PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, July 6 (TNA) – Coconut growers insisted that no monkeys were abused to pick coconuts and concerned parties saw it two years ago.

Pongsak Butrak, chair of a network of organic coconut growers in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, responded to the reports that supermarkets in Britain would ban some Thai coconut products for fear of monkeys being abused to pick up coconuts in Thailand.

He said that there were over 2,000 rai of organic coconut plantations in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Their yields were processed into coconut milk that was popular in the European Union.

The British should take care of their own monkey???? business instead of worrying about how the Thais get their nuts down.

At least the monkeys have something that many people in the UK don't have.....

a job.

h8 2 say it. 1 of these guys using monkeys to farm coconuts decided to let his monkeys out on my property to destroy our banana plantation cuz hes a racist jealous pig. my german shephards fixed it???? We trapped the remaining monkeys and drove 80km away and let them go. Clearly this farmer didnt care about the monkey's!!

How about the elephants and specifically baby elephants treatments? The documentary i recently saw online was more then alarming.

Obviously ms Symonds has to much time on her hands now she is entrenched with BJ, with her Nanny, Cook, Dog walker, i guess they were watching discovery channel and saw a monkey up a tree put 2and 2 together and BJ suggested a way she could get world recognition, 50.000 deaths, borrowings that generations will have to suffer and the PMs girlfriend takes centre stage with this excrement.

Perhaps the UK consumer should make the choice, picked by monkey at price a, or not picked by monkey at price b, ir not buy any coconut products.

worgeordie makes a very valid point about employment in the UK, i would like to think the PMs live in girlfriend would focus on more pressing issues and not side track her boyfriends thoughts with coconut talk.

If Symond cared about animals , get Boris to stop halal  slaughter, the most horrific way to kill an animal

After the local Toyota dealer let me drive off the company's workshop with the not brakes working, I do believe that there are some monkies working in Thailand

If only people go and have a good look at how monkeys work before they say anything.

Monkeys in Thailand know they don't have a labour union. They monkeys are not so stupid yes they do know they work for peanuts that's why they are rather reluctant to do their job.

The monkeys when they get to the top of coconut trees will sit around for a while and do the usual monkey antics looking left and right, examine some insects or whatever, then they slowly start to do work.

In fact very few Thais use monkeys to pluck coconuts because it is not very efficient method of getting those coconuts down from the trees.

The guy who come to buy coconuts from the coconut plantation owner wants to buy a huge amount they are not interested in the 50 or 100 coconuts the monkeys threw down from the trees.

The monkeys will twist and turn and pull the coconuts off the tree and then threw it down. How long does that take? You need to watch the video and you know you are not going to make much money at the rate it is going.

Can these monkeys supply the demand of factory making the coconut milk(the white color milk not the coconut water that you drink once you cut a hole in it).

The factory buy thousands of coconuts to make coconut milk which they pack in plastic bottles or paper cartons that you buy in supermarket.

Can monkeys really supply those thousands of coconuts require by these factories? No way.

So tourists are mistaken, they immediately think monkeys are being used like slaves and ill treated. This is not the real picture, in fact the owner take good care of the monkey and shower it with lots of love. There is a working relation between the monkey and the owner. It takes a long time to train the monkey to go up the tree to pick coconuts.

There are not so many around these days simply because it doesn't make much money. It all boils down to maths.

"You pay peanuts you get monkey services"

Seems the people in prachuap faiped to see the point being made for the monkeys hardship. I didn't read they were being abused by owners. I read the abuse was using them for manual labor. So basically this article confirms they are being used as manual labor being fed bananas and nuts hence, being abused

So, if abuse is just using animals as manual labour, then using dogs as guide dogs, watch dogs, sledge pulling dogs etc. is all abuse. And what about horses?
