clinic on Phosi St. It's about 2 blocks west of Immigration on the same side near the junction with Saeng Cham Uthit Alley. (It's marked on Google Maps)

 

He is an ear specialist, speaks good English and kept my ears in great working order when I lived in Udon.

Reminds me of when I went in to hospital...

 

I had ear surgery the other week and I haven’t heard from my doctor since. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

When I was a young lad,we used to phone the hearing aid shop up,

when the receptionist picked the phone up ,and how can I help you ?

I would say cannot hear you,speak louder....until they were screaming

down the phone......funny at the time,and even now when i look back.

I had a similar experience recently but I persevered with it. My legs swelled like balloons and I was in pain and very worried about it.

 

I went to the local hospital which is about 1000 meters from my house in a district of Kalasin.

 

The first doctor was female and she was gloved up, masked up and had the face visor on. This was not done for me but for all visiting patients. She kept two metres away from me.

 

She said she believed I had a soft tissue infection that had entered through my feet. I told her I felt very ill and asked for antibiotics to be injected. She refused and gave me a prescription for oral medicine. They were useless and the infection continued.

 

I then went to a private clinic and the doctor said he believed I had DVT. This was then very worrying. He sent me back to the hospital for blood checks. He was not masked or anything.

 

This is when I met my third doctor in the ER. He was kind, understanding, young and actually comes from Roi Et, the neighboring province. He seemed clued up.

 

He said he would do the blood tests and send them to the lab as he would not go against a senior doctor, ( the clinic doctor also worked at the main hospital ).

 

However, there and then he pumped antibiotics straight into my bloodstream via intravenous injection.

 

He told me he did not believe it was DVT in his opinion. He wore a face mask only, no visor and he certainly was not afraid of inspecting my legs and feet.

 

I went home and went through aches, pains and shivers all night. The following morning, the swellings had subsided greatly. Prior to this, I could not even wear training shoes or flip flops as my feet were too swollen. It was a severe infection.

 

He then put me on daily intravenous injections for a further seven days. I am now 95% OK I think.

 

So, there you have it, three doctors, same hospital, three differing opinions.

 

If at first you don't succeed, try again.

 

I was very grateful to the doctor and sent him a bottle of good quality perfume, which went down well. I couldn't really send him a bottle of black label, could I?

 

So thank you my local hospital for your help and kindness in a bit of a distressing time.

I have empathy for the OP. Two years ago I was at the Buriram Government Hospital to see a Doctor to obtain a slip to pay for a MRI test at the Buriram Government hospital. My wife was told "only three Doctors at the Buriram Government Hospital" issue this slip.  We were patient in our wait. We both went into the Doctors exam room, as she would translate. The Doctor flat out did not want to deal with a foreigner as he did not speak English and he told my wife I should go to another hospital. I've never had the "bum's rush", but he practically pushed me off the exam stool. My wife told me that the nurse was embarrassed. That evening I found the clinic of his supervisor and found out the hours to see one of the three Doctors who issue MRI slips. On a Saturday morning I went to see this Doctor at his private clinic. He made one phone call and then he asked if I could be at the hospital in 25 minutes for the MRI.  I went to the Buriram Government Hospital with the slip, had the MRI, paid the 8100 baht and the next week went back to the Doctor's clinic. My point is I understand that one Doctor, for whatever reason, could blow off a patient and yet another Doctor in the same hospital could treat you with the highest respect. The 2nd Doctor did charge 300 baht for the visit and some pain pills when I brought in the MRI results. This before a pandemic. Yes I have Aetna health insurance, but this was an out of pocket expense at the only hospital in the province with an MRI machine.  Bangkok Hospital in Korat is my normal hospital for elective surgery. I've had tremendous medical service from Government Hospital Doctors in Khaen Dong, Satuk, and previously in Buriram. One "bad apple" in 15  years of medical treatment in Thailand.

You might have been lucky to have been turned away and to have had "flushing" (syringing?) instead of the dreaded mini vacuuming they now use instead. I had the mini vacuuming twice at the Udon military hospital several years ago now. The 1st time the doctor tried I flinched with pain so he sent me away with docusate wax softening liquid. On returning 3 or 4 days later he cleared the wax but I noticed blood on the tissue with which he cleaned the end of the mini vacuum. I asked something like 'Is that from last time?' or 'Did u do that last time?' and he said 'yes'. He shouldn't have tried the 1st time while the wax was still hard! And I swear that my hearing in that ear has never been as good since. I would never go there again with an ear problem. Ive had the vacuuming since in the UK and I really hate it. The noise and discomfort must scare children who need it to death! Its use needs to be so precise with limited vision and I reckon that one slip could cause irreversible damage to such a delicate organ as the eardrum. I much preferred the more gentle syringing and I would not be a bit surprised if internationally, after a few compensation claims, they dont return to it in the future.
