Phetchabun brake failure: Three tourists in "miracle' escape after pick-up plunges 200 meters down ravine

Sanook said that three Thai tourists had a miracle escape cheating death after their pick-up suffered brake failure and plunged 200 meters down a ravine near a scenic viewpoint at the holiday resort of Phu Thap Boek in Phetchabun in north eastern Thailand on Monday evening.

Sawang Monkhol Satthatham rescue foundation and locals working in dark and misty conditions had a difficult job to help three occupants who were trapped in a  Ford pick-up.

But they were stunned to see that two were only slightly injured and one refused hospital treatment altogether.

There were two male and one female tourists from Nakhon Pathom. Two were taken to Lom Kao Crown Prince Hospital.

Sanook understood that the tourists had been descending a hill when their vehicle had a problem with its brakes. It hit a resort room demolishing a toilet before continuing down the ravine.

Actually this might be a real case of brake failure! Mark it up. That road is very steep in many places if coming from LomKao. Then again fifty fifty they got going to fast and brakes would not help at that point.

They're lucky to be alive

Amazing Thailand, DUI, Speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road ok, and now they have invented "resort room encroachment".

This was on the news yesterday.
Banana trees cushioned the impact and the driver was good enough to keep a straight line so it didn’t flip or roll.
Well done.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Failing to apply the brakes does not constitute brake failure.

In the advent of brakes over-heating because of excessive use on downhill stretches there are alternatives, but as that's not covered during the scant driving test no-one seems to know what to do except brake more and hang-on when nothing happens.

On the contrary, I'd wager. Nobody here cares for their brakes, so nobody will send anything to be repaired, until it is too late, else there won't be so many cases of 'brake failure' ????

Hmmmm, new-ish Ford with brake failure, I knew it wouldn't have been a Toyota truck with brake failure......Have to remember this.....

Brake failure here just means oily flip flops slipped of the pedal.

They shouldn't fit brakes to cars here . They just give drivers a false sense of security.  An anchor and chain thrown out the window would be just as much use.

This is a very steep and windy road that has two sides, one low one high.If anything fails a competent driver would turn to the high side and run into the bank. Maybe the driver did not want to damage his car.

They need to stop talking brake failure on Thai made cars or that be another industry moved to Vietnam. If so many brake failures are true with we know is bs would make manufacturers libel to group legal claims.

The  problem is that Thai drivers will not change to a low gear when goig down long and steep slopes.  Using a lower gear would use more petrol (gas) !

I doubt it. The drivers wait until their brakes fail then it's too late to go to a repair shop. They visit the morgue.

It's always a good idea to hit the restroom before trekking in the jungle.

Then you go out of business, because no one cares about breaks here. A useless thing. ????
