It's worth noting that Thai applicants for UK Settlement Visas have to pay a NHS Surcharge when they make their application, this fee allows full use of the NHS until they've been granted Indefinate Leave to Remain, after which there's no charge.

From October this fee is increased to £624, a tad under 24,000 Baht a year, it's a pity that Thailand don't think to do something like this, even if it was restricted to Government Hospitals.

Why not require as Cambodia is   DEPOSIT 3000$ on entry to cover Covid costs   recoverable on departure

That would not be enough, the average cost for covid treatment has run around one million baht, that is from a story a month or so ago. It would be a 30,000 dollar deposit.

'Insurance coverage for 100,000 USD'

Yet extension for annual visas only required to have 400,000 baht for inpatient coverage according to Immigration regulations? Why aren't Immigration rules not followed by CAAT who seems to require a much higher level of coverage?

Everyone here should be required to have health insurance anyway. The country shouldn't be responsible for foreigners who can't pay their medical bills.

As a foreigner I strongly believe that.

I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and have the ability to pay any medical issue and have in the past. I feel this is better than paying big money for a policy so full of exceptions that it is next to worthless.

Very difficult and it is the beginning of the end for Thailand. there should be allowances for people who are married to Thai or have children here.

Shooting oneself in the foot springs to mind.

According to a Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand notification, distributed to Air Operators, the seven groups of foreigners expected to be allowed entry from 1st July, must have appropriate insurance policies.

The regulations state that passengers must show they have medical insurance which applies in Thailand and covers anything and everything to do with covering COVID19. The minimum medical coverage in Thailand is for an amount of not less than USD100,000.

Official source anybody please? After all this is being posted as an ad...

If you cant reach "Jenny" by email try here #  867-5309.......(inside joke for fans of the 80's)..ya got, got it?

Now I know why all those planes are completely full and why Thai Airways has to fly extra sections to get all those tourists into Thailand .........

I bought a one way ticket to the US, in May, for October 19.  Looks like I underestimated how long this will drag on.  Already got stung on OA insurance last renewal.

Cambodia also requires insurance but I think it is $50,000.

I was just quoted 4000 baht (still good!) for a 3 month trip (travel insurance) and 4M baht of coverage by them. Its CHUBB insurance btw so probably cheaper to go direct to them. Not sure of policy details though.

Will CHUBB cover my cost for tummy tuck when i try to get in on medical pass?   Chubb-tummy....hey-yo!

Agreed but most already have a large amount in the bank which can be used as self insurance.

I read from Richard Barrow that it is something that some ministry (I forget which one) might take up.

I haven't read that it has happened.

Gonna need a policy to insure the 1st policy....double policy for grandpas....

Making a health insurance mandatory is a huge mistake as it triggers the inexorable, unrestrainable process of prices increasing (a lot) by the year, unless you accompany it with a series of strict parallel measures to avoid that, which nobody is really able to do, as already experienced by some Western democracies better advanced and skilled than Thailand in public administration.

Because they don't do it for you, they do it to make a sh*tload of money.

I think you will find that these single premium COVID-19 policies are simple lump sum payout: if you test positive, you get a single payment of some amount: 250,000 baht or 500,000 baht.  These policies would definitely not meet the Immigration requirements.

As a responsible person, I have 2 mil of Aetna coverage

Excuse me but where does being "a responsible person" start? At what level of coverage, based on what criteria? I am still in my '50s and always enjoyed good health. I am retired in Thailand since 2012 (Non-Imm O). Although not required by law, since 2015 I subscribed a local policy for 800,000 THB coverage ("Wealthy-Healty 4000" by Thai Health Insurance Public Company Ltd. which by the way covers Covid-19 too). Until now In 5 years I never used it. Am I being responsible or irresponsible?

Well this is a difficult one. Bypass the rapacious insurance industry issue for a moment, and ask yourself how do the Thai authorities see this themselves.

1) Everything is still under a Covid cloud, and they are justifiably scared of it starting again, this may simply be a cack handed attempt to address that issue.

2) If they are going to require this level of insurance long term then there are serious issues for many poorer falang residents here, but how much do they, or indeed can they be expected to,  care about that.

3) Why should they be interested in the over 75s or indeed over 70s, if they are aiming for the mass tourist market - come here, spend money, go home.

This is very hard on pensioners married to Thais living the quiet life in rural Thailand, who managed well in the past. Trouble is times have changed.

Reading the above post makes me think:- (Generally , not in reference to the poster)

If Thailand means cheap booze, cheap rent, cheap food, sunshine, and cheap rumty tumpty and you are over 70, then you may no longer be in the right place. Maybe time to find some other 3rd world country where you can pay peanuts to <deleted> girls 1/3 or 1/4 your age. The idea that you are making a huge positive impact on the Thai tourist earnings is misplaced. Even the ladies of Pattaya have - like you - a sell by date, and will likely end up back on the farm anyway, albeit one that is more comfortable and modern thanks to their few years of enhanced earnings.

The big issue here is how long will this insurance demand last, and can they use it as a tool for social manipulation if it makes them totally uncompetitive with any other country in the market.

So does this only apply to foreigners entering by air or by land crossings also?

Since the land borders aren't reopening on 1st July, it's a moot point. However, I think it is safe to assume that once these current insurance requirements have been tried and tested on foreigners entering by air, they will be rolled out to cover those eventually coming in overland as well. Doing anything otherwise would negate the purpose of the whole concept, no?
