An American man who stole a gun from a shooting range in Pattaya and later opened fire on police during a several hour long siege has been found dead, police have said.

The dramatic incident unfolded on Monday evening when the 25 year old man stole a Glock 9mm handgun and eight bullets from a shooting range in the Huay Yai area of the city.

The man then fled to a condo in central Pattaya where he began to open fire at police, who returned fire at around 12:15am. A Channel 3 journalist suffered minor injuries in the crossfire.

The man reportedly barricaded himself in his 4th floor condo after refusing to drop his weapon or negotiate with police.

The siege continued for several hours with the man refusing to surrender. Police evacuated residents from the condo and closed nearby roads.

At 3am officers from Pattaya and Huay Yai Police, Tourist Police and a Special Operations (SWAT) unit entered the suspect’s room.

Inside, they found the man’s body who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A full investigation into the incident has been launched.

Police said they understand the man had a history of mental illness and drug addiction.

8 rounds. 6 for the Police, 1 for the Journalist and 1 for himself. Real mental case.

There is a lot of information in the original article that cannot be found here. Google Translate will help.

Why am i not surprised that this gun crime was committed by an American. Anyway must be a mental case combined with brought up in a  culture that adores guns. Not sure what he thought he could do with 8 bullets.

How is it B.S. when the US is the country with the a huge gun problem. Also on this board you will always have Americans moan on how to get guns. So yea I think my assessment was pretty accurate. Yes of course there are also anti gun Americans.  However you can't deny the gun culture in the US and the different mentality from the rest of the civilized on guns.

Well that livened the place up

Looking at that bottom photo of the 4, their seems as many guys in the corridor as there was on the balcony of the Iranian Embassy siege.

Stories to be told for years to come.........

The news reports says the reporter was hit by a ricochet from a round fired by the American, not the police.
"The officers then surrounded the area and ordered the gun to be placed But the man did not listen. Instead, fired a gun at the officer. The bullets ricocheted to the ground, hit the left foot, Mr. Tiwakorn Kritsmanee, 31, Assistant Reporter, TV Channel 3 in Pattaya."
(Google translate sucks.)

It also says he was found dead in the bed and the bloodstains were already drying. It was estimated he'd been dead for perhaps 2 hours before the police entered the condo.
"When pushing back the door of the room found that The perpetrator shot himself in the head with a weapon and died in the bed. Blood stains began to dry. Expected to have died at least 2 hours in the room..."
(Yeah I know. Some of you instantly decided that the police did it like you usually do.)

And no, gun ranges don't ask for background criminal records checks or certificates of physical and mental well being before renting weapons to customers. However, some years ago they supposedly stopped renting to "farangs" that showed up alone (as too many of them were going to the ranges and only firing a single shot it seems).

25 years old. Could be a lot of reasons why he did it. Drugs, money (lack thereof), relationship breakup.

Note the report also says "it is expected" that "illness" or drug addiction or stress may be the cause. But they won't know until they do a history check and autopsy. I seriously doubt they already had any kind of "history" on the guy and would have been able to pull it so quickly after identifying him. This only happened a few hours ago (the police were notified at 00:15 this morning apparently, so just over 8 hours ago).

(Keep in mind that when translating anything from one language to another, a lot can be "lost in translation". Automatic translations often lose context and/or meaning as they usually can't differentiate words than have multiple uses.)

Obviously clairvoyance is a quality somewhat lacking in the ranges staff.

You watch too much TV bro.  There's violence in every country, Thailand too.  It's just you're allowed to have guns in America.  I guess if he had a knife that makes it better?

what was the mental illness and what drugs are we talking about?

he could still teach in Thailand, no problem.

yea, you could have kids at a school and he could have been your teacher.

they check for YaBa....but i think that's it.  no mental check, nothing.
