COVID-19 alert in Rayong province as gambling cluster infections increase to 85

Rayong-COVID19.jpg

Forty-eight more people in Thailand’s eastern province of Rayong have been confirmed to be infected with COVID-19, raising the number of gambling cluster infections to 85 so far. The province is not yet locked down, according to a joint announcement by Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutacha, Governor Charna Lamsaeng and provincial health chief Dr. Sunthorn Rienpoomkarnkit in a hastily held press conference this afternoon (Sunday).

Governor Charna said, however, that some risk areas have been temporarily closed but people can still move in and out of the province because the outbreak is confined to the Muang district.

He added that the provincial administration is considering opening a field hospital as a precautionary measure, to accommodate more cases.

The sensible thing IMO would be to lockdown for two weeks immediately, stop what could be an unstoppable spread with the NEw Year travel, and then reassess.

Nip it in the bud now, most people have a week off for NY, so perfect time to do it economically (except for the already hurting tourism businesses) and give them an extra week off under lockdown.

Once infection numbers get to a certain level it will be impossible to eliminate it and we will just be playing catch up and an ongoing saga like in Europe and the Americas,

Rayong finds 49 more Covid-19 cases, many linked to gambling den

The governor of Rayong said 49 additional cases of Covid-19 were found in the province, taking the total to 85.

He said many of the new cases were linked to a gambling den. He said the province was considering opening a field hospital to accommodate the increasing number of patients.

Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha said at the press conference that Rayong needs more "strong medicine", asking people at risk to take a test for free. Temporarily Covid-19 checkpoints are set up at Noen Urai Flea Market with 400 tests offered per day.

Rayong governor Charnna Iamsaeng said that the numbers were expected to increase due to proactive testing. The timeline of patients is set to be published soon.

In the future, Rayong may have to set up a field hospital to accommodate the growing number of patients, he said.

“Rayong has not locked down. People can travel in and out normally, without quarantine. "Tourist attractions are still open because the infected people live in Muang district, while no cases have been found in other districts,” the governor said.

Rayong provincial public health office chief Sunthorn Rheanpumikankit said that at the moment they are accelerating the timeline data of everyone. They have prepared all three hospitals -- Rayong Hospital, Klaeng Hospital, and Map Ta Phut Hospital -- for treatment.

At the moment, the symptoms of the patients are not severe, the governor said.

Ummm...you know the answer to that! 5555

What were they playing?  Chinese roulette. One infected person sits in a room and you take your chance.

What happened to the Thai hookers who stared spreading it. All gone a bit quiet about them. Luckily they have found someone else to take the blame as usual. How do they know it wasn't someone associated with one of the hookers who started all this

PM you need to get a hold because the buck will stop with you.

finally somebody introduce PM...

he stopped 1 thousand of mafias in this country ....for sure, not all, difficult with police and local obotop and obodjo...

now , he is a little  weak...............................

rayong is a very high place border: many exchanges with burma. 85 cases is not so much . they'll probably have to lockdown soon.

I think you may be confusing Rayong with Ranong.

Rayong is a very long way from Burma.

No it won't. Mr Teflon will blame someone way down the ladder.

Remember 'Tell me what I have done wrong'.

So that must mean there are LEGAL casinos in Rayong, then???

Ooooppppssss...

“I have raised the issue of gambling dens in Rayong for discussion in Parliament meetings many times, so I believe the PM and related ministries must be aware of the problem,” he said. “After the crackdown on a large gambling den in the Map Ta Phut area in June, how come there are still gambling dens in the province, making Rayong the second biggest hotspot after Samut Sakhon in the new wave of Covid-19?”

A lockdown as soon as it happened would of been more sensible as it would of given everybody  a chance for symptoms to show and trace and then people could of enjoyed the New Year celebrations.

Instead everybody is scared and all celebrations are cancelled causing millions of baht in losses

Yes Rayong is another province in the botom of the golf and have a lot of fishermen for sea food ...probably a lot of burmese employees but never heard about gambling dens there.

Just seen on the BP that the numpty police chief has been moved to an inactive post ????????????

Seems to be somewhat of an update on the "lockdown" situation for Mueang district as of today:

"Rayong province has announced prevention measures after reports of 36 COVID-19-infected patients in the province. The Governor has announced that the province is becoming a Highly Controlled area. Child care centers, elderly care centers, educational institutions, Thai traditional massage shops, massage parlors, game arcades, beauty clinics, fitness centers, museums, pubs and bars, public libraries, child playgrounds, community malls, and public swimming pools in Mueang district have been ordered to be closed from 28 December 2020 until further notice. (28/12/2020)"
