All six Thai women who sneaked in from Myanmar test positive for Covid-19

At a press briefing held by the Public Health Ministry on Covid-19 outbreak, Dr Sophon Iamsirithaworn from the Department of Disease Control, said six additional cases were detected among people who sneaked into Thailand via Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

 

A 28-year-old Phayao resident who went to work at the 1G1 entertainment venue in Myanmar’s Tachilek district in early November, illegally entered the country on November 27 with a Myanmar national. A motorbike picked her up at the border to deliver her at Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai bus terminal at 3pm, where she takes a taxi to the Big C department store near her home in Phayao at 6pm.

 

She goes out again on November 28 at 9pm to grab dinner, wearing a mask at all times.

 

On November 29, her boyfriend accompanies her to an outdoor Singha beer garden. They park their car at 8pm and seat themselves, but do not go near the stage. They then return home at 11pm, before heading downtown and checking in at Hop Inn at 4am. Later the same day they drive to Chiang Mai.

 

On November 30 at 5pm, the woman goes to a private hospital in Chiang Mai to be tested for Covid-19.

 

They then decide to return to Phayao the same night and she is admitted into Phayao Hospital. Results from the private hospital in Chiang Mai on December 1 confirm she is infected, as does a test conducted in Phayao Hospital the same day.

 

A 21-year-old Thai woman sneaks into Thailand on November 28.

 

A 25-year-old Thai woman enters Thailand on November 28 with the 21-year-old above. After arriving in Don Mueang Airport on the same day, she takes a flight to Phichit to stay with another friend. They go out to dinner at Bird Bar in Phichit with another three friends. None of them wear masks.

 

Between November 29 and 30, this woman dines at both Bird Bar and Crocodile pub.

 

She is caught on December 1 after her friend in Bangkok tests positive and is taken to a local state quarantine facility, where she too tests positive.

 

A 36-year-old Thai woman who had been in Myanmar since November 3 and had visited the 1G1 entertainment venue between November 23 and 24 develops Covid-19 symptoms on November 26. She treats her cough, runny nose and body ache with over-the-counter drugs, and is helped by a Myanmar national to sneak into Thailand via a natural border in Chiang Mai on November 29.

 

She then goes to Chiang Mai airport in a friend’s car, wearing a mask at all times, and takes a Thai Lion Air flight at 10.40am to land in Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at midday on the same day.

 

She then takes a taxi to Mo Chit Bus Terminal, where she takes a van to Big C department store in Ratchaburi. She then heads to a private hospital after learning from a friend in Myanmar that someone from her group of friends had been infected. She is then transferred to the state hospital in Ratchaburi and confirmed to be positive on December 2.

 

• Two women, aged 23 and 35, who reportedly worked in Myanmar’s Tachilek district with a woman who had sneaked into Chiang Mai on November 24, tested positive but are asymptomatic. The duo had entered Thailand illegally via Chiang Mai and headed home to Mae Sot district in Tak province on November 26. They decided to go in for a test after learning their friend was infected.

 

After learning of the above cases, the Public Health Ministry has called on people to stop sneaking into the country like this because the government provides free quarantine facilities as well as food. People entering the country illegally are encouraged to report for a test.

 

The ministry has confirmed that there are no local transmissions, but believes measures need to be in place to curb the risk.

Sheesh. No problem disappearing anti-government activists. Or charging schoolchildren with 'protesting'. But people illegally entering the country, who know they are infected, Meh. Kindly stop doing that.

 

Finally, they've got to identify these people by name with photos (mask temporarily removed) to aid those who may have crossed paths with them.

I'm looking on the bright side - a) the border is likely to be better policed in future, b) the way these women are being pilloried will make others think twice before doing the same, c) even allowing for others who were asymptomatic (so never went to the doctor, so never got picked up) the number of infectious people who've recently come across the border is probably small compared to the number that came in by air last December / January. Thailand was still able to keep a pretty good lid on it last time round, and that was from a standing start. This time they're better prepared, so I don't think it's hopeless. Things could go south of course but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Just my luck for Thailand to basically ban travel from the UK for fear of spreading the virus from a European 'hotspot', only at the end of the virus in Europe to get a travel ban to Thailand due to outbreaks there and not wanting to re-import it !

Given the proven propensity of Thai authorities to make a hash of the simplest of tasks, it is a wonder that so many people have accepted uncritically the narrative promoted by the government that Thailand is somehow particularly efficient in suppressing COVID-19.

All the others that came across were smart enough not to go to hospital knowing they might get in trouble.  COVID is everywhere and it only kills very few.

All the sugar and salt that Thais eat is way more dangerous but that’s not sensational for CNN

I agree, and I've been worried about the porous border all year, I'm scratching my head as to why this hasn't become an issue sooner. What alarms me is the cold weather is here now, although humidity is still on the high side. In any case, what handful of domestic customers are booked at our Chang Rai hotel this month from OTAs like Agoda started cancelling, so even if there are not yet any recorded local transmissions, public perception of the situation is making a bad situation even worse for businesses like ours. We are however refusing to refund those that are beyond their cancellation window as government policy has not changed and there are no recorded local transmissions.

 

About these skanks that got caught, I'd personally take pleasure in seeing them publicly ######ed and ######ed up (my obfuscations)

It hasn't become an issue sooner because they have been lying from the very start. Which should surprise not a single person. 

 

The Thais had the foresight to know that performing extensive testing and reporting of cases would ultimately hurt their tourism dependent economy. 

 

So, they do almost no testing. And thus report almost no cases. Meanwhile, Thailand is the THE #1 DESTINATION FOR CHINESE FROM WUHAN and was one of the few countries in the world who kept allowing Chinese in during the early peaks of the virus in Wuhan. 

 

Yet, so many farang and other people around the world are daft enough to believe that Thailand somehow found unique success among thr world at combating the virus. 

 

So the summary is that Thais rely on people being gullible and fairly stupid, too, in many cases.

This just goes to show how 'porous' the border really is, this has probably been going on for the whole year while us idiot farang have been jumping through hoops, sitting in quarantine paying for overly expensive hotels and forced to eat <deleted> food.

 

Alll the while the locals and god knows who else, are coming and going as they please visiting nightclubs, resturants and carrying on as normal!

 

Say what you like about Thaksin, but he would have had army snippers set up on the borders shooting these people on the spot!

   So, Thailand under reported Covid cases and did no testing in order to save their tourism industry ?

  That doesnt stand up to scrutiny , considering Thailand closed its borders and hasnt allowed any tourists in for ten months now .

   You seem quite joyous that Thailand now has infections again , if there had previously been cover-ups, why didnt they cover this incident(s) up ?

They should throw the book at them, followed by the bookcase. It's incredibly serious because they could be responsible for thousands catching the virus. What if some die from it, will they then be charged? Knowing the Thais, there'll be lots of claims for compensation from those who caught it through contact with these women.
