SARS-CoV-2 was detected in Barcelona sewage long before the declaration of the first COVID-19 case, indicating that the infection was present in the population before the first imported case was reported.

Interesting but the paper is not peer reviewed yet and needs plenty more rigorous testing.

It was just one sample, though, and it does not appear that the authors repeated the test at all. No replicates as far as I can tell. But also note that only 2 of the 5 RT-PCR tests were positive, i.e. on the IP2 and IP4 targets.

Now, I am not a viral gene specialist, but several SARS-CoV-2 PCR assays have been described to give false positives. Even the WHO protocol to detect the virus, which was the protocol followed by the Barcelona group, states that a positive IP2/IP4 PCR, although specific in a small panel of other viruses, should be confirmed by the “E gene assay”. That test was negative in the Barcelona sample.

Give them some time, this is just happening now.

The researchers from Barcelona University are certainly not stupid, and would not go public if they would not have good confidence in their research.

I don’t want to speculate just yet, but if this gets confirmed, this would shake up what we thought about the origins of the virus. Let’s see.

Absolutely, agree it needs time, the problem was that Reuters picked it up in its headlines without criticism and this paper still needs to be evaluated. However a remarkable find if authentic.

I wanted to post this research here 2 days ago till I read the last paragraph.

„Prof. Gertjan Medema of the KWR Water Research Institute in the Netherlands, whose team began using a coronavirus test on waste water in February, suggested the Barcelona group needs to repeat the tests to confirm it is really the SARS-CoV-2 virus.“

Sure, these PCR tests are never 100%, and some not only unreliable, but very unreliable. If you test 10000 uninfected people, you get many false positives. As it is happening now in many places.

Nevertheless, sometimes they are correct, the manufacturers usually claim 9x %. So it is more probable that it is correct than not.

That wouldn't surprise me at all, because in March/April of that year I was admitted to hospital here with pneumonia, this after getting all of the symptoms of Covid about 10 days to 2 weeks beforehand.

This was unexpected as I'm relatively fit and don't suffer from any underlying illnesses that could impact my resistance to such an ailment and I've never had pneumonia before my life!

I was put on an IV drip and given fluids and azithromycin and/or ciprofloxacin (can't remember exactly but it was one of those two or both, possibly one after the other when the symptoms didn't seem to abate).

After five days there was a little improvement, however I discharged myself from hospital as I was sick of the hospital food and also laying in the uncomfortable bed. I can't fully remember now but it was at least two or three weeks before I started to get back to 100%.

Like quite a few other people I know, I'm sure it has been around for a bit longer than December/January of late.

Having been given an infusion with azithromycin and/or ciprofloxacin for the treatment of your pneumonia means that it was not a symptom of Covid-19.

He just told you that:

A. The treatment had little effect after 5 days.

B. It happened at the beginning of 2019, when nobody had a clue about covid.

Yes, spot on lkv, and that's what I was alluding to, however I probably didn't make it clear enough.

As we know now, it is a virus, but back then it was treated as a case of bacterial pneumonia I believe, hence the IV antibiotics and saline. And I have just found the hospital report which was tucked away in one of my drawers and it says "pneumonia, fever, lung crepitation, cough and sore throat" and what I also didn't know then because I was quite poorly, was what was prescribed and it appears that both azithromycin and cefepime were given intravenously, this along with a whole host of other medications, none of which I remember at the time.

Something else which makes me think that Covid was a possibility, is the fact that about five or six days earlier I had been out and about in the party area of Patong, and was also singing with a band in a large and crowded bar, which can hold up to a hundred people or so, and is not unusual for them to approach me after my stint on stage to get selfies taken, or get hugged by overzealous and inebriated "admirers"!!!

Whatever it was, it really did knock me about and even though I wasn't feeling at all well when I discharged myself, I had had enough of the hospital food and hard bed and decided I would be best at home just sleeping because I was being given a lot of medication, some of which made me very drowsy.

I have never had a case of pneumonia my life and my lung capacity etc is good because of my many decades of playing sports, so this was very much out of the blue.

Anyway, along with a few others out there, I do believe this thing was quite possibly circulating way before it was announced in January 2020.

Maybe a coincidence, but who knows, this especially as we are only just finding out more about the background of the virus.

Thanks for the report!

It's plausible, in my humble opionion, and I have seen similar cases here in November and December 2019. Going through the antibiotics did not help much. What seemed to have helped eventually, in 2 cases, has been a few days of CDS treatment, taken as a desperate measure after about 3 weeks,  but this is no claim of a cure, it could simply be a correlation.

Appologies. Speedreading, I wrongly thought that this was about "March/April" 2020, but I now see that the poster clearly referred to 2019.

I realise that it was entirely my mistake. Already when I read a news article a few weeks ago about the alleged detection of SARS-CoV-2 in waste water in Barcelona I erroneously thought it was about an event earlier this year and I was puzzled why this should surprise anybody, as it is known that the virus is found in faeces and in fact a rectal swab is sometimes used for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for SARS-CoV-2.

I should consider it a far stretch of the imagination, though, to consider the possibility that your case of pneumonia in March/April 2019 was caused by SARS-CoV-2, given the fact that

  • there are several other human coronaviruses that are known to cause pneumonia
  • there are several types of bacterial pneumonia, not all responding favourably to the same type of antibiotics

Your points are all valid Puccini.........I just thought that I might have had it, that's all.

Don't rule anything out, we know very little about the origins or timing of this virus at the moment.

Of course it could have been a regular influenza but as they appear to have done zero testing at the time of treatment and just 'winged it' by the sounds of it we will likely never know.
