Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin will ask Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting to approve a budget of Bt1.5 billion to hire 18,000 labourers in six Andaman provinces.

Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting will be asked to approve a Bt1.5-billion budget to hire 18,000 labourers in six Andaman provinces, said Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin.

The move is aimed at mitigating the severe impact of Covid-19 on the region’s tourism sector.

The Labour and Interior ministries will operate jointly to recruit the labourers to work on public projects. The funding will come from the existing Bt400-billion economic revival budget.

Of the 18,000 jobs, 8,000 will be created in Phuket, with 2,000 in each of the five other Andaman provinces. Workers will be hired for 10 months on a daily wage of Bt330-340.

Suchart has also instructed the ministry to consider extending the cut in social insurance contributions by employees and employers. The rate cut from 5 per cent to 2 per cent is due to expire at the end of this month.

Create jobs is not enough if there are not enough customers for many businesses ... need to create customers first .

How many Thais want to do labouring jobs at 330 baht per day? Not many and that's why most labouring jobs are mainly done by migrants from Myanmar.

Wired to do what? Sitting around and drinking beer all day?

Good, but more more is needed, not only labourers' jobs, training opportunities will be needed as well, as most of the tourism jobs won't come back in the near future.

330-340 baht not here in Thailand, only migrant workers would take that.

Even the Thai service industry personnel can earn that plus a zero in a day.

1.5 Million would be closer me thinks.

There is plenty of Trash that needs picking up, recycling and disposing of correctly.

Rain Gullies that need clearing Etc

Staff to do this hardly need intensive Training, or have high Skill levels, so should be easy to find, and the end result would benefit the whole Area..

Working for 3 changs a day in that heat?, employ less and raise the rate, or employ more and raise the rate, need those pesky tourists to contribute.

Of which 1500 baht actually reach someone without work. The trough has been overflowing lately.

If there's no fish alive in the world anymore, what could be the reason to borrow 1.5k from dad to finance a new aquarium? It's all pointless you f(deleted) s(deleted) m(deleted)ns if you don't let tourists f(deleted) enter you country you (deleted) (deleted) (deleted) (deleted) (deleted) !!!!!!!!!!

Then why you let Panasonic leave Thailand for Vietnam? 1000 jobs down the drain and NOT tourism

Jobs in crisis hit tourist provinces, yeah right. You can fool most of the people most of the time but come on, what do you really want the money for?
