For snowbirds like me it is the weather. This year it will also be for some semblance of normality away from virus, mandatory mask wearing etc. I'm hoping to arrive on the new STV friday.

It seems lately that 50% or more of my friends living elsewhere have mentioned 'thinking' of moving here... I don't expect many will... but reasons are basically not being happy where they are be it virus or politics in their home country...

Well at the moment it's a safe haven from the pandemic. So naturally it's very hard to get in now. Go figure.

Agreed, why would any want to?  So many other better options.

Sitting here stuck in England, facing a few months of darkness, cold & wet weather, working from home doing a job I hate, zero night time activity or any chance of interaction with the opposite sex. Aside from all that I'm a nature geek and miss being in the tropics.

I'm 51 now and in 4 years I should be in a position to make the move permanently. Yes, it's not the Thailand I knew 20 years ago. But the pros still far outweigh the cons for me.

There aren't too many other countries where one can do that safely in the face of a pandemic.

Why on earth one will ask silly questions like this? why people leave anywhere around the world? when you answer this you will understand why people live, go and come back to Thailand.. capisci?

Personally I could come now , back the wife and child, I could jump through the hoops and do the expensive quarantine at a push, but its just unreasonable in the current climate. If Thailand hits a 2nd wave (yeah I know), then returning now could just be an expensive waste of time as I need go back to the uK every 9 months for personal reasons.

I don't mind admitting it, although I am a bit past it now. My Thai GF is enough. And lets face it, any shopping mall here has far more eye candy behind and in front of the counters than most Western countries. Much lower lard##s count.

My friends are the same. A couple already have condos here but not made the move yet.

Reasons? As you say plus women and weather.

Because they want to for many reasons.

Where I live we had no local infection for 6 months and 20 days

no wearing masks every thing is open.

I have a friend in the UK who is thinking about living here when he retires in two years. Or should I say was thinking about  it. When I told him about the Medical Insurance he started to have second thoughts.I told him that I pay 144,000 Baht a year (I'm 73).

He said perhaps he will come over for the peak season instead.

I have free medical care where I live, no problems with visas, climate is OK

saying that I still come to Thailand for holidays twice a year but at the moment

I can't as you know.

If you are starting fresh there are better places. If you are over 50 and already have some connections here it's still better than the west, currently. The economic turbulence should create some more opps too.

Everything is open? Your border is open? You are Aussie.

Since we are talking about the country of Thailand let’s compare to the country of Australia. Businesses are still closed down in Australia. I can jump in a car and drive to any province I want. You can’t.

if you want to compare states/provinces ok, Phangnga hasn’t had a single death and under 10 cases, much better than whatever state you are from.

I live in Thailand for the lifestyle that I couldn’t have in Australia. Thailand is the best all round country in the world for me, if there was better I would move there. Most of my Aussie friends are openly envious of my lifestyle.

Thai food is world famous, and delicious. Don’t think I will ever eat a meat pie ever again. Mystery meat, eye balls and other balls.
The beefy Aussie shielas love scoffing them down though. With chips and a Diet Coke and Bundy.

Thailand isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer living in a high tax nanny state, “PC”, and living off welfare. They can’t handle Thailand, it is too much for them and they complain a lot, even when they are not even in Thailand.
Which is another reason I like it here, there are not many anally retentive Thais or Karens. Sabai sabai, Mai bpen rai, jai yen yen.
Suits me. I love it here.

Paying a million bucks to live in a three bedroom, one bathroom  100 year old weatherboard shack doesn’t appeal to me either. With $1500 council rates.

i will go for a swim now. I won’t freeze to death. Gotta love the water temperature in the tropics.

Life is good.

2 br 2 bathroom condo 10th floor on the beach for 360 dollars a month  , I’m from San Francisco

Its a free "Benny Hill" show everyday... Thats why.. Its actually quite funny.. Cause unbelievable things happen every minute.. Life in thailand is more strange than fiction.. The reality is much more crazy.
