A scene of utter devastation greeted Tha Luang police and rescue personnel after two pick-ups collided at a crossroads in Lopburi, central Thailand, on Sunday.

The accident happened at the Ta Cha intersection, a crossroads without lights in Nong Phak Wen sub-district.

Bunmee, 64, the driver of a Nissan pick-up was dead at the scene.

The severely injured bodies of a many men, women and children were scattered all about the undergrowth next to the road. Some were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be cut out.

In total 13 injured people were ferried to two area hospitals.

They were travelling in an Isuzu pick-up and had just made merit in a Thot Kathin ceremony at a nearby temple and were on their way to a waterfall to continue their day out.

Inevitable daily occurrence in Thailand where all pick-up drivers think they are Lewis Hamilton.  The upside is that's two less of those dambed things on the road this morning, they are a constant menace everywhere !

The unfortunate thing is, that many drivers are totally oblivious to what else is on the road or around them...and people still sit in the back of these vehicles.

Another tragic day on Thai roads

can these events still be considered tragic though ? it's known already how to drastically reduce most of these events from ever happening.

It's sad that the government are more bothered about spending hundreds of billions of baht on new submarines than they are about using some of that money to investigate and improve Thailands dismal road safety.

Pick-Ups again. Thais drive them like the car companies advertise them, fast, furious doing the impossible. Car companies should take a lot of responsibility for road deaths in Thailand.

Surely their is something wrong with the design of these vehicles??

Easy answer to that being that pockets can be lined with the kickbacks/graft from buying new submarines and suchlike, whereas, why spend money improving road safety when there is nothing in it for the powers that be.

nothing wrong with the design.

pickups are designed to carry stuff in the bed.....NOT a dozen unsecured idiots.

a crossroads without lights

Right of way? Too much of challenge for most drivers here.

I don't think it needs warp speed if both collided on the intersection without breaking.

Also another example that those pickups are no sturdy tanks.

Some people live with a false feeling of security.

A Google translate from CH7 article.

Quote

When the driver arrives at the scene of the accident, it is 4 separate lights without signal. While driving through the intersection at speed Another pickup truck was also driven at speed and no one would slow or stop. The cars therefore collide strongly in the middle of the intersection. Causing such injuries and death

Sounds that the challenge was even worse. Lights dark/out of order?

And as I understood, both race through the intersection without any slowing down.

They all think they are alone on the road and the road is theirs

I have mention that for many years, and believe me, it will never change.

RIP same old story with no cares by the government

It is not long time ago the government wanted to ban it, again.

But guess who was against it??

Protest, after protest I remember, and sometimes in this country, the government listen to their population.

The submarines were cancelled weeks ago.

Might I surmise that speed was involved due to the degree of damage to the trucks?

Speed and quite a few in the back tray a recipe for disaster, time for the ministry to ban riding in the back and this time stick to it and no flip-flops.

Nothing wrong with the trucks, I have had one for 12 years I still have a D-MAX It should be driven accordingly to what it is designed for and not like a sports car,
