Thai tourism: PM promises to bring "new dimension and long lasting effects" to Phuket, spokesman

A spokesman for the Thai prime minister offered a glowing assessment of Prayut Chan-ocha's vision for the future of Thai tourism in Phuket.

Anucha Buraphachaisri was speaking as the PM prepared for the mobile cabinet visit to the southern Thai island that has seen its tourism industry devastated by the pandemic.

There were plenty of buzzwords about the PM's vision according to Anucha. He mentioned a "new dimension", "long lasting changes" and adjustments so that any future problems could be mitigated.

The PM was particularly keen to promote the island as a hub of medical tourism, sports events and large seminars.

He plans to meet tourism leaders , listen to people's problems, gauge opinion on the ground and understand all points of view without favoring one side or the other, said his spokesman.

The media also reported that he would be armed with a 13 point plan as part of his visit.

Thaivisa notes that the visit of the PM will be seen as a watershed moment after several months of foot dragging, re-positioning and argument about the opening up of Thailand to foreign tourists.

This is especially true of Phuket where the term "Phuket Model was coined a long time back but where no foreign tourists have yet arrived.

Whether the PM's visit hurries this process along remains to be seen, however. So far the only special tourist visa arrivals have been less than two hundred Chinese in Bangkok.

Looks like somebody has overdone the dosage on Anutin's cannabis oil to come out with such a brash statement....

The truth is, there is no serious plans, to bring back the tourist.

What we have seen until now is useless: STV no tourists like that, wrist gps no tourist like this, to be treated like dogs no tourist like that. All these tourist plans we have seen until now will only keep the tourists away, good work if you want to run down the tourist industry.

In other words to help big business and do nothing for the small business owners.

Let's see the rest of the 13 point plan. Unlucky for some?

Just another of this Cretins 'Promises'; none of which he ever fulfills !

Did he   happen to have lovely  new  clothes  despite being  stark naked  also?

When it is realised that that tourists previously enjoyed places like Phuket for the open spaces, not over crowding, for the outdoor peace and quiet, not over run by traffic and fumes, for the local cuisine, not western hotel buffets, for the relaxed local population not those pressured by economic survival, then they may be able to recreate something which has been casually discarded  and replaced by corporate profit. Years ago Phuket was a beautiful relaxing place, a pleasure to visit, now I wouldn't bother

The tourist will come soon ,but they are still waiting for the Cheap Chinese wrist bands!

Open all international airports without restrictions but testing prior and upon landing.

All the rest is utter male cow poo.

Listen Mr. PM the only 'new dimension' you are going to see is the one predicted by General Relativity...in this case touritational collapse...black hole.

If I read this correct then the PM does not want tourists !

Medical hub, seminars .... I think this is the real plan.

It would be in line with agenda 2030 from the UN which does not want mass tourism anymore due to climate change issues !!!

Seem the PM is a pawn of the UN and WHO as all his actions clearly show !!!

Long lasting changes it will be - just not what the people think it will be.

A Chinese Special Economic Zone with hotels, casinos and condo blocks (cf: Sihanoukville, Cambodia)????

Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk, Cambodia. 15th Feb, 2019. Construction sites for Chinese resorts and casinos rise over downtown Sihanoukville. There are about 80 Chinese casinos and resort hotels open in Sihanoukville and dozens

Went to phuket the first time in 81, Rawai was busier than Patong. The last time I went in 93. Could not believe my eyes. Even for free I don't see why I should go back there, perfect example about how tourism can destroy.

They had the chance to start from zero again after the tsunami and correct their mistakes. They chose not to do that.

Phuket overpriced itself from the Thai domestic market years ago.

I first went there in 84. You are right Patong really kicked on in the early 80s.

If you are not worried about money/prices it Is very nice. If you are a budget traveller it is ordinary.

Since you were there last tens of millions of tourists have enjoyed it, spending billions, employing hundreds of thousands and making many Phuket people multi millionaires. Phuket is a huge success story for many, especially land owners.
It is the richest province in Thailand and also has the highest minimum wage.

There were improvements after the tsunami. I agree it was better with less people, but I can not complain as I was one of those people crowding it up over the last five decades including yesterday when Prayuts motorcade was going through.

Parts of it has been ruined but most of it is still a naturally beautiful place.

Probably more than 10 years ago, there was an English company who setup shop here doing some kind of IT business, for various reasons they shut up shop and left for Malaysia

The Hero-General doesn’t know who is WHO....and U and N are just a coupe more of those confusing English letters.

He doesn’t need to try and think (which always makes his head hurt)….he takes his orders directly from Supreme Headquarters in Beijing.....and the Chinese have 'long-lasting' plans for their 'new dimension' of Phuket.

Much easier to just do what the bosses say.....and Mr. Xi always knows best.

You are probably right, there still must be some nice places around but Phuket is not my cup tea. Went to Kho Samui instead in 86, probably will not like that also now, 34 years later.
